Your dissapointment game of this year?

No game was outright disappointing.
But if I had to chose one maybe Yakuza 6.

The new engine is nice but the game took a big hit in the amount of content and it lost some features introduced in previous entries that I liked. I think they should have released Kiwami 2 first to get used to it and then gone on the make Yakuza 6. Since it was advertised as the grand finale of Kiryu's story that many fans have been following for over a decade I sort of expected them to go all out and deliver the best game in the franchise, but they didn't.
Game is still good though

Sounds like you could use a break from gaming friend.

Not really need to take a break from over hyped games honestly. Plus whats the point of this reply exactly? O i dont like rdr2 wah the game is trash face it im not the only one here who has these thoughts. I actually enjoyed tr 1 and rise, shadow has been meh same with rdr2. rdr was good as fuck the second fell flat. Good try at trying to pick a fight tho i give it a B.

Conversely, does someone do an "official" GAF GOTY vote each year? Only joined this year so I wouldn't know, would be interesting.

Out of those I bought?

Yea, definitely Monster Hunter World. Was my second go at trying the series. Bored me to tears and was the most grindy experience I've ever played and I play fucking Destiny.

So fuck Monster Hunter. Thought it was a turd and relatively unfun at all times.

I played Destiny 2 religiously but have hardly touched it since Forsaken came out. I'm kicking myself for buying the annual pass. Everyone seems to love it now but for me it ruined all enjoyment for me.

RDR2 the controls are terrible and the story's a steaming pile of shit. Shadow of the tomb raider is close tho really wanted to enjoy them both just cant get into either.

I always find it refreshing to hear some good honest opinion about a game everybody else seem to love. While I wouldn't go that far and say it's a bad game, I have to say that I'm also a little disappointed by the title. I expected the second coming of jesus and what I got was just a very good game with stellar graphics. Yeah the controls are not good, the story is moving at a snails pace and it has that typical rockstar story/feel to it, that does not exactly feel fresh to me anymore. It's unique and I would rank it in the top 3 or top 5 games of this year, but from a gameplay perspective, I think rockstar could and should to better.

I hate that I agree with most of this, but I do. I genuinely like the individual characters, but their individual stories are little more than 4 progressive sidequests with bosses at the end of them. I disagree with the quoted post about the systems, I love almost all of them, but they can't carry the game when I don't care about 8 little mini-plots.

I think the game would be GOTY material if you were to drop the initial character choice down to the 4 'light' characters, force the player to go either direction around the whole LV1 map, and actually integrate the character interaction with an overarching plot that starts once all 8 characters were in the party.
Yeah I think there are so many ways they could've done the "8 scenarios" concept much better. They wanted to make it so you could recruit/progress any character in any order, but the price for that was they had to make the stories modular and independent of each other. And your choice of main character made no impact aside from that character being forced in your party.

Octopath got so much hype because of its superficial resemblance to classic 16 and 32-bit JRPGs but it's not even in the same ballpark in terms of story and character development. Just imagine how much worse games like FF IV, FF VI, and Chrono Trigger would be if your party members didn't interact with each other or have any importance to the plot.

Don't want to be raped, but Yakuza 6 is my disappointment for 2018.
Don't get me wrong, it is still a wonderful game, but it felt lacking in the combat department, especially after 0 and Kiwami's great combat system. Let's just say that the switch to Dragon Engine helped a lot, but not everything was an improvement.

Iconoclasts. Looks great but lacks atmosphere. Fair props to the guy who made it because it took him a long time but it felt like it needed a lot of edits.

We Happy Few. So much wasted potential. Literally no saving graces, I feel bad for people who paid anything for this whilst it was on Kickstarter, they got ripped off nice and proper.

Octopath Traveler.

I was enamored with the demo. But by the 15 hour mark I just couldn't force myself to play anymore.

8 mediocre-to-bad stories interleaved with each other, with very little connecting them. Zero interaction between party members aside from those little private actions that take place in some other dimension.

Battle system was fun at first but got stale once I'd unlocked all the abilities I was interested in. Even with the passive that cuts random encounters in half it was just too much. You end up fighting the same few enemies over and over, just going through the motions.

The field skills were likewise neat at first but quickly turned into an annoyance. Locked chest? Better backtrack a few screens and put the edgelord thief in your party. Most of the % based skills just added a lot of tedium to exploring the towns.

