I am offended at your use of the mighty Chupon avatar. >:(

Now, I played VIII for well over 100 hours when I was younger, and yeah I had fun. I just can't replay the game though. The starting is so damned slow and boring, the story is the second worst in the main series (after XII), the battle system is the worst in the main series, the art style is so damned uninspired, and the music has god damned steel drums. >:(

I challenge you to play FF VIII and have fun while drawing 100 of a certain spell for 15 minutes while an enemy wails on you. Had fun? Well now, guess what? You get to associate it to a stat! But careful, don't use the magic you've just drawn or your stat will decrease!

I won't say it's a bad game...I just don't like it.

Refine item/card into magic was there for a reason, you obviously failed at it. Maybe if you put 10 minutes out of that 100 hours into reading, you'd probably enjoy it more. The only time I ever used draw was for rare magic and summons.

Final Fantasy XII: Because I loved the voice acting, battle system and it was not about saving the world/galaxy for once but trying to save a kingdom. I loved the gambit system, I truly didn't understand it until I fought the techno spider boss and using commands for my team to fight the smaller spiders while I go after the boss. It sucks that a lot of people didn't like it, I suppose many wanted turned based gameplay again and again, but I loved the gambit system.

I want to play through FFXII one of these days, my copy has just been sitting there after I rage quited when my save got corrupted. I have a save 2 hours prior but I don't want to play through the boring ass section of the game again.

If you want to watch a movie instead of play a game, I hear Twilight: New Moon is out in theaters. It should suit your taste. :D

VI, followed closely by IV, V, and XII.

Final Fantasy VI is fan-fucking-tastic. It doesn't take itself too seriously (VII, VIII, X, and probably XIII), has loads of imagination, and a nearly perfect pacing.

Final Fantasy VII kind of disappoints me. I feel like it could have been so good if the entire game was set in a massive version of Midgar and the characters weren't so flat. I mean, Terra had her moments of being whiny and useless, but Aeris is just mind-bogglingly vapid nerdbait. She exists to die, and we're supposed to care because she's so sweet and innocent. But I don't. Because she didn't do anything or develop her personality. Tits McGee is also the most puzzlingly empty lead female I've ever seen.

Well FF7 is a big favorite but FFX is also one of my favorite Final Fantasy's

The reason for FF7 is because is that was one of the first FF i ever played and its a good gaming memory for me.

And FFX was just awesome nice graphics nice story with great memorable characters.

My favorite to date is Matrix's remake of III for DS. It had everything I could want in an FF game -- traditional, turn-based battles, a job system, cute characters that weren't emo, and enough story but not too much. FF IV and VII are hella over-rated though still great in their own way, IX was fun but not my favorite -- for all three of those games, I never fell in love with the ATB system -- and XII I thought had greatness in it, and I sure did love to tinker with things in that game, but the battle system was too passive for me to overcome the obnoxious amount of grinding required. I went back to play I & II on GBA a while back, but it was too antiquated for me to settle into. I do, however, want to eventually check out X, as it looks like it could be another great balance of what I like in those games.

It can take much longer refining/playing cards instead of drawing some spells, I'll never understand that mindset. It's best to utilize all the various methods; it can take forever to get TO some spells if all you do is draw, and it can take forever to get a crapload of cards or some items to simply refine. So you failed, too.

5 in the bottom tier? You sir, are out of your mind.

I suppose I am but I never did like it that much. Obviously I played it when I was much older, so maybe that contributes, but visually I always found it awkwardly between 4 and 6, the job system, while better than 3's, still isn't super fun for me, the story isn't really enjoyable (neither in the sense of the high aspirations of 6/7 nor the simple adventure story of 1/2/3/4)...

I mean, still a totally playable game and pretty polished but it's just not the FF for me.

You can basically cakewalk through the entire game by modding tents into Curagas in Balamb Garden and junctioning 100xCuraga to either attack or HP. I think it'll be the middle of Disc 3 before you really need to make any kind of effort to draw or mod anything else.

Yeah, I thought I was pretty awesome when I got a bunch of Curagas early on the first time I played. I'm just commenting on the folks that say DRAW DRAW DRAW or REFINE REFINE REFINE, they're both bad methods. A combination of both can get you some spells in less playtime.

Final Fantasy Tactics has my favorite story and gameplay. So I choose that one. Too bad it got so bogged down with religion, the politics and characters were so much more interesting.

What's hard to follow is whenever a fan of FF7 is apathetic at best towards FF6, given that it did many of the similar things first, yet arguably better.

