You'll "want to protect" the new Lara Croft

The very apex of "white knight". I don't want to protect her. I want to see her turn into a fucking bad ass who beats the shit out of people and explores tombs.

So basically, Lara was too strong before, and guys can't relate to a strong woman, so this new weak version is easier for guys to latch on to because they'll want to protect her instead of being intimidated.

I don't want to protect Lara I want her to explore ancient civilizations, architecture, tombs, climb shit, solve puzzles and ok I wouldn't oppose some shooting of people too.

The direction for this game actually reminds me of those revenge fantasy movies like Last House on the Left, I Spit on Your Grave and Thriller: A Cruel Picture.... where women are brutalized and eventually toughen up and destroy their aggressors.

I have no idea what feminism has to say about those... I'm sure there are those who would both champion and deride them.

I honestly have to wonder if ANY women are on the development team of this game, and if there are, what is their opinion of its direction.

This whole thing is dumb.

Retro Studios showed everyone how to faithfully reboot and modernize a franchise staring a female protagonist with their Metroid Prime trilogy. Meanwhile Crystal Dynamics was apparently too busy sniffing paint to learn from their success.

What I want to do is gag her.

Seriously Eidos, post an update saying you've replaced the voice you've recorded for the character and maybe I'll buy this. Gawd.

You know, if you want to make a character the player instinctively wants to protect you should probably make a kid. Or a puppy.

Not an adult woman.

I dunno. There's almost nothing "female" about the character of Samus in Metroid Prime. There's almost no character. I don't think that's a positive female character at all... just a hero avatar with a female body.

Sounds like pretty much what their thought process is.

It's like they watched one too many bad anime, found out what the term "Moe" means, and decided to apply it to Lara. >_>;

Yeah, Samus sure was helpless completely kicking the ass of everything on the Bottleship.

I find it funny that Samus kept her badassery while going through a midlife crisis and got so much hate but most people think torture porn Tomb Raider is the fresh direction the series needed.

As long as Adam let her kick ass, of course.

Can somebody who is a whiz with Photoshop please replace the "Tomb Raider" logo on the box art with a White Knight Chronicles III logo please?

Given the proper tone I think a game like I Spit on Your Grave would be awesome, but there's a certain level of detachment and tongue-in-cheek over-the-top tone you'd need to hit for something like that, whereas this game seems to be (trying to be) deadly damn serious.

That's part of why Samus in Prime was kinda refreshing. Characters don't need to broadcast their gender if the story doesn't call for it, which it didn't in Prime.

This is why atmosphere remains a forgotten, ignored art: too many too busy telling us to think/feel something via PR instead of making it happen via the game.

That's part of why Samus in Prime was appealing.

I guess not stating anything about personality at all is a good way to avoid accidental sexism :P

I don't think it needed that either... but that doesn't make it a good female character. It's not character at all.

After reading the women tropes thread this is pretty much a perfect example of a female character being created for men.

Who is this protection aspect aimed towards?

Males.

Hey, don't blame PR. That poor bastard is probably drinking himself into a coma right about now. Last thing you want your brand to bring to mind is creepers. Which is what this producer just did.

Again.

...the guy has some real clear and present issues with women.

Regardless of the script's minimalism, Samus is a female character.

Samus didn't really broadcast her gender in Other M, either. Her social awkwardness, PTSD, and midlife crisis are not female exclusive. Genders could have been totally mixed up and they could have told the exact same story. They just added some more emotion. Solid Snake had similar issues, his dialogue was just better written.

Yeah, Samus has never been a character at all. That's why Idon't mind Other M I don't find it horrible as it builds up from Fusion it was nice to have some backstory. I think people hated it because everyone had their own preconceived Samus.

Agreed. And likewise, If Adam had been a female character it would have been exactly the same, imo.

So it's official that Lara will barely have any growth as a character in this game...

I imagine this protection aspect will be difficult to implement if they created a strong character that can take care of herself.

Like he said, they are going to break her down and make her vulnerable so males can feel like they want to protect her from all the nasty baddies.

I've already said a lot regarding this game in the previous threads. This only reinforces what I've been saying all along. This isn't a game about Lara Croft overcoming challenges and proving she's a badass heroine. This is a game about making her suffer, and showing her broken.

Can't wait for the BUT WHAT ABOUT THE MENS crowd to derail this thread too. This is clearly the norm for every major character in an adventure game, clearly.

Oh what a load of bullshit. Her weakness and mother instinct were played up to eleven exclusively because she was a woman. The bad writing just made the bad worse.
