You know, this election year really taught me something

One of my aunts still thinks that the popular vote elects the president and doesn't even know what an electoral college is. Good stuff.

This election didn't really provide me any new information as much as it boldly underlined many things I already knew or thought to be true.

Yeah same stuff OP. I feel like people should have to go through a class on US government and how it's structured/works before voting.

Taught me how many closet racists I knew. Taught me that people have just been waiting for the opportunity to say all the vile hatred on their minds.

Same here. This election brought out the worst in my family. I will always be disappointed in them.

It taught me "You know how people say you should have faith in humanity? You shouldn't. There are a lot more horrible assholes than you realize."

Politics doesn't matter to a lot of people.

I've become much less naive about race relations as a result of this election :/

Seriously. I was a glass half full guy when it came to race relations but this map below from 538 really showed me the degree to which white people don't get it. It's like the vast majority of the country seems to think that the only requirement to not be a racist is that you don't say the N-word in polite company.

TPOUS may not have a lot of power in the US with an opposing congress, but the president has huge power outside of the US and can move mountains.

Every election it becomes more and more adorable to see all the new young idealistic voters and the breathless uncritical parroting of rhetoric carefully crafted by consultants in suits somewhere in a meeting room in D.C.

I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on Earth.

lmao

One of the candidates for the highest office in the land thinks the other while in the senate could wave a magic wand and change any set of policies or laws in anyway they desired.

So yeah not much hope for the average American.

I think the real issue is that a candidate can safely get away with a strategy like that because a large enough percentage of the population doesn't immediately recognize why that charge is absurd.

Trump is certainly ignorant in many areas, but that sort of stuff is him recognizing the ignorance of the electorate and taking advantage.
