I feel the following VSauce video is perfect for this conversation:
Is Anything Real?

Great watch even if you're completely sober.

Actually, the present is the illusion, not the past.
We are experiencing the past.
It takes a microscopic second before the light from an object/event hits your eyes.
Then it takes another microscopic second before your brain registers what your eyes see.
That's when you're conscious of what have happened in the immediate past.
Hence, we're only conscious of the past, the present have already happened, so we are living in the future.

Also, shorter people live in a timeslice that is 'sooner' than taller people. In fact, we all experience time differently from each other.

Some people talk about the improbability of alien life forms in the universe, but 65 million years ago

This roamed the earth.

And this was a thing:

Alien creatures owned earth before we did.

I can't believe this took 53 posts.

I still can't get used to the feathers...

Actualy from a scientific point of view the present is only a theoritical constant past and future are hard constant because at the moment the present exist it become past as for the future and for the events you are describing, there are allways situations on which our input change the end goal or sometimes the resultes change . We are not dead but our influence on the future is a bit lower than what we think .

I always figured if you tossed a coin and it lands heads, then somehow went back in time 100 times to witness it (but not interfere) it would land heads all 100 times.

So in that moment it was always going to land heads, free choice is a lie.

Still look when I cross the road tho

Cognitively it's very difficult for humans to think about the future, or rather feel it. You can project yourself, but in the end if you think about future you, the brain interprets it as another person completely. Tomorrow I will work out, next year I will earn money etc. but in the end when you get there, you don't. That's one of the reasons addiction is so difficult. You know it's bad and it will fuck you up in the end, you think you will fix it in the future, but then you don't when the future becomes present. So if you say you are already dead, the dead future you is not actually you in a way, doesn't feel like it at least.

You can take this further by saying you already died many times. You are not the same person as you were when you were 10, right? You have a stream of consciousness and your brain tells you a continuous narrative, but look back at posts you wrote 5 years ago. Are you still that person? You experience many versions of yourself throughout life, when you physically die in the end, you simply don't get to experience the next version of you.

Sounds like freshman philosophy up in this thread. Yeah, external world skepticsim is a thing. No, we haven't been able to beat it yet. Go read Thomas Reid or something if you want earthly reassurance.

Today is the shadow of tomorrow
Today is the present future of yesterday
Yesterday is the shadow of today
The darkness of the past is yesterday
And the light of the past is yesterday
The days of yesterday are all numbered in sum
In the world once
Because once upon a time there was a yesterday
Yesterday belongs to the dead
Because the dead belongs to the past
The past is yesterday
Today is the preview of tomorrow but for me
Only for my better and happier point of view
My point of view is the thought of a better or try
Reality is today of eternity
The eternity of yesterday is dead
Yesterday is as one
The eternity of one is the eternity of the past
The past is once upon a time
Once upon a time is past
The past is yesterday today
The past is yesterday today
While we're searchin for tomorrow

The light of the past is the light which was
The wisdom of the past is the light of the past
The light of the future is the light which is to be
The wisdom of the future is the light of the future see
Yesterday belongs to the dead
Tomorrow belongs to the living
The past is certified as a finished product
Anything which has ended is finished
That which is perfect is finished
The perfect man is no exception to the rule
The perfect man of the past is made according to the rule of the past
The rule of the past is a law of injustice and hypocrisy
The revelation of the meaning of the law is revealed through the law itself
The wisdom of the past is the light of the past
The light which is to be the wisdom of the future
The light of the future casts the shadows of tomorrow

I'm still confused why dimensional time is a thing. Of course we use it on graphs but in the physical universe? It's massively different from the other dimensions so why is it counted like one of them? Things occupy one location on all other dimensions but extrude as a continuous line along time. Things can occupy a position in one dimension at different points in time but not the same position in time at different points in space? What's the conversion rate between seconds and meters?

Except that our concepts of past aren't based on a microscopic scale. I don't think of something that I experienced milliseconds ago as the past, nor do I think of something that will happen in a millisecond as my future.

