Your biggest disappointment of 2006?

The Wii and its games unveiling at E3 2006. I had already assumed that the system was going to be weak, but not that weak. Super Mario Galaxy was my only hope then, and it still is :-(

This forum is ****ing retarded, New Super Mario Bros is the best 2D platformer in years.

I can't even begin to imagine a world in which New SMB is a better game than Cave Story.

Unless Cave Story isn't a 2D platformer or something.

Splinter Cell Double Agent - X360
Sonic The Hedgehog - X360 (MASSIVE disappointment)
Zelda TP (not too much of a dis, I just don't like the wolf moments)
XBLA - MS needs to kill that 50MB limit.
Oblivion (not really but I expected it to be fun, I expected too much I guess)
No Monster Madness

Prey - We waited 8 years for this?
Next-gen pricing - UGH
next-gen graphics - This generation is just getting started and we've probably already seen graphics beyond what the systems are capable of (Crysis). Is this a new record?
I remember some stuff about half-life 2 & doom 3 when launched, both they said couldn't be done on a xbox. I know not near the highest setting, but with crysis how much is the computer going to cost compared to the 360?

Crappier than expected Wii Specs....and i wasn't expecting much at all, yet Nintendo managed to cheap out more than usual.

No Mario for Wii launch

Ps3 Launch - So god damn expensive, Crappy Games

Konami and Capcom had nothing for the winter 06. I really look forward to games from the holy trinity...Capcom, Nintendo, and Konami. Only nintendo had a great game, zelda.

Wii is a still a bitch to find.

No 360 pricedrop

The delay of the European release of the PS3, with still no clear indication when it will be released (march? may? september?)

No pilotwings SNES as a VC game

No online games for Wii

music in Zelda: TP.

I really like the OOT music and it fraking owns all the past zelda games. I kinda wish they would return to OOT roots. I hope in the future Nintendo would use orchestrated music in new zelda game w/ TP graphics or beyond.

Some more of mine:

-PSP Identity Crisis: Sony's marketing blows. They should stop marketing the "you can play movies and view pictures" shit and support the games. And that doesn't mean only support 1st party shit like GANGS OF LONDON crap. Amazing software like MGS Portable Ops, Daxter, Syphon Filter, etc all FAILED because Sony's lack of support for the gaming portion of the PSP.

-DS Lineup: I wasn't impressed with the DS lineup. Sure, it looked good from the outside, but once releases came, the games weren't that good. NSMB? Disappointing. FF3? Got boring. EBA & Phoenix Wright? Great games! The rest? Not worth buying.

-No faith in PC gaming: People say PC gaming is dead. Then why am I having more fun (in general) with PC games than with next-gen stuff? Company of Heroes, HL2: EP1, are FANTASTIC, but aren't given a chance by non-PC gamers. Sure, it's great with all the new "Games for Windows" jazz, but that isn't enough.

How many 2D platformers have there BEEN lately?

Well, since 2005:

Sonic Rush
NEW Super Mario Bros.
Kirby Squeak Squad
Drill Dozer
Yoshi's Island DS
Yoshi Touch & Go
Kirby Canvas Curse
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2
Super Princess Peach

Sony not creating an online system that forces Microsoft to stop charging me for something as trivial as Live. I don't care about the Playstation side, I just feel stupid paying to play anything online.

I can't comment on Wii's graphics, because nothing has come close to even matching the best on Gamecube, but the expected limit on graphics there was disappointing. I don't care about HD, even though I own a HDTV, I would have just liked a little more. That said, something like Smash Bros and Mario Galaxy looks perfect. It's just seeing stuff like Blue Dragon and thinking what could be done with some Nintendo franchises that bothers me.

I also found the lack of news on Tingle RPG coming to the West to be a huge disappointment.

Nein. In 2005 there was still hope that it would be a monster for SD resolutions. It wasn't until March of this year that it was confirmed to be a turbocharged GC.

Well, to the degree it is, we didn't know. I think they lowballed it a bit much. Regardless, most of the blame for poor graphics right now should be levelled at developers, Ubisoft especially.

Oh, if you had only listened to the lady who talks much and supposedly knows nothing. Yes, Perrin Kaplan. E3 of 05, she told the world it would be 2-3x as powerful as GameCube and what do you know! She was right!

QUOTE FOR MOTHER****ING TRUTH
Yes, for me its like Majoras Mask all over again... I am really, with very few exceptions, the only one, who love NSMB? I even like the soundtrack a lot, the main-theme is super-catchy.
I dont understand gamers anymore :((

Nah, not the only one at all. I loved the game. Had a total blast playing it.

I thought NSMB was good, but not great, until I started collecting all the coins.

Collecting the coins really showed off how much platforming you really had to do, and was what really tested your skills.

NSMB was a great game and just as good as any other 2d Mario. I think some people are getting hung up on their nostalgic memories of earlier Marios.

Ninety Nine Nights. If I had known that Tetsuya Mizuguchi and Q Entertainment had little to do with actual development, I probably would've passed on this one. The game felt mediocre.. but at the end credits, I saw Korean names under the development team and it all seemed clear. Shallow gameplay and a terribly cheesy/overly dramatic story that would compare to most of today's movies or tv shows that come out of S. Korea. Meh.. at least the music was decent.

I think it's an 8/10 game. It is a fun game that I played through twice and did not desire to touch again. I'd say I got maybe half of the coins.

