Your favorite fighting game ever, and why its better than all the others?

SNK vs CAPCOM because Violent Ken

I can accept this reasoning.

Too many to list...

Same for me.

To list a notable few though.

KOF XIII
-Balanced enough where any and everyone is a threat.
-EX, Special/Super EX, (Hyper) Drive Cancel, Neo Max Systems
-Decent-sized roster
-Awesome aesthetics
-Best color customization I've ever seen for a 2D fighter
-Best story-telling attempt of the series
-EVO hype

KOF 2002UM
-Huge roster, including favorites of my favorite KOF story arc
-Awesome aesthetics

Virtua Fighter 5 FS
-Decent-size cast
-All fighters have varied styles (no clones), and good balance
-Great character customization
-Great stage variety
-Released at $15 (a steal imo)

The Guilty Gear series, mainly XX Accent Core but I love pretty much all of them. ac in particular has always felt like one of the most perfectly balanced fighters ever. I love pretty much everything about this series and have been awaiting a real fighting game sequel for years.

hopefuly Guilty Gear Xrd is as good as it looks.

Pfffff...

Garou Mark of the Wolves tops all of them for me. I don't know why but the feeling is just exactly right, the systems not too convoluted and it has Terry Bogard. Also, it has Terry Bogard.....

Terry Bogard.

Then we still got absolutely superb ones like Capcom vs SNK 2, Guilty Gear XX, Blazblue and so on. I also really liked Dead or Alive 4 on 360 but the D-pad on that controller, man. Seriously, they better have fixed that on the One, but I digress.

Also, don't forget Dong Dong Never Die

I'm not a competitor so I usually play as a fanboy. Which is why I love SFxTekken and...ahem... DoA5!

But my personal all-time favorite is Last Blade 2. Love Hibiki as a character and the sprite work is still beautiful even now.

Tekken 3 - Dr. B my man, and scrubby eddy player lol
Last Blade 2 - Cuz Setsuna, Kaoru, Kagami, Hibiki and Amano but im ass at the game
3rd Strike - Its a good game
UMK3 - Im really bad and the AI was a bitch but theres something about this game...
Alpha 3 - Great cast great music etc.

Guilty Gear XX #Reload

Sol Badguy and his Dustloop :'D

Blazblue, first fighter i really got into

I guess its for the same reason as guilty gear for many?

BB is really balanced, all the characters play uniquely, huge story compared to many fighter, funny as hell at times, and some crazy combos.

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo

It is better than all others because there's just nothing like going from one row left to pulling off an insane chain that clears your screen and you have time to turn to your friend and act out the crazy finishing move in slow motion while yelling RJKRYYFSYUUUUUUUUUUUUUKEEEEEN as their entire screen fills with blocks and flashes like a crazy anime.

LOVE IT.

+1 for SF2CE. No ultras, meters. Just combos and fighting strategy.

Then its( not in order)
MK I II & III
KI1
Tekken Tag 1
Hyper Fighting

I'm keeping track of everyone that says 3rd strike so i know i can ignore their opinion on any fighting game ever.

CvS2 is the shit, it has some balance issues and roll cancels are pretty stupid but it's still a great game.

Favourite 3D fighting game? Something from the Soul Calibur series, always loved the speed and fluidity that those games have. If I had to pick one? SC2 was one I loved, but methinks the arcade edition of SC3 is really underrated, it fixed many problems of the console original and even had Hwang and Li Long!

Favourite 2D fighting game? Definitely Arcana Heart 3. Large roster of unique (and, for the most part, viable) characters, and with the choice of the same number of Arcana, you can customise your character to fit your playstyle and/or to cover any weaknesses they may have. In addition to the numerous gameplay mechanics that would be familiar to veteran fighting game players, the Homing system makes the series stand out from the others, allowing for crazy air combos and insane vertical battles.

Honourable mentions for Blazblue CT, Tekken 5 DR and Guilty Gear AC+.

