Yooka Laylee has gone gold

I don't think that matters, point is there is a physical for other consoles, they have a release date and can make a proper choice.

Nintendo fans only know a digital Switch version is coming someday. No physical and no day one isn't very fair.
I don't even know what to say in this case. Do you want a brand new indie company that is about to release their first game to sit on finished copies while they finalize everything on the switch version they only recently started work on?

They should say more, if Switch is gonna be 6 months later or something, they should be up front and say that.

You're framing it like this was done with malicious intent to slight Nintendo fans.

It doesnt matter if it was malicious or not. They kickstarted this thing and sold copies for the WiiU. To discard that version and then make people chose another console (that they might not have) is fucked up and they shouldnt be so easily let off the hook for that.

They offered a full refund or a switch of platform, what more can they do?

isn't there a refund option too? just refund the game and see what happens

I didn't kickstart this so I can't speak on that but I'm just glad they're bringing it to Switch at all

The game was planned for Wii U before it was even decided it was coming to Xbox and Playstation, so yes, they did con Nintendo fans into funding this game coming to Xbox/PS first.

They've conned no one since anyone who wanted the WiiU version can request a refund.

And what better communication can they offer beyond "um hey so we've ceased development on the WiiU port because it would be a money sink for obvious reasons. Request a copy on alternate hardware or get a full refund k thanx."

Or did they forget to consult their crystal ball on the status of the WiiU/Switch a year ago?

For everyone complaining about the Wii U situation still, change your pledge to PS4 when the survey opens and sell your code on the GAF BUy Sell Trade thread for $5 less than the official price. You'll make money on your Kickstarter pledge and be able to buy the Switch version eventually if you so desire.

Or just take the refund they offer. Seriously, they are going above and beyond what they need to do, especially since Kickstarter is not a pre order platform.

I've asked for some clarification over what 'upgrade' options are available for those at the boxed physical PC tier, as it's not covered by what they've announced today. We should at least be getting both a PC and console copy of the game, but no word on the ability get a physical console copy.

Edit: just reading back over their replies on Twitter this evening, there's this: https://twitter.com/PlaytonicGames/status/826139461281050624

@PlaytonicGames If you backed the physical PC edition, can you change that to a physical console edition?

‏@PlaytonicGames
@joggingkangaroo You can change your additional digital code. PC physical is KS exclusive and unfortunately already manufactured

Of course, we could just sell the code and buy a physical copy - it'd probably actually work out cheaper than changing via Kickstarter!

Thanks for the information. I definitely want to have my additional code be for PS4. I guess we just choose that in the survey?

Better communication on the Switch would be an explanation on their current timeline for delivery and some sort of comment on the possibility of a physical Switch down the line.

Surely they have an idea how long it will take to get the digital Switch version out.

They might have an idea, but you can't announce an "idea" of release plans. If nothing is set in stone yet, it will only hurt them to announce something that isn't guaranteed. If discussions on distribution on the Switch version are still in flux, what sense does it make on jumping the gun regarding information?

Is the Kickstarter PS4 version exclusive to the campaign, or is it the same as retail? I backed for digital PC because there was no physical console at the time, but would happily change to console physical if it had a cover unique to that version.

This is going to be some good clean fun, can't wait.

Might be too much to ask but I'm hoping for some nuts and bolts in here....just a tiny bit.

If you feel unsatisfied, you should request the refund and decline to fund their next Kickstarter.

Almost certainly identical to the retail release.

To throw Nintendo fans a bone and keep them actually appraised of the situation? They have given zero info since they said it isn't coming to Wii U.

I won't get a refund, I'll probably just choose the Switch digital in the end and have to wait. Or I suppose PS4, then wait it out for the Switch physical which will be happening at some point, just probably not in connection with the KS..

If they don't have any information to give, you want them to what, lie instead?

They would know their current projection and state of their early plans, thats all they need to detail.

Even if its bad news that its at least 6 months or more out, people could then choose to decide to wait or change to a day one platform.

I don't know what the problem is with giving more context or info on things related to the Nintendo version.

Even going into more detail about why the Wii U game couldn't happen would have been something.

In many cases, game companies get crucified for releasing early info and having to revise that after the fact. Hell, look at this kickstarter. You backed it, and they had to change plans in the middle and updated you on that fact and you are killing them for it. is it any surprise, that in the absence of concrete info, they are declining to comment? Just the fact that they offer a refund is 1000% better than most kickstarters. I dont understand why if someone was so upset they wouldn't just cancel? You can always buy the digital or physical copy later. It is not like canceling until you have more info will keep you from getting the game.

That is untrue.

The moment we found about it, it was always expected/announced to release for ps4/xbone/wii u/ PC. It's fine to be angry, don't make lies up though.
The fact Playtonic is developing first hand on Wii U and PC at first and got a separate porting team for PS4/XB1 the Wii U likely was the first main console they wanted to develop this for. Imo they still should've sold this on Wii U they can do digital only if they want

can't wait. March to April is BotW, Mass Effect Andromeda and then this.
I backed on KS and went with a PS4 version but I would probably prefer switch if there's not going to be a significant delay. That and Unity's poor performance record on some games on console.

