Your BEST N64 multiplayer experiences - the games, the tears, the salt

I remember my one friend and I had never played this game, and two of my other friends that owned the game invited us over to play. They thought they'd just cream us, but us newbies picked it up so fast that we won every single match. It was amazing.

If you picked the one faction that had only the large tanks, you could cream pretty much all the other people. It was completely nuts. The large tanks could just run over small tanks, and the cannon was just so awesome that a medium tank would get demolished in no time. Large tank vs large tank is just a firefight to the finish, but when you die you just get another large tank, meanwhile they have to go back to the tiny or medium tank. At which point you run them over, take their queen/woman and just drive back to your base.

My cousins and I used to play Goldeneye with just proximity mines and PP7's. (The PP7's were only for shooting proximity mines.) It was awesome.

Used to do this exact same thing with my brother and his friends. We only played on Facility though. It was ridiculously fun.

Conker was wonderful. Had a bunch of creative multiplayer game types.

So many after school memories. Great stuff.

Shame the Xbox multiplayer was so terrible.

Conker's Bad Fur Day had some surprisingly well done multiplayer modes. My friends and I spent many a day with it.

We also played games like Army Men: Sarge's Heroes in deathmatch. I remember it being fun at the time but the terrible framerate was bad even by the standards back then.

Every Friday in middle school my 2 friends and I would always choose who's house to go to play some N64. Each different house determined the games. One friend had smash and stadium. The other Mario party and no mercy. I had Mario kart and wcw/nwo revenge. Those were the best times.

I remember having a buttload of fun with two player Goemon's Great Adventure. I played as Ebisumaru and my friend played as Goemon and he kept falling into pits and missing jumps and I was like "Come on, man, I know fat guys more agile than you." Good times.

Well it still had Pans which were pretty similar. But you could hold an invisibility for that.

Or make a mad dash for the lift.

Also, All of the Mario Partys were a good time, even though my brother and I would usually end up on non-speaking terms due to the outcomes of some of the matches. Oh Boo, you star stealing SOB.

WWF no mercy
royal rumble
max # of wrestlers- 32 i think or 28 or 40
4 players

just awesome. played it with friends, cousins for a number of years and it was always comedy and amazement. the wonder of who your wrestler would be , lol when someone got Linda McMahon it was funny.
not much salt since everyone was just messing around

I've got plenty more about N64 games

Well it still had Pans which were pretty similar. But you could hold an invisibility for that.
What I meant was that every weapon can be avoided. For the pan, use invincibility, lift or throw a pan back.

Pans were nothing though, the real threat were the parachutes. You get hit just before a jump and say goodbye to everyone.

Goldeneye - Endless stories. Yelling at double teaming, being mad because no one could kill me. Constant yelling back and forth at you're a fucking camper in facility. No oddjob you fucking cheater. We played License to Kill and turbo mode with random weapon rule set. Complex was soft banned, and we usually played temple, library, facility, and archives the most. I played borris, and jaws mainly, but you gotta abuse crouch sliding with jaws because hes fucking big as hell.

Mario Party 1 - So much salt flows when grab bag shows up. It is a game changer. Someone pulled the plug on someone who was the 1 player on the flower collecting free coins. Kid fell to his death. Couldn't stop laughing while there was a big argument. I think we stopped playing because he went home.

WCW/NWO Revenge - Used to play the shit out of it. So I had this friend who had a little brother. He would always cry if he never got his way. This usually led us getting kicked out of his house because the mom was very protective of the little brother. Kid turned into a baby when shit went someone elses way.

So one day we are playing this game. We played it to death, and we all know the mechanics, and the ins and out of this game. So he wanted to play the next match while I was playing the older brother. So we usually do winner by TKO. This means really long matches that can only be ended by using the special move to knock your opponent out.

There's a lot of tag teaming going between me, the older brother against his little brother. He starts screeching, and we cant stop laughing. So I tag team up with him against the older brother to make it seem not as obvious we were against him.

