Your favorite LGBT characters in Game

Kanji is definitely straight people, or at least bi. He falls in love with a girl, and has the hots for Chie/Yukiko, and the only time he really acts "gay" are some comments towards Teddie that can be interpreted in a sexual manner but are mostly just for comic purposes. Naoto dressing like a man is irrelevant, Naoto isn't trans. She still identifies as a woman, she just hates that women get no respect as police officers and feels she HAS to be man to follow her dreams. Their shadows represent the toxic sides of gender role conformity and how they can cause young people to doubt and self-loathe when their own interests and opinions don't line up. Yosuke is still kind of a shit for the way he treats Kanji after though, even if he's not gay.

I always liked Venom from Guilty Gear. He's gay (and in love with Zato-I) but I appreciate how its handled subtly. Fighting games don't have a great history with handling stereotypes with any sort of delicacy, but with Venom you wouldn't really even know outside of his kinda effeminate demeanor but knowing adds some serious depth to his backstory. On the flip side people Bridget isn't gay, he just dresses like a girl because he always has since he was a kid. It wasn't even his choice, his parents did it for him.

Juhani from KOTOR 1 was a lesbian, and as far as I can remember also the first gay Star Wars character.

I have to echo Samantha Traynor from Mass Effect 3 and Kanji from Persona 4. To me it seems like Kanji is bisexual, and even though it's ambiguous I like to see it that way as there really isn't much LGBT representation in games. It's also not too much of a reach to see Chie and Yukiko as being in love with each other, if you choose to play the game that way.

The way Adrain Andrews is implied to be gay in Ace Attorney: Justice For All sat well with me (as did some other subtle implications throughout that series). However, the AA series also has some incredibly in-your-face LGBT stereotypes too, but I enjoy it as a part of that zany universe.

I really like Dorian from Dragon Age Inquisition. He's a good guy coming from a place full of nasty people, he becomes a real bro and his personal side-quest ties into his sexuality and how that caused problems for him in his homeland where you don't want gay sons because you want to carry on a strong magic bloodline to continue your families power in that country. It was nice to have a gay character where them being gay was important to who they were and the struggles they faced but at the same time not their sole characteristic.

Bonus points to DA:I for Krem.

He is? Really? First time I'm reading that.

Interesting.
Chris has quite the chemistry with Piers in RE6 but as far as I know Capcom never confirmed whether he was gay or not and the games don't make any definitive statements about it.
Personally I think he is bisexual. But either way it's just fan theories.

Completely agreed. Dorian is a perfect example of a character whose sexuality is a big part of who they are, without defining them. I thought the romances were generally very well done in DA:I, both straight and LGBT.

Bill and Ellie were gay in TLoU? Huh.
Bill, I guess I can see. Where was Ellie outed? In the DLC?

My pick has already been echoed with Dorian from DA:I.

So, for a new one, Gremio from Suikoden?

Subtle they aint.

Ellie is probably my favorite character in any game, so shes obviously #1, but there was that guy Makoto? in Enchanted Arms that was hilarious. stereotypical but still a fun character. also love Kaidan in ME and Gay/Bi shep.

The writers are not allowed to show any actual relationships in the games. Though the subtext some games give to him and Jill make it obvious who the writers ship.

The way I see Kanji in P4 is that he thinks he is gay because he likes to sew and stuff, which is not something masculine. The shadow world is an exaggeration of those thoughts "I don't fit well in the straight stereotype so I MUST be gay". But in the real world he is clearly straight.

Pretty much what I got as well, adding the whole Naoto thing to the reasons he was confused about his sexual identity.

Yosuke is the most homophobic character I've seen in a game to be honest.

Yeah, I love Yosuke otherwise but this was very jarring and the one thing bringing him down. It was also somewhat disturbing how literally nobody else called him out on it. It's probably reflective of truth, as I can imagine casual homophobia to be common in Japan high schools, where fitting in is so big of a deal, but for a series often calling this mentality and especially an installment challenging sexual roles and identities, it was jarring. :/

I want to think this is also because the game was originally released in 2008, and that things are better now.

The DLC is pretty clear about that.

Yes. Capcom is certainly aware of his fanbase with those fanservice outfits.
Still, they are just optional outfits. Not really an ingame statement about his sexual orientation.

Yeah. I think it's unfortunate. I would like to see more romance in Resident Evil.

Probably offensive in all kinds of ways but I love Poison (Final Fight, Street Fighter series).

