Your Favorite Final Fantasy And Why

FFX is easily the best one in my book. Loved all of the characters, and is home to my favorite story. One of my favorite games of all time.

It's followed (in order) by FF7, and FF6/FF8 tying for third.

  • Awesome soundtrack
  • Likeable Cast of characters, even the enemies
  • 3 different overworlds
  • You go to THE MOON
  • Crazy boss designs
  • Not forced to leave anyone behind
  • Was my intro to the series, played it with family members so its seared into my memories

FFVIII.

FFVII was the first rpg I played when I was about 11 years old and I loved it, it was a totally new experience.
The version I got came with a demo of FFVIII which still had to come out back then, and I got extremely hyped for it and got it on the release date.
It didn't disappoint, I think it will always be my "best game ever" if only for the nostalgia.:D

IX since it was the first that managed to display the epic scale of the classic FF's in a way that didn't look ugly and it didn't take itself seriously at all. Added bonus the only bishie in the game is the one you have to kill.

My favorite tends to be the last one I played. If I stepped away though and thought about it, I'd say it generally jumps between 6, 7, and 9. I don't outright dislike any of them, perhaps maybe II.

IV is my favorite not simply because of nostalgia - I think it's one of the more balanced FF games, five character parties, and of course, it has a fun story.

I've never quite understood the immense love VI gets. It's a good game don't get me wrong, but I always liked III, IV, V, VII, and IX more than it. To each his own I guess.

I cannot decide, as my favourites are equally loved.

FF IX :
-I am assuming that ZephyrFate has gushed earlier in the thread, look at his responses.

FF V -
-Gilgamesh
-Kick ass job system,
-Gilgamesh
-Minimal 'story' (thank god),
-Also GILGAMESH

FF X-2 :
-Kick ass job system, no other reason to pick up the game.

FF XII :
-Gilgamesh (Oh DiMaggio, i love you. Please come back!)
-Gambits (well done scripts on a console? Thank you!),
-Beautiful art (not counting the party. The scions were amazing)
-Bad ass bestiary, godly lore
-Awesome quests (well they sucked as quests, one the worst in the series, but they were amazing as mini-MH)
-Amazing localisation (best in an RPG so far by far).
-Cid
-Al-Cid
-Balthier (yes they each deserve to be separate points)

If i had to chose, i would go for X-2.

Definitely VII

It introduced me to the genre that is the RPG and it's been my favorite since then.
Great cast with an amazing 3D world that I was not aware was even possible at that time.

Well first I'd like to say that I've never played a bad Final Fantasy game. All of the ones I've beaten have been highly enjoyable games.

Final Fantasy X is my favorite one though. Mainly for the incredible world, entertaining story, and awesome turn-based combat. I still find the world to be really compelling. Even though all of the areas are super linear they're still really interesting. I liked how every place had a purpose and throughout the journey it was very clear where you were going and why.

The story was very interesting - It had its problems, but overall I was very happy with it. The twists actually surprised me and I thought the ending was fantastic. Some of the characters were kinda annoying but I thought most of them were pretty good. I think Rikku is the only character in the party that I didn't like. Some of the voice acting was off too, but again I felt most of it was pretty decent(& i don't think the laughing scene was done poorly. There are sections that are bad though).

Battle system is my favorite in the series. ATB is alright but I've always liked true turn based better. Being able to switch party members on the fly was also great and I really liked the sphere grid. Only disappointment is how easy the main story was. I practically never got game overs my first time through, but I suppose most FF games are pretty easy.

Overall I just thought it was an incredibly enjoyable game. Just thinking of the locations of Spira make me want to play the game again - So many awesome sights.

FF11 - Never touched it. Though I don't consider it canon or official or whatever you want to call it. However, I will say that any game that requires you to wait in line and waste real life time to get a fucking quest is retarded.
They only did that once that I can remember, and there was only a wait the first day. The line was for the quest BC that you need to fight to get your personal NPC.

As far as interesting characters and plot go, I can't see how you would overlook FF6 in light of that, on the other hand. (Not to mention that there's practically no grinding if that's where you're going with your initial statement.)
I haven't overlooked 6, I just haven't played it but would really like to. How is the ps1 version? Is it worth paying $58 AUD ($53 USD) for it? Or should I wait for a PSN release?

X is just fine. Truth is, all FFs are good to great. Personally can't stand VIII though.

Yesterday I tried the demo for FFVIII that came with Brave Fencer Musashi. I was very disappointed. Didn't like any of the initial characters and the magic system was completely fucked. I did like the Leviathan summon though. I might give it another shot if it was released on PSN for a decent price. It's not like there are tons of choices for RPGs on PSP/PS3.

My vote is for IV. It had the best characters. Currently playing through 5 and 9 for the first time. Enjoying both.

No. The only SNES to GBA port I would recommend over the original would be that of FFV.

Find the SNES version of FF3/6 if you can by any means. The music was botched in both of the ports.

Well, my personal checklist would be quite long.

What's hard to follow is whenever a fan of FF7 is apathetic at best towards FF6, given that it did many of the similar things first, yet arguably better.

It's really not that bad, man. Changed a little yeah, but it's forgivable for all the fixed glitches and translation overhaul.

Also FF4 GBA >>>>> FF2 US. Doesn't even compare.

The thing about that is that I don't have a snes. So the music is botched in the ps1 version? Explain! I'm on the verge of clicking buy now for the ps1 version.