So it's really at the end of the match, and the characters in the game are exhausted, and at this point its every man for him self. The little brother was constantly whining that he wanted to do his special. It usually requires a grab into the special, but he could never pull it off. The constant crying of him wanting to do the special was like a threat against us getting kicked out of the house, so I'm like "fine you can do your special". He does it, and my guy doesn't get TKOED (which is kind of rare). I get up and do my special, and the game decides that his character is out cold and the match was over. He starts flipping out like some crazy maniac. The noises that were coming out of his mouth was some of the funniest sounds I have ever heard a little kid make. We got kicked out the house because he went ape shit like never before.

I got more, but those are usually the three games with a lot of memories behind. The n64 was one of my favorite multiplayer systems ever. I loved that console so much.

The WcW franchise. I wonder whatever happened to Aki, but they should get the WWE license.
They Dont exist anymore. If you want an awesome wrestling game made with their engine you should play Def Jam Vendetta and Def Jam Fight for New York. Those were the last games Aki's wrestling engine was used in. They are both excellent.

1080 snowboarding was a definite highlight. It would be 40 degrees outside and we'd be inside in front of a 30cm TV trying to find the longest airs and the glitches when you made it outside the track.

NEVER FORGET

All of those 3D worlds were so amazing at the time. Literally a whole new dimension to explore after years of mostly being limited to 2D. The first timed I realized that half of Rainbow Road in Mario Kart 64 was quite a bit lower than the starting point, so I boosted and jumped off the side to see if I could reach it. And I could. And it blew my friend's mind because we were playing multiplayer. What a great feeling that was.

Gauntlet Legends. My friends and I played the hell out of this almost every weekend for the longest time. I wish they would release an upgraded version with online play. I know it's probably my nostalgia but newer games just don't seem to compare.

perfect dark (omg the hours played with my buddy -- we got to level 4-5? he eventually got 2 which is crazy time spent playing)

goldeneye (sorry more love for pd, it's just too good, still the watch laser in train was memorable)

conkers bad fur day (hoooooly shit i loved this game)

super mario ofc

mario kart ofc

BATTLE TANKS YES YES YES

rolling around towns blowing buildings down my favorite map was the square island map with just rows of buildings

maaaaaaaaaaaan nostalgia man

fucking agreed. they have gauntlet dark legends which was the sequel - i actually managed to get the gamecube copy (sealed) for $10 from amazon a while back.

this game was amazing and still is. i always played as the blue falconness because she was a jack of all trades character - didnt severely lack in any stat.

coupled with goldeneye, perfect dark, smash bros, mario kart, mario party, mario tennis, and even mario golf surprisingly...amazing fucking times.

Mario Party 1, Mario Party 3, Smash Bros. and days and nights and whole weeks of Perfect Dark multiplayer.
God dammit, Perfect Dark was the single best multiplayer experience in existence.
I never made it to Rank 1, though. Always been stuck at Rank 2. I still have my save file and profile on my Memory Pak.
I wish I wouldn't have to pay the XBL Gold fee do I could still play the XBLA version online.
So much fun.

Hiding and posting up proximity mines in Goldeneye, or down-smashing in Super Smash Bros. as Kirby.

I was a kid, I didn't know any better, just that those two systems of play worked or atleast were fun for me. Good times.

Edit : Also adding : Army Men : Sarge's Heroes I don't know why but damn fun.

That was my personnal golden age of gaming. Colege and best friends here.

Mario Kart 64 (battle mode)
I was unbeatable at this. I was playing some mind games when my friends was teaming up against me, manipulating them to turn them against each other.

Goldeneye
Not so much specific memories, but see later at Perfect Dark.
Oh, wait, yes I do, remote mines forever!

Smash Bros
Wasn't that fan of it, Melee was the real deal. Still very fun; We played it until Perfect Dark came out.

Perfect Dark
That is my greatest gamer memories, in multiplayer.
We played the shit of it. Infinite options to set up your game helped a lot.
We used to play in" Golden gun" mode, one bullet and you are done. Yeah, take that CoD gamers, with your couch 3 seconds are recover all your health! I remember sniping the foot of one of my friend in G5 Building, bad angle between some pillars. He didn't see that coming.
Remote mines sticking to the bodies is a must too. Guided missiles too.
So much things in fact!

I won't mention any of the games in posts above as they were mostly all loved in our multiplayer sessions however I haven't seen the below game mentioned and have some very fond memories, multiplayer was a blast.

