boiled egg, tomato, mayonnaise, salt and pepper. The GOAT

Aside from an amazing Cuban Sandwich, my rule of thumb for best comfort sandwiches is it must taste great both warm and cold. Cuban sandwiches, tuna melts, and philly steaks satisfy that criterion. I absolutely cannot stand sandwiches that are made to be eaten cold. I'd even eat a cold meatball sub before that.

Toasted asiago bread from Panera, cold fatty ham cut thick from the whole ham in my fridge, a large portion of baby spinach, white american cheese.

Gimme a Rachel, any day of the week. I wouldn't sit home and make the comfort sandwich, I would drive to Stalzy's and let them make it for me. Most places don't do at least one thing right, bread, meat, coleslaw, one of them is always wrong. Stalzy's does them all, perfectly.

If it has to be a home made sandwich, though, it would probably be a BLT with spring/early summer tomatoes (farmers market each week), romaine or green leaf lettuce, thick cut bacon, and vidalia onion. Depending on the mood, a sunny side up egg.

My two favourites:

a) Toasted feta and spinach
b) Grilled cheese with marmite or bovril (or vegemite for you 'strayans if you don't have marmite).

Both are super easy to make.

I haven't had one in a year or so, but nothing beats a good chicken mayo sandwich. Shredded chicken breast, mayonnaise, perhaps a hint of garlic and onion, and a dash of salt and pepper. Spread that between two buttered slices of toast and maybe add some bacon.

dutch crunch
pepper salami
fresh mozzarella
basil
spinach
with some salt and paper and a tap of olive oil, maybe if some garlic aioli is around, toss that on the bread.

Forget the bread I'll just be spooning some PB&J.

I also like to make breakfast sandwiches. Bacon, egg, cheese, maybe some crema for dipping.

The Reuben - A classic.

BLT - Thick cut peppered bacon, sliced green tomatoes, lettuce and some nice toasted bread with mustard instead of mayo = mouth heaven.

Salami and bread, or peanut butter and bread.

Grilled cheese is a pretty good answer too.

I question how some of you consider your complicated sandwiches comfort food. Fried shrimp po-boy? That seems like a lot of effort.

Hummus, Avocado, Cucumber, and some sprouts. Something like this:

What, you don't wake up hungover, clean a bunch of shrimp and fire up the deep fryer?

Mozzarella and Pesto toasted sandwich

Throw some sliced Pepperami in there, since I have no idea where to buy suitable pepperoni from in the UK

Crisp sandwich.

Walkers crisps - 1x packet of Salt and Vinegar, 1x packet of Smoky Bacon

3x pieces of bread.

Plenty of real butter.

The best.
