Yoshi Touch N Go - Gamespot review

Why didn't you just jump?

You know you can clear all of the clouds by blowing in the mic, right?

I'm just curious as to whether any DS game that uses the DS' unique features in an innovative way will be anything more than novelty.

I think it's very possible for a DS game to makes unique use of the DS' capabilities and be more than novelty. The trick is tying that "unique use" into the gameplay in such a way that it is integral and then providing enough challenge/variation upon that concept to keep players coming back for more.

I'd say that Zoo Keeper represents a fine example of this, but I don't know if that could be considered innovative. Keep an eye on Kirby DS, as in many ways it seems like a faster paced Yoshi DS, complete with more stages.

Blowing was useless and same for jumping. Yoshi just froze. It was very odd.

I'm also really looking forward to Kirby DS.

I tried to beat my Marathon score again last night and couldn't get past around the 4500 point. Another problem is the damn stylus. The top has that hook in it that annoys the hell out of my hand. I hope the Pacman stylus comes out in the US version or else I'll have to import. Its very, very annoying. I also must announce that since playing this game, there's a lot of small scratches on my DS. I'm not too bothered as if it becomes too unplayable (probably not for a while), I'm going to get a black DS.

Get some screen protectors, man. I barely touched Wario before getting something to at least protect the touch screen.

This is not how you review games. You review games based on how good the game is, that's it. If the reviewer feels the game is not good, or not good enough to warrant a 50 dollar purchase... that's what the reviewer should say. There's no qualifiers for market demographics.

which is why we shouldnt listen to reviewers! they arent offering any sort of critique! what they are offering is just a consumer report hiding behind the guise of "GAME REVIEWS!"

Good to see that people are enjoying it for what it is. I'm a huge fan of the old arcade games who's main goal was to better your high-score. Spent hours on scramble and timepilot when I was young just to see if I could do that little bit better.

Have had Yoshi for a while now and I'm still playing it daily. Raked up a few good scores as well so it's something for you guys to take a crack at.

Score Attack: 702 (195 Baby Mario)
Endless/Marathon: 12,845m

Endless really strats throwing the kitchen sink at you after 10,000. Frantic is putting it mildly.

I'd love to see a video of some of the most skilled /experienced players playing this. I can see what I'm supposed to be doing but it gets so frantic that I miss a lotta points. I likey a lot. My kinda game as of late. Very pick up and play. No strings attached.

Slam-Bam-Thank you-Yoshi. I refer to it as Yoshi Fondle and Bait for whatever reason. I'm sick I know.

Yeah, Best Buy I noticed were selling screen protectors for $5. I may pick some up tomorrow after the gym. They are very small and not noticeable until you hit it at a certain angle of light. Touch and Go is pretty manic so it can be tough on the touch screen.

Why all the hate?

Like I said earlier, people are just pissed that there's not 200 things to collect in the game. Mario 64 was a great game but it set back platformers for good. In hindsight, I'd rather 2.5D platformers like Crash Bandicoot be the dominant platformer series.

Its a great game but only for people who want to get that extra 10 yards or 5 points. It will lose interest with me as well but the replayability of this game is pretty damn high.

Is there a maximum score for baby Mario in score attack. Perhaps 200?

The most I've managed to get in the Baby Mario Section is about 125! I still havent mastered the art of chucking bubbles, I think, and my combo getting skill leaves much to be desired.

I'd guess my average is around 75.

I'd definitely say 200 is possible on the Baby Mario stage, in fact on my 195 run I missed a red coin. The best advice I can give is to keep your coin run going. You get bonus points depending on how many coins you collect in a row, you can't have a few seconds of a gap though.

To keep a run going, bubble an ememy or coin and hold it for when there's a break in coins. Don't throw it at Mario though, just leave it go gently and let it float up to him. Often throwing it results in Mario being propelled upwards, this can cost you about a second and normally results in killing your run.

The biggest run I've gotten is 40 coins, which I think gave me a huge +18 bonus, very handy. Also if you get over 160 you end up with a Black Yoshi(50 eggs), and for every point over that you earn an extra egg, so it's possible to end up with well over 80 eggs.

I finally got the black yoshi. I am doing fine until the bats come and you have to micro getting the top coins, doubling up the bats, and making sure you are walking on clouds. Still haven't memorized when those fast things come out. There is no way I can hit those anyways.

I broke 5000 today for the first time & promptly died. :lol

i did that same thing after i hit 4000 last night. i hit 4000 and got the invisablity star then didn't notice that it had run out...and fell down some small hole. i mean c'mon

Ok, I really don't want to read the whole thread, so can people post some impressions? This game looks great, but mediocre reviews scare me.

Although I think they could've done more like having some boss fights or something (i'm a big boss fan) what they've done with it already is very fun. I'd knock it for having less substance than I'd like, but I'd praise it for being good fun.

Time Attack mode has a boss!

Yoshi > Wario Ware Touched

Before you go batshit, let me explain myself.

Aside from it's replayability problems, Wario Ware's use of the touch screen really hammers home the "gimmick" aspect of it as the entire game is designed around the different things you can do with the screen and stylus.

On the other hand, Yoshi uses the touch screen and microphone in an interesting way to control what would otherwise be a traditional platformer. With that, I'm having a TON more fun playing through Yoshi over and over than with Wario Touched.

Hmm. I'm headed out to pick up Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat, but I'm torn on Yoshi. My DS really is hungry for some new software, but PSP is also coming up. We'll see I guess ...

ED was seriously overrated. SK has not done a good game since the original Blood Omen. Compared to Blood Omen, ED was real crap.