It's not microscopic but micro-time. Time cones spread at light speed so things happening 100 meters away are not in the same moment as what's happening next to you but the time difference is many, many orders of magnitude smaller than what you can perceive. It's only when watching other planets or stars or playing videogames over the internet that this comes into play.

Op read Decartes. He is a famous philosopher who figured this question out over a 1000 years ago. TLDR the phrase "I think therefore I am." Means that you aren't dreaming or in some perpetual state because you are thinking. In dreams you can't think about your next move.

There are several valid criticisms of that phrase, Descartes didn't simply "figure it out".

Also, does it seem past and future is only an illusion as we are constantly living in the present and present only...actually there is only the present with or without us living to precieve it.

When you realize the past and the future are only illusions.

Go read some Samuel Beckett OP, specifically Waiting for Godot.

Sam Beckett? Are you saying that by quantum leaping we can impact our destinies and change the course of time as it was set back at the origin of our universe? Does Ziggy still exist? Did he ever exist?

You know what's even more scary, dude? Our concept of "ego" and "individuality". You and me, we are nothing but two seperate hard drives holding different information with a pretty basic OS (living=1, dying=0). Without memory there's no "me", "you", "we" or whatever. Don't believe me? Try not looking into a mirror for the next five years and you'll see how your self-perception changes drastically.

One thing about death that I really hope is true is the DMT release. Tripping so hard that in the last few seconds of life you are able to be transported away and live countless other existences.Time would almost seem to stop and those seconds, or minutes would stretch out to years, decades and even centuries. Not a bad way to go out tbh, but we don't know till we get there sadly.

like that movie with Ryan Gosling? i think its called stay

Interestingly, in our current best theory of space and time, General Relativity, time isn't something that flows, but just a parameter like space coordinates. In other words, the universe is like a big loaf where stuff early in time exists at one end of the loaf, and stuff in the far future exists at the other, all at once.

This can't be the whole story because general relativity breaks down when quantum effects are important, and quantum mechanics treats time differently. There has to be another theory that explains both! Still cool to think about though

Yeah, but that's exactly the point where science may hit a brick wall. We are determined by "time" - every action, thought, chemical reaction in our body. Time is a set of parameters which gives us the concept of cause and consequence. The human mind is able to play around with any variables and still follows the rules of the basic cause and consequence concept. But: how do you think the unthinkable? What if our design by nature/god will limit us in the end? Example: "the moment before big bang". This sentence may not sound intriguing at first, as it works with common human logic (going back to the first cause), but in fact there was no "moment" before and shortly after the big bang as there was no time, no cause and consequence.

Life is but a dream. You awake in a new state, struggle to understand and explain your surroundings, and just like that the dream is over and you return from whence the dream came. You are information that will exist within a single, miniscule point in the spacetime of this universe until it ceases to exist. From your temporal point of view however, you will not only one day not exist, but you will basically never have existed.

But couldn't the sun just be a bigger fire casting shadows on a much bigger cave wall?

That's an interesting take. It can be interpreted in many different ways. Like the rich knowledgeable holding the truth while the poor stay in ignorance, that we rely our perception in our senses and we cannot see beyond them, etc.

My take on the cave is this:

The Shadows are the Future, which no one can predict accurately, yet you hear everyone having an opinion about how things should be, unfulfilled promises or lies from politicians,Media, etc. It can also be applied to artificial creations which the majority of people don't have the knowledge of how were created, yet we use them and take them for granted.

The shackles of the prisoners are the Present. Our invisible chains are our subconcious needs and desires which can never be fullfilled, thus making us slaves to them (we do whatever we do in order to serve them), Maslow's hierarchy of needs, etc..

The fire behind them is each individual's Past. The majority of people have done numerous mistakes or "sins" and are ashamed to "turn over their heads" or use self-critisism to take blame for those mistakes and thus repeating them over and over again. The "products" of those past mistakes are the shadows in front of them.