Pretty much this. I'm going for the Switch version and will wait until it releases sense I'll be playing Zelda and Bomberman well into May.

I hope this turns out legit.

My only worry is for a game of the scope and scale in 3d that I think we'd all like 21 months is an awfully fast turn around.

I just hope it isn't great but content lite where what's there is awesome there just isn't enough of it.

Most probably this will be the first big videogame I'll play with my little lady (well... not considering Disney infinity - Frozen Edition and Goat Simulator...).

Let's see...

A bit of a tangent question, but why do I see so much push for a physical release of this? I can understand on a fully home console why people may want that, but on the switch which also features mobility? Do people really want to carry around multiple little cartridges vs just pulling it up digitally?

Or is it just a general aversion to digital copies vs physical?

The length of the game being acceptable is probably going to depend on how many "pagies" you collect. There are only five worlds in total (barring any surprises) and the pagies not only unlock new ones but also expand those you already have access to, so while Playtonic has said the worlds will be larger than those in Kazooie, whether or not that's the case by default is a giant question mark.

They cut the Wii U version, and I suspect wanted to do it in house, because it would be way harder to get it up to parity with pc/xbone/ps4. They couldn't do it, that's almost guarenteed to be why it was cut. It had nothing to do with being digital/physical.

I hope this turns out legit.

Banjo Kazooie only took ~15/16 months according to the wiki page. Now while it's obviously a different ball game entirely in 2017 than it was in 1997, I believe they could have done it.

Given that the storage space on the Switch is tiny, personally I'll be getting everything I possibly can physically (when I eventually take the plunge).

I ended up upgrading my Steam copy to a PS4 digital copy a little while back as I didn't have a PS4 when I backed the project and it'll probably run better on the PS4 than my years old laptop. Hopefully the port is decent.

oh stop it. Everyone with eyes saw that the Wii U was dying and they decided to kickstart a Wii U exclusive game. They get so much money that they extend it to PC/PS/XB/, wait until the last possible minute to cancel the Wii U version, and shaft Nintendo fans out of a physical copy, as there is no option to upgrade to a physical switch cart. It's a shitty situation. You can defend them all you want but what they did was wrong.

I can own a physical copy.

Easy enough. I can just rip the game and have all the benefits of OWNing with none of the drawbacks of little cards of plastic to get lost. My RetroPie showed me a few years ago that I really dont need all the plastic. And as long as I buy all my games and not share them I am comfortable with this process. Anyway, apologies....didnt mean to derail.

That makes sense. My thinking was the expandable storage is so cheap as to be meaningless cost increase. And if their flagship game, Zelda, is only 13GB, I bet most games are MUCH smaller.

What part of "the cancellation was due to technical issues" is so hard for people to believe? It's not like Playtonic didn't know Wii U would be an EOL platform by the time the game was released; FFS, NX was announced before the Kickstarter even launched.

It was never Wii U exclusive, the original goal was PC/Mac/Linux. Console was a joint platform of Wii U/PS4/XOne at same stretch.

You are completely wrong. It was a pc/mac/linux game with console versions planned that had a day 1 console stretch goal

The original kickstarter also said this:
If funded, Yooka-Laylee will be released for Windows, Mac, Linux, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U. However, the exact release timing and scope of each version will be determined by the success of this Kickstarter campaign and specifically, our stretch goals.

They never made any other Wii U specific promises in the original kickstarter campaign.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/playtonic/yooka-laylee-a-3d-platformer-rare-vival

The info about doing the WII U and PC version inhouse while the other versions were handled by a different developer is something they only revealed when they announced Team17 was the publisher, in 2016, a year after the kickstarter campaign was launched.

They baited Nintendo fans into thinking it would be exclusive. Wii U version was handled in house while they outsourced PS4 and Xbox. They knew exactly what they were doing.

At no point was that ever the case. Look at the Kickstarter. The goals were well defined in advance.

I'm not framing it, just calling it like it is. That's what ended up happening. It was obviously not intentional but it was poorly executed and communicated.

They are offering refunds or a free change to a different console's digital code. The console physical copies werent part of the original kickstarter rewards which I believe is why they require an upcharge. How is this poorly executed?

I dont understand why you're so desperate to be upset about this to the extent of making up facts.

Yes. That is the campaign they made after baiting Nintendo fans with their MingyJongo twitter account, which is now deleted. Keep trying to spin it though.

What do you expect Playtonic to say if they genuinely don't know the length/roadmap right now?

If they came out and said "Well we don't know but it might take around 4 months" and then in a month they said "Finalised now it's coming in September" there'd be outcry saying they "lied" again.

Anyway my one and only concern right now is that in the toybox and videos I've seen the controls/movement/camera have always seemed a bit stiff and fast. I'm hoping it's smoothed out a little for the final product.

Can you find any reference to the old MingyJongo posts that were baiting Nintendo fans? I don't remember them being particularly baity.

Either way, the campaign on kickstarter says what it says. It's right there on the page where you gave them money.

As far as I remember Mingy Jongo was a different project that was halted in 2014 and later replaced by Yooka Laylee. That project might have been a wii u exclusive (don't remember the details).
It might be that Yooka Laylee is the same project in a reworked version, but that was never confirmed.
