Yo-kai Watch Demo Impressions Thread (NA)

The game's super cute, and looks great in 3D, but I'm a little confused by the battle system. So Soultimate is basically a limit break. Otherwise your party attacks automatically, and Purify is healing I guess? WTF is "target"?

Aside what's listed above, is there anything else to battle system? Do all the Yo-kai have elements? (some used water during their soultimates, but I saw nothing in the demo touching on elements, strengths and weaknesses at all.) Anything like nature, EV's and IVs?

The demo really doesn't go in depth about most of the mechanics in the game. There are elements and yokai have weaknesses to them. Soultimates are pretty much limit breaks but you'll use them a lot and they are meant to. Purifying is to get rid of status effects and you should do them since you'll be rewarded extra EXP when the battle ends. Targeting pins a enemy so your yokai can focus their attacks on that enemy or certain parts of a boss's body.

game is pretty charming so far, but i feel that about most level 5 games

yeah im not a fan of the battles, I don't like using the stylus

wow that was really short lol

For those like the above who weren't a fan of the stylus based "mini-games" in battles, here's some awesome news -

All minigames can be done with just the circle pad and sometimes A.

The stylus is generally quicker and easier, but it's a lot easier to press X with the buttons so I prefer the buttons for regular battles that will end in seconds anyways and the buttons are good enough most of the time.

Thought this was important to share since this could sway some people to give the game a shot! I'm way too into this franchise thus far hahah.

Well, I'm torn. Game is charming and looks / runs great (puts Pokémon to shame, lol), but the battle system is basically just random mini games. You kind of only decide if you're healing or attacking.

Dunno how 1 works. In 2, though, which actually has online multiplayer (no such thing in 1 unfortunately):

IVs are basically in. Details are different but the basic concept is there. In this game though you basically just do a few resets/recruit a few of the same Yo-Kai as needed to make sure your "IVs" aren't some stupid shit where an irrelevant stat is really high and the Yo-Kai's most important stat(s) is really low.

Yo-Kai have a nature but it's more like EVs. Every time a Yo-Kai gains exp. it gets hidden points towards a stat(s) and which stat(s) depends on its nature. Which you can change with buyable books BTW.

There's also Training. There are four different options. IIRC it's +Attack -Defense, +Defense -Speed, +Spirit or whatever the fuck it is -Speed, and +Speed -Defense. They are all +5 in one stat with -2 in the other. You can do Training up to 5 times per a Yo-Kai and can reset it at will.

That's good to hear, but yeah, the battle system feels like it mostly plays itself. Does each YoKai at least get to learn different Soultimates as they grown stronger? Do they evolve/grow into other forms?

Edit- Also, the anime cut-scene intro looked SO good in 3D. Really kinda drives home how much better Pokemon can be in presentation if Gamefreak actually tried in that department.

They have one Soultimate that levels up. They can evolve though.

Normal battles will eventually go by really quickly, though. You'll basically just press X, pin enemies so they quickly die one-by-one, and it'll generally be over in a handful of seconds. However, in tougher battles, like some bosses and other human players (again, why no online in the first game Level 5...) there is a good amount of micromanaging going on and the battle system is much more engaging as a result.

EDIT: Oh, just in case someone here wasn't aware, you press X to make the battle go at double speed.

Grinding isn't really an issue either since there's items that give your yokai EXP. The amount varies depending on the items ranging from 10 EXP to 10000 or more EXP. One of the higher ones guarantees several level ups in one go.

I just watched the trailer and it looks cool. From the makers of Fantasy Life too so I'm pretty interested!

No demo in UK yet :(

I tried the game during a post E3 live event, and:

- It looks and runs greatly
- It has the classic L5 attention for the production values
- It is really charming, especially due to the Japanese "folklore" involved, imho
- the BS is not as simple as it should be to be mastered during a demo, imho
- It is more manage-oriented than "combat-oriented" as BS, so you are not directly in charge of the "actual" fights, but you should put more attention to the party assempling part (positioning, general behaviours and so on)

I really liked it, I hope it will not be too late in EU

Was surprised that I actually enjoyed it. Game looks great, charming as hell, great detail in the world(in your friends home, you can see items hanging in a closet), environments look gorgeous, the Yo Kai designs are cute and weird. Hoping the narrative is a bit more interesting than a Pokemon game.