Being as old as I am I fondly remember the 1980s glam metal gender-blurring imagery that inspired her creation.

Poison was turned into a trans woman because they thought that hitting a woman was too far, but hitting a trans woman was an acceptable compromise.

Hmm

There are a lot off good choices, but my absolute favorite has got to be Jun Kurosu from Persona 2

junsketch.jpg

On the surface, he's your stereotypical pretty boy with a sensitive nature and feminine hobbies, but in reality
he's a cold, violent and manipulative person. As Joker, he is the main antagonist for the first half of the game. When he rejoins the group, he lightens up considerably, but doesn't really lose to edge that made him a strong antagonist in the first place.

In the end, he manages subvert expectations by not being the token "gay guy" and ends up being a pretty solid character in his own right. The writers themselves support Tatsuya x Jun more than pretty much any of the other pairings, which is cool.

Gay Tony in the similarly titled expansion pack was the best character in the GTAIV universe. The way Rockstar subverted his initial stereotypical presentation in the main game was brilliant.

Jun Kurosu from Persona 2: Innocent Sin. He's effeminate, but he's also got all kinds of mental issues from his mother being a certifiable psychopath. Not to mention
being the fricking Joker.

Also, Kaneko considers him and Tatsuya the ideal pairing.
(I disagree, but hey.)

And beaten, heh.

ohh, I forgot about Krem from Dragon Age too. The best trans character around. I was disappointed you could't bring them into your party

Kinda like Fang X Vanille then.

I like the couples a lot, but it kinda detracts from the thread to post fanfic in here, haha.

Indeed, they're not, but this is just sexualization to sell costumes, Chris is well liked among gay RE fans, from what I've read, so it makes sense that Capcom would pander to this audience, because they want money.

I don't think you can define somone's sexual orientation by an alt costume, I guess that would be the point. Is Jill's BSAA costume straight, gay or bi? It doesn't really make much sense, unless it was contextualized.

i don't think so, it looks like there was the word "newhalf" (which is the japanese word for transgender person) in her concept art so she's probably trans from the beginning

unless they were fake, of course

On top of the development of Kanji's persona, there's also that he's a 15 year old kid. He's probably still sorting out his own feelings and doesn't even know himself if he's gay or not.

Very well-written character, anyway.

According to the book All About Capcom Head to Head Fighting Games, the characters were originally planned to be female, but were changed to "newhalfs" (a Japanese term for trans individuals) due to the suggestion that "hitting women was considered rude" in America and the concern that feminist groups would sue.

Oh haha, I just noticed NeoGAF's new animated logo. Congrats USA!

I always liked Heather from Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. Plenty of hints being dropped that she has a thing for girls, but the game doesn't make a big deal about it nor tries to create all these waaaacky situations about her sexual orientation.

Also Birdo from SMB2. That extra backstory does give her a little boost to me liking her and picking her in the Mario sports spinoff titles. I always thought she was supposed to be a male tranvestite at first and I thought it was pretty cool that NoE used the 'correct' pronouns... except that the way the SMB2 booklet goes about it actually means she's transgender and calling her male is a sure way to piss off LGBT folk. NoA dodged a bullet there :V

Now that I think about it tho there's not a lot of actual tranvestite characters I can think of.

God, those abs. <3

Meh, whatever reason she was originally created is largely irrelevant now. She's a beloved character (Poison for SFV, MAKE IT HAPPEN CAPCOM!) that gives the SF roster something unique.

If i recall, they're actually divided. :P Kaneko felt Jun was best, I think Okada was for Lisa and Tadashi was in favor of Maya. (Or maybe I just want to believe.)

He is openly gay in a video game, that like never happens, specially when the game first came out.

That's literally the only point in his favor, and he definitely isn't the first openly gay character in a video game either.

Stereotypical doesn't even begin to describe him. And he's just plain annoying.

He's really annoying!

smh Okada.

Yup, Kanji was really well made, my favorite Persona 4 character <3

Someone mentioned cameos in P5. I find it unlikely for every character but the MC, actually. He came from the city to the countryside, and P5 takes place in the city, he could be seen walking around in the background, but I don't think he would play any role in the story or anything of the sort.

Is "newhalf" really equivalent to "transgender" instead of more something less respectful like "shemale", though? Because I see that tag a lot when I'm... doing... research.

Do trans people in Japan identify themselves as a "newhalf"?