My best buddy would laptop gun an entire area. How to solve that? SUPERDRAGON

or the first person rocket launcher that shit was cash chasing people around

oh, and best ai bots ever are the disarm drug bots

The N64 was probably the greatest multiplayer system of all time :)
But as far as I am concerned, nothing beats the amount of fun I had with Super Smash Bros.! :D

Aside from all those mentioned many times already, Vigilante 8 and Vigilante 8: 2nd Offense were tons of fun. Airplane Graveyard ruled.

The N64 is, without question, the greatest multiplayer console of all-time.

WcW vs nWo Revenge
WWF Wrestlemania 2000
WWF No Mercy
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Diddy Kong Racing
Mario Kart
Star Fox
Mortal Kombat Trilogy (load times > PSX extra characters)

edit: Shame on me for forgetting: Super Smash Bros, Mario Party and Mario Golf.

So many amazing multiplayer experiences from the n64. I'd go as far to say it is probably my favourite local multiplayer console ever.

Goldeneye - License to kill on complex, proximity mines in facility want else needs to be said.

Perfect Dark - Better than GoldenEye in almost every way except level design but luckily some of the 007 levels were in it. Loved the guns probably my favourite selection in a game. Laptop gun sentry is fucking amazing.

Mario Kart 64 - Damn what can I say, easily my favourite Mk followed closely by SMK and MK Wii. Best course design and most important of all the best battle mode in the series. They have never recaptured the genius of it and have in fact made it worse with each iteration, although MK7 was a step in the right direction. Still pissed that double deck has yet to be featured as a track in any of the new games so much better than block fort.

Smash Bros. - The game that started it all. I remember reading about in ONM and saving up like crazy to get it. It was an awesome game but felt like a prototype. Very little single player content but didn't stop me putting a hundred hours in multiplayer.

Pokemon Stadium - Played this with my friend everyday for months. He had a beastly Mewtoo that I just couldn't take down.

Conkers Bad Fur Day - Loved this with friends, so much hilarity decapitating Nazi bears and Squirrels with samurai swords. The tank mode was a fun little diversion as well.

Starfox 64 - Very limited but still didn't stop me and my friends playing it for hours on end. Unlocking the onfoot multiplayer was fun but the controls were terrible.

AKI Wrestling games - Played these to death with my brother. Mechanically my favourite wrestling games though I haven't played one in years. No Mercy was good but Wcw/nwo revenge was the better game.

Daddy Kong Racing - Played this all the time with my cousin. Not as good as MK but still extremely fun.

ISS 98 - My favourite football of that generation way better than any of the Fifas. I never played any of the Pro Evos on PS1 though. Have fond memories of playing this with my cousins.

Shamefully never played Mario Tennis or Golf until years later. Best version of both games, shame I never really got to try the multiplayer.

Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are of course the legends but I had tons of fun with Turok 2 or Rage Wars (or what wars was it?) and Mario Party (aaaargh my fists, aaaargh my controllers)

Diddy Kong Racing co-op was really fun too.

My older brother and I would spend hours playing goldeneye. We would have way too much fun using oddjob to shoot each other in the nuts then run away.

F-Zero X was our go to game after Goldeneye. We used to just use that random track cup to keep things fresh. Can't believe Miyamoto thinks nothing new can be done with the franchise.

Goldeneye, Smash Bros and Gauntlet Legend.

Three games I played so, so much. Especially Gauntlet, this shit was so good, each day after school we were four friends metting to play and grind the shit out of it.

Honorable mentions to Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racing.

All we (as kids) did was play the following games:

1. WCW/nWo World Tour/Revenge & WWF Wrestlemania 2000/No Mercy

&

2. Goldeneye & Perfect Dark

I've recently started rebuilding my Nintendo 64 collection so I can enjoy those classics again.

I can't even count how many thousands of hours we've spent during bondathons/darkathons let alone WCW/WWF games.

Waluigi was overpowered and you all know it.
No. My gbc custom character with the best items was op. He served for like 140. The main characters in the game aren't all that different besides boo. I got too good at it, and beat every one with birdo, and he's crappy.