Octopath is probably the most overrated JRPG I've ever played (tied with Golden Sun at least).

This is what I also feel about the game. The game just became too exhausting and frustrating for me that I never really bothered coming back. Also I'm not going to say I was disappointed with the game because I was never really hyped or expected too much on the game when it was first announced.

Dragon Ball FighterZ was incredibly shitty. Huge disappointment.

Octopath Traveler also sucks more than anticipated. Can't get into it.

It has to be red dead redemption 2 for me it just didn't click.

The controls were awful and I couldn't bring myself to care enough about the characters to suffer trough the gameplay.

I can see why people like it but it's just not for me.

Well i guess you can't be dissapointed when you don't have expectation..............

I 'only' baught : Divinity II Original Sin, Pillars Of Eternity II and SFV Arcade Edition this year.

Since I don't spent money on a product without being well informed i wasn't dissapointed, logic hu?

RDR 2 even though I think it's still a good game ..and I have a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach Darksiders III will be added to this list ..but I must know what happens

Celeste. Don't get me wrong, the game is a lot of fun, but IGN set the bar quite high with their 10. I'd say at best, the game is a 7. It's a challenge sure but other than that and its charm, there's not much there. It's repetitive and shallow.

People picking red dead redemption 2 as biggest disappointment has to be some kind of knee jerk reaction or attention seeking?

Picking up possibly one of the biggest GOTY contender as most disappointing game is kinda an absurd idea

Think harder, there's plenty other crappy game lying around like sea of thieves and many others

The thread is most disappointing, not worst. Even though RDR2 is my GOTY, I can absolutely see why people could disappointed. The world, characters, story, atmosphere, environments, etc. are all top notch, but the actual game has some incredibly frustrating aspects and limiting factors. Many people don't want to tap X to ride between shootouts for 40 hours, even if we loved every minute of it. Considering it's being heralded as the game of the generation it's easy to understand that some people don't think it lives up to the hype.

We Happy Few. So much wasted potential. Literally no saving graces, I feel bad for people who paid anything for this whilst it was on Kickstarter, they got ripped off nice and proper.

I was gonna mention this, but as soon as the word got out pre-release about it being primarily a survival game, I knew it was DOA. Should have been a Shocklike from the get-go.

This year I got :
Dragon Quest XI
Octopath Traveller
Fist of the North Lost Paradise
SMT Strange Journey Redux
Valkyria Chronicles 4
God of War
XC2 Torna The Golden Country
Ni no Kuni 2
And none of them disappointed me. Honestly 2018 was fantastic year for me.
As I was reading this list I thought they were gonna be games you were disappointed with and I was like no freaking way those are some great games.

No attention seeking on my part.

RDR2 is the game I personally was most disappointing by. I just did not enjoy playing it.

Is it the worst game that came out this year? Absolutely not. But that wasn't the question. The way I understood it was that we were asked about our personal view, not an objective review.

I played a lot of good games this year and managed to avoid the bad ones. So there are no other games that came to mind when thinking about disappointments.

I don´t think I have played any disappointing games this year. There is usually one or two duds per year that worms its way past my good shit-radar but I´ve managed to only play good shit in 2018 which indicates that my good shit-radar have been extra good this year. Now that is some good shit.

The most dissapointing game of the year for me is Battlefield 5. Multiplayer maps, shotting mechanics animations are very bad and the opponents look like small dots in front of you.

In spite of somewhat enjoying it initially, for me, I think I have to go with Madden 19.

While the game is as gorgeous as it's ever been, it's still hampered by some of the same basic AI bullshit that existed 20 years ago. AI receivers still can't catch a ball in the flats without running out of bounds for a loss, AI still can't execute a screen play, that type of shit. It renders solo play, which is my preference since so many online players are childish douchebags with no interest in realistic play or sportsmanship, a 3rd-rate experience.

Meanwhile, SOOOO much effort has gone into bell-and-whistling MUT, it's painfully obvious where the focus of this game lies. If even a fraction of the effort poured into this time-and/or-money-devouring beast was spent on improving the football IQ of the AI, Madden could almost be a true representation of the sport it has exclusivity to.

Instead, it's just another back-alley swindler in a shiny suit.

It's been this way for a long time, I know. I actually gave up on the franchise several years ago. But, it comes with Origin Premier on PC, and I got a little hyped at the idea of playing Madden on PC again. Silly boy.

