Soooooo. Goooood.

Mario Kart Wii local and online
Brawl local
Resident Evil 5 co-op
Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2
Mario Strikers Charged was fun for a while online too

This is tough to answer, some of the games I played 4+ years ago feel like 10 years ago and its hard to pit them against some of the newer games that are fresh in my mind. With that said:

Not in order

PGR3- I was a massive PGR2 fan and this game was somewhat disappointing yet I still logged in an obscene amount of hours into it. I had sold my other consoles to get a 360 and there wasn't much to play at this time, thank god for this game. I was transitioning between schools when this came out and had to wait until September to start the new college. Instead of getting a job like a smart person I just played this over and over. When racing got boring we played Cat and Mouse. When that got boring, we played "tag" by jumping over one of the barriers in the Japanese track and had the full course to roam around in. Endless fun.

Warhawk- Probably my favourite shooter MP game this gen. Again, not much to play on PS3 at this point but I actually played this one with a friend which is a lot more fun than playing strangers. CTF is too good in this game, incredibly balanced and so over the top. I'm dying for starhawk.

BFBC2 (beta)- for some reason I really enjoyed the beta, much more than the full game. Maybe I hated the new maps but the beta was a blast. Great sound and gunplay. Lots of room for improvement.

Starcraft II- My current go to MP game, I only play with a friend though. Probably not as enjoyable as the original, but great and different where it needs to be.

hPLzW.jpg

Uncharted 2- I regret selling this because I've had the itch to play it for months now. Coop is ridiculous and the MP was fun with friends.

I'm hoping GT5 is added to the list but so far I haven't played online too much. I also hope PD keeps adding to it and makes it better. COD4 was great fun for a while but now I despise it (almost lol).

Forza 3 is the better game, but Forza 2 is when the online community was at its best. You weren't even allowed to be in a lobby if you didn't have a headset on in most cases, which was brilliant, cuz it meant everybody was talking and discussing the race and whatever else. There were some annoying people, but for the most part, everybody had a similar respectable attitude about the racing.

Plus, the balance of the cars was better than in Forza 3, where AWD is pretty much mandatory if you want to be competitive.

Very close behind would be Call of Duty 4. I'd say Black Ops is a more balanced game, but CoD was never as fresh as it was with the first Modern Warfare and I will never ever forget that feeling of playing it.

Killzone 2 before the DLC packs. Times of glory.

Resistance 2 coop was a total blast, too. It was basically a horde mode with ~RPG progressions for multiple classes unlocking loadout options and perks along the way. Too bad they shelved that whole idea.

Left 4 Dead 1+2 using custom VS configs to make the game proper balanced.
Team Fortress 2 until more recently, though updates do get me back in the game for a bit.
Magicka which is a fucking masterpiece of co-op game design.
Modern Warfare 2 Spec-Ops was sick on Veteran and incredibly tense.

Nothing on 360 or PS3 comes to mind, especially 360 where I enjoyed so little multiplayer that I eventually stopped paying for Gold.

Halo 3- Just an amazing multiplayer experience and I loved spending hours shooting photos and capturing movies. 4-player co-op on legendary with some of the best AI in gaming today? Sure, sign me up. As a Halo nut this is definitely my online crescendo.

Gears of War 1- Was crazy to see that type of game in a multiplayer atmosphere. The characters and guns all felt larger then life and nothing beat chainsawing or curbstomping a dude whe they were down. Oh, and the game looks damn awesome. Online co-op made it a classic.

Definitely Uncharted 2 for online. The beta had some of my best moments of gaming.
Jumping over a rocket to kill someone in a rocket match was soooo satisfying, I'll never forget it :D
Dead Rising 2 is a close second.

As for local, I'm gonna have to go with Brawl.

As far as consoles go? Probably just Demon's Souls and Virtua Fighter 5 Online. Aside from those two games, just about every console game I've played online ended up irritating me in some way.

On the PC front? The Left 4 Dead games and Team Fortress 2 immediately come to mind. Minecraft is awesome, and I'm not sure if it counts, but EVE Online (Incursion) is incredible. I've only been playing it for six days. Its community is awesome and the game is insanely deep. I love it.

Left 4 Dead 1/2

Easily the king for multiplayer for this generation for me. 4-players against a neverending horde, playing this with 3 friends is a real joy. When I first played the 360 demo of L4D1, I knew it was something special when I was going along, this is kinda cool, then all of a sudden there is the adrenaline rush as the horde attacks; I never looked back after that.

Rock Band 1/2/Guitar Hero 2

These games absolutely defined the multiplayer at the Video Game Organization meetings and during some of our winter breaks and free time. Their rise and fall was perfectly placed during my undergrad (GH 2 released earlly freshman year), so they had a tremendous impact on us. You really felt like a rock star at times, and playing or competing with friends was such a new experience compared to shooters or fighters.

Killzone 2 - with a good squad, 20 players, no assault class was absolutely sublime.

Uncharted 2 - before they ruined it by dropping player health to cater to people who couldn't aim.

Bad Company 2 - Destroying buildings was so much fun.

BATTLEFIELD MOTHER EFFIN COMPANY TWO!

One of my all time favourite MP shooters was PDZ. The single player was average at best but online was insanely addictive. Its such a shame that it died after a year.

Burning Crusade: Arena was actually pretty damn good in Season 2 and 3, then it went down to shit and I will probably never again touch arena again.
NHL 10: Club games were fantastic, too bad playing defense in NHL 11 felt extremely unrewarding (at least when it was unpatched) However NHL 09/10/11 are all unbelievably fun in local multiplayer, some of the best mp gaming ever.
Starcraft 2: No explanation needed, if you think any other game from this generation is even close to being as good of a competitive MP you are wrong, it's that easy

Those are the ones that deserve the absolutely highest amount of praise, then of course there has been a lot of other great mp games.