My mom liked it though. Her first game was super Mario world on my SNES.

I actually kind of agree with this. I remember earlier in the year thinking to myself, what the **** is Nintendo doing releasing Phantom Hourglass, Elite Beat Agents, Yoshi's Island 2, Final Fantasy III, Children of Mana, Kirby Squeak Squad, Magical Starsign, etc., all at the end of the year and so close to each other! And yet almost all of those games turned out pretty average (aside from EBA), and Zelda was pushed to 2007. It had the names to back it up, yet they didn't quite deliver.

And yet I still feel the DS had the best year in terms of software (with 360 close on its heels), that's probably thanks to Castlevania though. :D

Also can anyone tell me how (or when?) I can add an avatar and create threads?

I don't really understand people being disappointed with FFIII unless they don't realize it's actually a NES RPG.

I went into it expecting something like FFI and was pleasantly surprised.

But as for another disappointment: Chalk one up for not enough people buying Elite Beat Agents.

(You can add avatars anytime. You have to have 100 posts under your belt before you create threads.)

I think it was very strange of Square-Enix to release it so close to FFXII and FFV. Either way, I'm still enjoying it a lot (FF3). I'm just so swamped with games right now.

I dunno, I wasn't at all disappointed with the DS's overall lineup. Specific games? Sure, there were some letdowns. But all (or almost all) of them? No way.

- Madden 2007: From numerous patches that had temporarily borked current gen games, to the underwhelming 360 version. Seriously, EA, what the f*ck.

- Carbon Nanotubes (or lack thereof): Dammit, KLee, I'm still waiting. I broke down and bought a 9UK plasma to hold me over.

- Next-gen Controller Costs: $40 for a Wii remote? $50 for an Xbox 360 or PS3 wireless controller? Excuse me, my wallet needs some anal lube.

Jeez . . . now I know why so many people have told me to get a DS when I whine about the lack of platformers on next-gen machines. I want 3D platformers, but I like 2D ones too.

Well considering I get Yoshi DS, Castlevania, and Elite Beat Agents tommorow....I can't say a whole lot yet but I think you overlooked a lot of titles.

Starfox was a great DS game I don't care what anyone says. A LONG single player game, single card multi and decent online made this game somewhat of a gem. NSMB wasn't the best thing ever, but it was a great and very finely tuned platformer. Also, if you want something play on DS pick up Wario Ware Twisted. The game just flat out rocks.

If anything the DS had the best year in '06.

DOAX2 was by far my biggest disappointment of the year. What a travesty of epic proportions this game is, and what a giant crab of massive damage-ton it has done to my faith in Team Ninja as a great development team. The game just flat out blows, and in a bad way. Hell, depending on what girl you start with you can't even play volleyball. The graphics are nice, to an extent, but I've seen better physics from an N64 game. Even the water slide mini game was ruined all to shit, the camera sucks ass, and the interaction with the girls is just terrible. I was, at least, expecting one mini game to be worthwhile, and if not I'd have the option to play volleyball when I wanted. Sadly, Itigaki has failed miserably with this game. The only upside is the CG intro is probably the hottest CG intro I've ever seen.

After this, Team Ninja should be renamed Team Cock Block.

Thanks for ruining the moment.

There's a new 2D Wario game coming out next March too, and most definitely a new NEW Super Mario Bros. somewhere down the line.

I'm pretty damn happy with it since my favorite genre is good ol' platforming.

the Wii in general (hardware), and specifically the lack of quality games for it. just a letdown in all regards for me, really.

Can I say PSP software sales but not PSP software?

Cause there are a ton of great games that like nobody is buying for whatever reason. Makes me sad. :( Playing Every Extend Extra now and I can only think about how badly this game bombed. :lol

Lack of a true spiritual successor to Red Dead Revolver.

Lack of third party support for the Wii. Yea I should be used to it by now, but you know what? Im not. Wii third party ****in sucks.

Lack of third party support (that Im interested in) for other systems.
Heres a list of my 360 (and soon to own) games:

Viva Pinata
GoW
R6
Lost Planet.

Lol guns...Theres only too much shooting I can take. Hopefully this changes..hopefully.

PS3.
****ing assholes felt like they needed to push a new format down my throat. I feel dirty having to rely on the Wii or 360 to get third party fixes. I really want to love you PS3, but your rediculous price point and wavering support makes me doubt your validity. The PS2 was such (and still is) a ****ing awesome machine. How you managed to screw the PS3 up so bad...ill never figure out. But hey, the race is still young..still got a long time to see who wins. Hopefully you pull your shit together.

Considering I own all of those games (except for obviously Zelda) I'd say no, I didn't. Aside from EBA every game mentioned is very much same old same old (be prepared for a major disappointment with YI2). None of them really try anything new, and even Kirby went back to the generic gameplay we've been playing for years, despite the amazing Cavas Curse. Don't get me wrong, Kirby is still good - just not great. And I feel that way with almost all of these games...

But a lot of good games, certainly comes up better then one or two great games, which is why the DS had a great year.

Actually, yes that was pretty worrying, but considering that many were 1) assuming Nintendo was lowballing like how they did with the GC, and 2) Perrin retracting her statement, there was still a tiny glimmer of hope.

Oblivion lacked nearly everything I loved about Morrowind.
Yakuza wasn't everything I was hyped into believing.
Pretty good year otherwise.