I sorta wished that during localization they had retained the Japanese bits. I mean, the stores and city look like a small Tokyo suburb. I hated that they did the same thing with Inazuma.

Well, I was excited for this initially, but I'm not feeling that battle system at all. Other than that, it's definitely charming as most folks have said.

Played the demo last night. I like the style and presentation, but not really feeling the battle system. I was going to try defeating all the enemies in the demo, but I got bored and annoyed by the mini-games. Hopefully the full game offers more depth and variety. I think I'll be entertained for awhile, but I don't know I'll have enough patience to catch 'em all.

I liked everything about the game but the battle system when I tried it at NYCC. It just seems too...gimmicky but hell, Level 5 and Capcom are wizards when it comes to making good loooking 3DS games. If only Pokemon looked half as good.

Just found this secret boss in the demo on my second playthrough

latest

he was kinda tough, but I managed to beat him. it's funny because the last 2 remaining were the healing yokais yet they are the ones to finish him :P

Where??? I wanna fight him. Dunno if I feel like doing the demo again though, I had leveled everyone to level 13 but don't feel like doing it again. Maybe i'll just wait to the full game.

also do yokai always start battles with full limit gauges in the full game? kinda broken.

Were you able to use him?

Sadly no.

He is located at the top of the map(probably top right).

don't know about your second question.

No, the gauges only stay full at the start of every battle in the demo. In the full game they refill with items or over time.

I managed to beat Reuknight really quickly the second time I encountered him and used a strategy o_O. Had 4 out of 6 Yokai left surprisingly. Basically saved Noko's healing ability until the right time. It's too bad the demo doesn't let you look at what the abilities of the Youkai are at all imo T_T.

Battle system seems fairly boring except from the boss battle. Very charming environment and everything though.

My impressions:

-Very nice graphics and presentation
-Some good monster designs
-Otherwise seems rather shallow
-Battle minigames seem like they would get tiresome

Overall OK.

I don't really ever play demos so I won't end up playing this. Straight talk, will it be worth buying this game if I enjoy Pokemon?

Played this yesterday. I was expecting to enjoy it, as a big Pokemon / RPG-lite fan, and I did! It's pretty charming. Totally grabbing it once it comes out. How long is the full game supposed to be?

Also, a bit unrelated, but one thing I couldn't stop thinking about is how much the artstyle reminds me of the Megaman Battle Network games. I made my brother play it last night and he said the same thing as soon as the demo started. What I'd give for a new MMBN...

The demo sold me on this franchise.

I love the feel of the game and how different they made the battle system from Pokemon but at the same time how they emphasize synergy between the different Yo-kai and ask from constant input from the player.

Officialy percheD for this.

EDIT: The anime is hilarious too

There doesn't seem to be a site that shows all the yo-kai avaliable in the first game, there is no database available? I don't even see any guides really.

People saying that it's not like Pokemon is actually a plus for me - I'm so tired of the same thing after such a long time. They're still good games, I'm just worn out at this point.

I'm pretty broke right now, so I'm going to have to decide between this and Halo 5. Guess I'll just wait for the review and GAF impressions on the full game.

Huh, looks like the show will have monsters not in the actual first game, will be weird to see them in the show and find out they are missing in the game. Might have been a good idea to make some kind of hybrid version for the west.

I enjoyed the demo very much. Level 5 continues to stun with great production values and details that it reminded a lot of Inazuma Eleven. Combat is fast and smooth although it's hard keeping track of what's going on the top screen when half of the time my eye was glued on the bottom screen. It would have been nice to be able to access the menus to get a better sense of the game's UI and see what kind of abilities each Yo-Kai has.

The boss battle was tough that I was left with two Yokai standing by the end of it but in a good way. There seems to be a lot to do so outside of battling so I'm looking forward to impressions on it. Definitely will check out the game during a sale in the future although it's a bummer that it doesn't have online multiplayer.

YW1 is just one version. The show just previews new Yokai that'll appear in the later games like YW2 on so on. Pokemon did and still does this too.

So I just suddenly became super excited about this game. I don't know how or why it hit me, but I can't wait to play it. I am downloading the demo right now!
