Your Favorite Machine Gun/Assault Rifle

Single player pick:

For pure style (transformation!), mechanics (level up) and fun factor, nothing beats the Assault Rifle in Vanquish.

Multiplayer pick:

Silenced H&K MP5 from Rogue Spear. Couldn't find a good image. But, oh, the memories, sneaking around the Chalet double-tapping friends. Good times, good times.

The Machine Gun from Cave Story is pretty sweet. You can even use it as a makeshift jetpack!

Circa 2003. Eat your heart out, Halfbrick.

Goldeneye / Perfect Dark : AR33 Assault Rifle

Satisfying sound and muzzle flash.

Contra Games: Machine Gun Powerup

Speaking of Perfect Dark, the Laptop Gun was awesome.

I used to have Slayer, Laptop Gun, and mine wars (all of those weapons at once) in PD. One hit kills only. It was madness. Deploying the Laptop Gun as a Sentry is probably the smartest thing ever done with a machine gun. And you can pick it up after you throw it. So deadly.

My vote goes to the Halo SMG.

I mean, there's probably never been a more versatile and important starting weapon in Halo. Introduced in Halo 2, it was the anchor in some fine Dual Wielding combos. The best part about it though is that it took the sub par maps in Halo 2 and made them great. They required you to move around the map, searching for you enemies and possibly other weapons.

Mastering the SMG was difficult and an art that few could master. Pepper from long distances and while steadily firing at close range and closing in for the melee. An act of grace in an otherwise disjointed game and experience. It's removal from Halo Reach was a HUGE mistake on Bungie's part. Here's to hoping it makes a return to Halo 4.

I miss you SMG, always...and forever

The silenced SMG in ODST is the epitome of versatile and important weapons.

Although the Auto-Mag was god tier, without your trusty shield stripper and bugger killer, you wouldnt make it very far.

I also hope it returns in Halo 4.

M82 from Killzone ... nothing like it. Anywhere else... feels so gud. Special mentions to the STA-11, M4 pistola and m66 machine pistol. All sooooo good online.

Also.. the M4 from MGS4

AK from counterstrike

and if you haven't mobbed the mounted machine guns in crysis 2 your missing one of the few glorious things they did RIGHT in the sequel.

Fallout 3's unique "Xuanlong" Chinese assault rifle. You get it so early and it's useful throughout the entire game. Much havoc was caused throughout the DC wastes with this baby.

Love the challenge of using a single shot rifle. When successful, it's immensely satisfying. I only began playing FPS with COD4 and couldn't handle the M14 then, but it's a major reason why I played MW3 for countless hours. God I love her vicious sound too.

It's not your typical assault rifle because it shoots as fast as a shotgun, but i love the Saber in Mass Effect 3. Very powerful and accurate and the sound it makes is godlike. When you hear the sound, you know that bullet is gonna explode some heads.

ITT: A bunch of people posting SMG's, Machine Guns, and Sniper Rifles instead of Assault Rifles.
I don't know about the sniper rifles, but the thread's asking for ARs and MGs. With Half-Life 2's SMG in the OP, I thought SMGs were fine as well.

Also, my choices have already been listed; the AR33 and RC-P90 from GoldenEye 007.