In this order

  1. Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!
  2. Fallout 76
  3. Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom
  4. The Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep
  5. Shadow of the Tomb Raider

I'm prob inviting trouble by stating this, but Zelda: BOTW. There are no words to describe how much I hate it. Put in 85 hours hoping it would get better. it didn't and I sold it to gamestop. There are a few others I could add to the list, but nothing good would come of it since they are popular games, and I don't want to deal with toxic fanboys.
Wow that is some devotion right there. I applaud your effort though. 85 hours. I have a hard to putting that much time into single player games i like :)

I don't know if there are any games I was really disappointed in this year. Didn't play a whole lot of new stuff though.

Far Cry 5, and DBFZ. two £59.99 drunken purchases on day one., both extremely disappointing.

Soul Calibur 6 as well. Shit even the Psp versions of SC4 and Tekken 5 DR had more content. Why? Put a fucking ghost mode in your games, or an Arcade League mode like in Tekken 5 DR on the Psp, Jesus. There's your single player content sorted, thats' all you need. VF4 and VF5 had the idea. Namco had the idea in the past.

Blows my mind Psp fighting games had more longer lasting single player content than, the last two gens of console releases. Look at how Dissidia been butchered now.
I was disappointed that there wasn't a survival mode in it

God of War no contest. Sold it pretty quick after I got through it and will not purchase a sequel if it's more of the same.

I'm not sure you understand the idea behind this thread.

I have a slightly different take on this one. I was really looking forward to playing Ark Park PSVR. While I understand the technical limitations of the PSVR, I had hoped that it might replicate the feeling of scale in the Shark Encounter PSVR that is a basic tech demo. In short - I just hoped to be able to walk around near dinosaurs that were the size of the real thing - which is something that Shark Encounter really does well.

Instead, Ark Park PSVR was a buggy mess with stale 2D graphics that suck away every ounce of immersion. And, amazingly, they are still selling the game for full price.

They are adding a bunch of shit with the black armory so it could bring ya back.

Mmm yeah I forgot about this. I got really into reading about Norse mythology while playing the game but a few months later I realised that I enjoyed everything about the game but the game itself. Storytelling was so Oscar bait.

Hollow Knight for me. I mean it's just pure hot garbage.

RDR 2, and I still really like it after all is said and done. It's just that sluggish controls and pacing and the fact you walk around camp like you have a sprained ankle...

Most games I have an expectation of how I will like it before I purchase. Sometimes it goes a notch higher, sometimes lower. I don't impulse buy. So a lot of the critically panned games other list... yeah I didn't buy them and there is no disappointment.

But with RDR 2, I thought I would love the fuck out of it. The controls and slow pace made me feel just positive about it. I am still at the end of Act V. The first half of Act V put a break to what I was liking about the game that I just had to put it down for a little bit. I'll return to it but... man it wasn't like this with RDR1

Mario Tennis Aces and Monster Hunter World.

I thought both games would just dominate my time, but I got over them both after around 20-30 hours.

Both faltered online - enough bad experiences turned me off, and I'm back on my old standbys of Street Fighter V, Splatoon 2, and Star Wars Battlefront II for my online gaming sessions.

I was firing up Mario Tennis Aces on occasion with my girlfriend, but now we're hooked on Full Metal Furies (highly recommended!). I only got on MTA once this month to grab Koopa Paratroopa.

Octopath traveler is a piece of linear crap disguised as having some liberty with the completely nonsensical stories that never tie together.

Dragon Quest XI is the easiest and most boring RPG I've ever played. If it weren't for Silvando the characters would be the blandest I've ever seen.

It's a coin toss between those two garbage games.

I agree with everything you said. It's amazing how core fundamental football can't be executed by the AI year after year and EA seems completely fine with it

Tempest 4000. What an utter piece of shit.

I have no idea how they managed to make a game worse than Tempest 2000 in 2018, but welcome to the World of Warcraft.™

The titles that i buy in this year

1.- Project Cars 2.- Definitive is not my type of game, is so boring, bad and horrible controls, to many patch that are huge and graphics are not great, only normal for the generation.

2.- Tekken 7.- For me is one of the Worst Tekken that i play in my life (Tekken Revolution is the worst product that ever play it) , lack of Characters, clunky Story, Too much DLC and are worst, Only the graphics and Costumes like Ling Xiaoyu are beautiful, but this game easy i can give a 6-7.