Smash Bros. Melee

I've never been able to get into other fighting games beyond the Smash series though. Somehow this up,down, slide left, a, b, down, down ... combo mechanic never clicked with me. Also, I strongly prefer Smash's dynamic platforming approach over any life bar-based one.
The first Smash Bros was great, of course, but Melee improved upon it in so many ways. Brawl, on the other hand, felt like a step backwards in some ways with the changes in some mechanics. So, Melee it is.

Mortal Kombat 3.

Learning all the fatalities and super long combo's is a childhood highlight of mine... plus dat gore and cardboard case it had.

Tatsunoko vs Capcom. It was my first VS game and it was a really fun fighter. Had an impressive roster and a lot to do and see.

Mentions also go to Smash Bros. Brawl.

Super Smash Bros. Melee. Why? Because it's ultimately the most fun and accessible of all the fighting-games I've played. It can be enjoyed very casually with a group of friends, or taken to the extremes by fiddling with the rule-set if one so desires.

It's also a game I'll never get tired of playing. I still fire it up for a match or two occasionally, and as long as my original Wii works, I'm going to continue doing that.

Tekken 3 was what really got me into fighting games, so I've always been a Tekken fan. 5 is my personal favourite, everything about it was perfect - the characters, variety of styles...I put endless hours into it.

Powerstone 1 by far.

I know it's lacks the multiplayer mayhem of Power Stone 2
I know it's not as complex as Virtua Fighter 3
I know it's not as beautiful as Soul Calibur.

Yet it was addictive! It inspired an excitement...a feeling of playing something new. The game was alive and kicked major...

I wan't Powerstone 1 HD with online play and I want it now!

Super Smash Bros. (Melee) is in another league to anything else for me.

Accessible controls, yet tonnes of depth. Doesn't really lend itself to button mashing as even a new player can figure out how it works fairly fast. Most fun multiplayer, lots of characters and variety in stages. Actually has effort put into its single player mode.

Virtua Fighter 4 and 5

1.) VF4 Evo's single player game
2.) Approachable, 3 Button controls
3.) Depth comes from strategy AND execution
4.) Character design and movesets

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike

1.) Parries!
2.) Added a lot of new characters to the series
3.) Universal over head and 2 button throws
4.) Beautiful art and animation, wonderful soundtrack

Soul Calibur 1 and 2

1.) Guard impact and parry system
2.) SLIDES - any game with slide kicks
3.) Lizardman!

Honorable Mentions
MK9 - Story mode is fantastic, and the speed and flow of the game is great
PSASBR - Pretty much only played Drake, but his move set is insanely fun. Slide Kick!

The Rival Schools/Project Justice series.

An amazing cast with one of the most unique takes on the genre. Incredibly fun. I love all the extra non-fighting modes the series has too, they really get you to connect with the characters.

I really enjoyed Virtua Fighter 5 and BlazBlue (First one), personally.

Both have tight controls, and I enjoyed creating interesting combos. I thought they were well balanced, but I'm not super hardcore. BlazBlue was my first game with my arcade stick, so maybe I have nostalgia bias.

I don't play fighting games a lot, but I loved Tobal No 1 a lot. I think it was the second PSX game I bought, and it was the first fighter that felt actually 3D to me, and at 60FPS it was so smooth for its time.

Quest mode was also amazing.

Since moving to Japan, I've been meaning to track down Tobal 2, and have a few times, but have been too lazy to buy it.

To me, balance is everything and I think SF4's got most games out there beat. Infiltration beat PRRog with Hakan and a Gen won EVO.

'Nuff said.

DBZ:Bodukia 3.
So much stuff to do, moves to pull, things to learn and memories have been had.
Next up is P4A, yeah I'm not the biggest fighting gamer but this is the first time I started to go online with it and it was a blast.

SF2 because I'm god with Ryu

DOA4 because I can easily troll my way out online fights with cheaparse Brad Wong backflips

Alpha 2. One of the prettiest 2d fighters. Relatively less broken (lol) than Alpha 1 or 3. Played it for hours on hours both in the arcades and on my saturn.

I have a few different favorite fighters, for different reasons.

Best Playing: SF3 3rd Strike, w/o fail. It may not be the most balanced SF, but it's the pinnacle of the series so far as combat fluidity is concerned. Parries really opened up the level of options at your disposal (I prefer 2nd Impact's air parry system, though), and the amount of unique character-specific combos and juggles made it feel more like a real fight.