The PS1 is effectively the same game as the SNES version, just with slight changes to the script (and I mean slight) a few bugs worked out, and it's full of awful load times. It's easily the worst version, I can't really recommend it. Ultimately though, the experience on PSX is more or less identical to the SNES version, but the loading just kills it.

Yeah, I had one of the big grey ones. I figured if I ever wanted another I would just pick up a lite down the track.

Does playing ps1 games on a ps3 do anything to the load times? I might just wait for a PSN release.

I don't remember massive loading issues - slight slowdown in battle, but nothing severe. Keep in mind that it has been a long time since I played it though...

Slowdown in battle, loading to get into a menu, loading when switching from overworld to battle. It's definitely there, though it fares better than FFV and CT for PSX.

X-2. If only for the excellent combat/job system. It's only one I've come close to finishing.

I seriously don't know why people took the game's story and dialogue so seriously when the game itself obviously wasn't.

I mean Paine can make a Vanilla Ice reference in battle, freaking Vanilla Ice.

Personally I found X-2 to be the best PS2 FF game. Like you said, it's incomprehensible why people take the game so seriously.

You are not alone. I don't dislike VI, I'm just indifferent towards it now. I really need to change my avatar to the FFV magic pot :D

VIII is one of those FFs that you'll either love or hate. I ended up not caring for it, but there were some interesting pieces to it. I'd like to replay it too, just to see if time has changed anything. The junction system was pretty deep in theory, but in execution seemed punishing and tedious. I did love Triple Triad though. And VIII has, hands down, the best final dungeon in the series.

"Ice, Ice baby"

I have a strange relationship with the game. I know by all right s i should hate it like i hate so many games like it, but it is so damn fun(even without the BS) if you are not willing to take it seriously.

Helps that i never liked FFX's world to begin with.

Because people are stupid. No two ways about it, people are just stupid. It's funny because the same people who blasted X-2 for being a girly, poppy game will probably eat up FFXIII without seeing the irony in it all. The irony being that XIII is just as poppy, girly, and ridiculous as X-2. Shit, I'd be willing to bet a good deal of money that it'll be worse in all those aspects. X-2 doesn't really take itself seriously while FFXIII, on the other hand, is full-on jRPG nonsense that takes itself way too seriously.

What? Why is the GBA version not a good port? It adds new content, sharpens the graphics, and the new translation is better than ever. Yes, the sound is a bit of a downgrade thanks to the tinny speakers of the GBA, but it is definitely the superior version. There is no debating this.

Before I gave up on Final Fantasy around 2003, FFVI. It was the most developed of the 3 FF's I got to play in the US, and it's basically the kind of RPG I like.

I'm playing through FFIV:tAY and that may end up taking the crown from FFVI for me these days. If only because its organized into shorter stories that I can finish before I can't play for 3 weeks and forget what was going on.

Overall, for when I played it, still FFVI.

So the final verdict is that I shouldn't get the ps1 version of FFVI?
If you have no other options, play it. The game is worth it. The first time I ever played FF6 was on the PSX because I didn't get into FF until after 7 and I powered through it, but I'll never go back to it now that other options are at my disposal.

The FFVI FMV opening is probably my favorite on PSX. It's amazing. Soooo amazingly epic, and so artistically done that I'm disappointed Square didn't put such effort in any of the other ports.

Especially the FFIV PSX FMV... UGGGGHHH WHERE DID THAT COME FROM

Final Fantasy VII. It's the only one in the series that I was able to keep interest in until the end. Even the highly-regarded FFVI couldn't hold my attention as much, which is weird.

Something about FFVII just really worked for me.

Heh.

Again, to not care for or like FF6 while at the same time be a major fan of FF7 is an anomaly in my book.

It's not that I never liked VI. Quite the contrary. But elements of other entries in the series have grown on me (job system of V, music and characters of IX) and the overall complete enjoyment I get from VII have bumped VI down to that nebulous middle tier. Don't love it, don't hate it. And I do take a few issues with the game, but that is probably best left for a different thread. Kefka's cool though.

I am offended at your use of the mighty Chupon avatar. >:(

Now, I played VIII for well over 100 hours when I was younger, and yeah I had fun. I just can't replay the game though. The starting is so damned slow and boring, the story is the second worst in the main series (after XII), the battle system is the worst in the main series, the art style is so damned uninspired, and the music has god damned steel drums. >:(

I challenge you to play FF VIII and have fun while drawing 100 of a certain spell for 15 minutes while an enemy wails on you. Had fun? Well now, guess what? You get to associate it to a stat! But careful, don't use the magic you've just drawn or your stat will decrease!

I won't say it's a bad game...I just don't like it.

I know what you mean. But I always felt that FF7 was actually weaker in respective fields, really. Ergo, I eventually felt that FF7 was kind of superfluous instead of the other way around.

Just watched through that entire FF VIII review linked earlier in the thread. I forgot just how little the plot made sense. :lol

Final Fantasy 6= Good plot, characters, world, and villain. Nice combat and update system. Didn't get the respect it deserved after FFVII popularized the series. Ironic that this game looks better now than the 3-D PS1 FFs.

^^ like this the best overall but gameplay wise Final Fantasy 12 is head and shoulders above any RPG for me when it comes to gameplay. The gambit system and the fluidity of combat, the awesome dungeon design was excellent. Story sucked ass though and I wish the game's directors hadn't been switched midway through development. I'm such an FFXII fanboy that I wish Square would rerelease it w/trophies and 100+hrs of new DLC. Such a shame the story sucks otherwise it could've been my favorite FF title. This game made me contemplate sex with Vieras and I hope they don't smell like animal just in case that ever happens.