Depends on what game you played first, I guess. I didn't play VI until after I'd played VII, VIII and IX, and while I love VII and IX, I honestly don't like VI much at all. It just never clicked with me.

I mean Paine can make a Vanilla Ice reference in battle, freaking Vanilla Ice.

I officially need to play FF X-2 again.

I have played Final Fanatsy 7,8,9,10,10-2 and 12. And i love them all to death. They were/are amazing games all of them.
But if I should pick one that has stayed with me it has to be Final Fantasy 10. That game had something special that made me love it the most. So much that I have played through it 5 times..
Everytime I buy a Final Fantasy game I also buy the official strategy guide from piggyback. I play through the game once. And then I play it again with the guide, so that I visit every corner of the games.. The only game I didn´t do that with is 12, but that is because of www.gamefaqs.com..

VI. The story, artwork, and music were all absolutely top notch. I never see any love for the Zozo theme(Slam Shuffe) so let's throw that on the pile of awesome music already linked in this thread. Anyway, Kefka, WoR, etc... Easily the top for me.

X had the best battle system, but I liked the classical theme from 9....
and 7 had the best characters.....

but I have to give the nod to.....FFX :D

I put hours and hours into triple triad. I'd never do it again though.

You're not going to be able to get all magic that way at all. It doesn't change the fact that the magic system is broken.

Yeah pretty much.

I guess I play with a different mindset. If I have the chance to get 100 Fires and junction it to my strength, I'm going to do it. Regardless of whatever method you chose to get magic, it's a pointless waste of time, and that's my point.

I'll be honest, it has been too many years since I have played the final fantasy games to say what would be my favorite now. About 6 years ago I would have said that VIII is my favorite, but that was so long ago and my tastes have changed so I'm not sure any more. The most recently played one for me is IV and it was still awesome. I hope XIII could become my favorite!

.

OMG this so so much! I've tried to play FF6 loads of times over the years, but I just couldn't get into it. I got to the ruined world a few times, but I tend to lose interest around that point. I dunno what it is, but I never "felt" FF6.

And yeah, aside from Mystic Quest Legend, FF7 was my first.

*PAL gamer here*

FF6 actually took a few years to click with me, and even then, I could already tell that the characters of FF7 lacked depth by comparison, as did the narrative, and that there was a little too much flexibility offered by the materia system.

As far as FF8 goes, I'm sure someone will counter by bringing up using the "Card" ability to turn enemies into cards.

You know what I really dug about FFIII (and I've only played the DS remake)?

The final dungeon / boss. Very high challenge and no means of escape whatsoever.

The ridiculous thing about FFVI's soundtrack is that EVERY single track is memorable. That just doesn't happen, even in games where individuals tracks may be better.

Yeah, a lot of people criticize the game for not having save points in that dungeon, but I loved it. The sense of accomplishment you get from beating it feels like you have really accomplished something. That kind of difficulty has been missing from most FF games which seem to pepper dungeons with save points and ways to heal all your HP/MP especially right before bosses. Taking that security away really forced you to play your best in that tower.

This is probably true for some, but I played VI (and I and IV) first, and still prefer VII. I suppose at a certain point it just simply comes down to personal taste, and more of VII appeals to me than some of the earlier FFs. Though I really do enjoy V.

Man, this FFVI Ending Theme is giving me goosebumps. Shadow's Theme. Damn. So tragic.

Anyway:

FFVI - World of Ruin is an RPG concept that, to me, has never again been successfully implemented. What an awesome game.

FFVII - I love this game, partially due to nostalgia glasses. So many things blew my mind: The FMV, the look-and-feel of Midgar, learning there was a gigantic world OUTSIDE of Midgar to explore, the death, Gold Saucer, the Cloud's Mind sequence...so much to love.

FFIX - Old-school done right. The first mainline FF game that I feel had truly excellent writing, the cast of characters was fantastic, the music was amazing, the art design wonderful, and the whole game had this patina of light-heartedness and love.

FFXI - Great job system + battle system, and if you can stick around for x-thousand number of hours necessary, Chains of Promathia has the single most badass plot in the series.

Tactics - Story didn't stick to me as well as some others, but the job system was addicting as hell. Ramza as a ninja was deadly.

The flexibility of the materia system is exactly why I love it :lol I dislike being forced to have specific characters as specific classes (i.e. having to use Garnet and Eiko as summoners and healers in FF IX, as they both were absolutely craptastic in battle)

fake edit: I'm pleased to see a 'favourite FF thread' actually turn out to be civil for once in a while :lol

If you dislike being forced to have characters adhere to archetypes or have limited skillsets, say sayonara to a good majority of the genre.