Also ironically, it's easier to jump into 3rd Strike than any of the IV games, though at the highest levels 3rd Strike shames them. Not to mention, I actually like what the series did for the story (moving it forward), and most of the characters save Sean (dumbed way down) and Twelve were good additions to the canon, either in design/story, play-style, or both. I also enjoyed the soundtrack, some tracks much more than others, tho honestly 2nd Impact has the better soundtrack of the two overall (the two best songs of the series belong to 3rd Strike tho).

In fact, 2nd Impact has the better backgrounds as well, but since this is my Best Playing pick it easily goes to 3rd Strike.

Best Atmosphere: Real Bout Fatal Fury 2. Everyone thinks KOF when they think of SNK fighters, but the game that got me into their stuff and to respect their contributions to the genre was this game right here. SNK nailed the stages down perfectly; extremely varied and bursting with life. The character designs all felt refined and fit perfectly into the FF mythos. Music was very appropriate, and I enjoyed quite a few of the tracks personally.

But what impressed me most was how SNK managed to finally fine-tune the game mechanics. This was probably the last of the "traditional" Fatal Fury games, and as such still has the plane-switching and somewhat more "constricted" feel to it vs. the later SFII and Alpha games. Even so, the creativity on display regarding the moves was insane. Hon-Fu perfectly channeling that 90s action movie Jackie Chan vibe; Billy Kane's moveset perfectly encapsulating the asshole that he is. Rick coming out as a surprisingly good Dudley sort of character. Everyone just feels so well fleshed-out and a joy to play as. Not to mention the power hits look like they hurt DEVASTATINGLY HARD!.

Garou is usually everyone's top pick for FF game; I greatly enjoy its mechanics and the characters were great additions, but bit-for-bit RBFF2 beats it in almost every way for me.

Best Odd-Pick Fighter: Breakers Revenge/Cyberbots : These two fighters are the sort I wouldn't of gotten into unless some heavy convincing were done, or I tried them on a bored day. They've found a place in my heart, tho.

Breakers Revenge in a lot of ways is a pretty big ripoff of the SFA and FF series, insofar as how the game mechanics go. And in terms of character designs it shamelessly pillages from SFII. But it's a real blast to play, and the characters have a nice moveset. Breaking is also a really cool gameplay mechanic, and something I wish was followed up on more.

Cyberbots has to be the most slept on fighter Capcom's ever made. It's sort of spiritual successor to Mecha Warriors, and a spiritual predecessor to Tech Romancer. The fighting is very frantic for giant robots, and the animated character portraits are a treat. Music is fantastic and the difficulty is more than adequate. All in all, feels really bad-ass to be a giant robot but move with the fluidity of a ballet dancer.

Honorable Mention(s): Guilty Gear XX (eclectic soundtrack, great character designs, insanely fun gameplay), Street Fighter EX and EX2 (best new character designs of the SF series since the SFII games, very strong soundtrack, not too shabby play system), Melee (why not), and Tekken 5 (last Tekken I played seriously).

-----------

There are still a good few fighters I want to play, mainly VF5, Daraku Tensei, Astra Superstars, and Martial Masters; maybe they'll become new favorites in a way or two. But as-is, these are my definitive picks.

From a production standpoint - Garou. I love the grahics, music, effects, pacing. It's just really fun to play at a casual level. Too bad it sucks when you start digging deep :/

From a design/competitive standpoint - Original Super SF4. Divekick cammy. enough said!

Not in America it isn't...

Or in Japan. It's really only played obsessively in one arcade. Tekken and it's customizable outfits dominate over there with the casual crowd.

Tekken 2 - Bunch of friends would come over and we'd play winner stays on for hours and hours. If you won 5 straight you had to exclusively use Konimitsu until you lost. Lots of good memories with great friends.

If there's anyone who plays VF due to a surplus of new opponents, they're a rare breed and theyve got a lucky community. It's a brilliant game, and long VF sessions are more intimate and rewarding than any other fighter I've played, but no one's in it for popularity.