Too bad there hasn't been a good competitive fps this generation.
Not competitive as in playing against eachother, but competitive as it being viable to play arranged matches
:/

For the most fun experience my vote would definitely go to supersonic aerobatic rocket powered battlecars. My friends and I would get high and hop online and play the shit out of this. You'd always end up getting paired with some weird kids in South America or something, and we'd just troll the shit out of them while tearing their shit up in some car-exploding stunt performing truck driving soccer game. Was tons of fun.

supersonicacrobatic_hero.jpg

My favorite FPS would have to go to KillZone 2. I don't think anything will surpass the joy I've had playing this online. The game in it's core is purely driven by skill, and when servers are tailored to that supreme mix of settings that allows for the most cohesive display of fine-tuned shooting mechanics as well as swift, teamwork based kill games I don't anything can match the experience you have.

Perfect Dark Zero (Dark Ops was the shit!)
Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (Enjoyed this long forgotten gem a lot more than the Bad Company series, strangely).
Gears of War (loved the intense, round based gameplay of OG Gears...the sequel failed by making too many unnecessary additions to a formula that was already damn near perfect).
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Multiplayer perfection...still the best game in the series).

I'm currently enjoying Black Ops, but the games listed above were some of the best experiences I've had this generation.

League of Legends(PC): I'm probably nearing my 500th hour, I have about 405 hours recorded, and I'm sure somewhere between 50-60 hours not recorded. It's basically a streamlined DOTA clone that actually makes the game a bit more competitive outside the first 10 minutes. Where comebacks are possible :P

MineCraft(PC) It's only in Beta and I've only logged onto the Gaf server a few times, but it's been fabulous to see this massive space completely built by Gaffers.

Killing Floor(PC) Coop survival at a budget price. It doesn't break any specific ground, but it has quite possibly the best community I've played with in a long time.

Shattered Horizons(PC) One of the most refreshing multiplayer experiences, pity its only active on free weekends.

Team Fortress 2(PC) As many others said, it's simple, fast pace, and the class base system works wonders.

Last gen hold outs that continue to impress too. WoW(PC) and EvE Online(PC)

If I had to pick a console game, I'd go with Lost Planet Colonies(X360,PC), solely for Akrid Hunter being one hell of a badass mode. Every time you enter into a Mecha to vs another Human playing Akrid. It's the end to Aliens all over again! I'd follow it up with Lost Planet 2(360). It had some of the most horrible design choices, but the coop was amazing.

HALO 3
4q0p6g.jpg

The absolute best online thing this gen for me.

Memories of Left 4 Dead 1&2 coop all night long with friends will forever be treasured too.

ODST/Reach
Coop modes and Bad Company 2 were quite something also.

Bad Company 2 is the only real next gen FPS imho. Destruction makes the others feel so obsolete. COD and Reach are nice and polished, but they don't add anything to the gameplay that couldn't be had last gen.

Also, L4D.

This plus your KZ3 hate make me question why you like BFBC2, it also has obscenely low player health, no? I die a shit ton before I even know I'm being shot at.

Halo 3 by far. I know Gaf doesn't really like Halo, but if you cant find something that you can enjoy on Halo 3 you just haven't looked hard enough. The game has served me well and has let me have really enjoyable experiences with friends no matter even if they are totally new to gaming/ are hardcore gamers with a competitive streak or are just interested in making stuff. The way the gameplay just 'felt' isn't going to be topped any time soon. I can still go on and have a blast sniping/ using a BR or just jumping in a Banshee and absolutely wrecking havoc.

Assassins Creed Brotherhood really surprised me by having a unique and fun multiplayer mode that takes me back to my days as a kid playing hide and seek lol. Same with Left 4 Dead.

CoD gets boring fast for me, but at its high its an absolute adrenaline rush. No one can deny that IW made some pretty brilliant changes to FPS shooters with Modern Warfare, and Treyarch have done well with Black Ops, which is a game im loving (on the whole) at the moment.

Gears of War 1;

Probably because this was the only thing I played for about 2 years, never put so much time into one game, played it online with my mates every night without fail. Was disappointed with 2 but still played it a fair bit before moving over to PS3, I know I'm going to have to return for 3 somehow though..

Demon's Souls;

Such a unique experience, nothing has come close to this, words cannot describe. Everyone needs to play this game at least once, just seeing other souls as you move through a level feels so, incredible. At the first time I got invaded, fuck, what an adrenaline rush!

Gears of War 1. I was seriously addicted to it for a long time. Then Gears of War 2 left a really bad taste in my mouth. My next would probably be NHL10/11. I know they are bug ridden but I love playing them.

My KZ3 hate comes from the utter dumbing down of the game, came in expecting much from the sequel and get a bad COD clone. BC2 has health between COD4 and UC2 (pre-1.05), which is fine. Low health is not a huge concern if the game has recoil and little autoaim. BC2 doesn't have any game breaking mechanics (UC2 with Situational Awareness/KZ3 with wallhack/disguise). It emphasizes teamwork, classes are well thought out, etc. I should go back to it.

Rock Band, so many hours upon hours of fun with my brother and sister playing this one.

Wii Sports, so many games of Bowling with the in-laws.

World of Warcraft, its an MMO yeah but I don't think I've put that many hours into one game before and have ever have been so addicted to one game.

I've played all the big FPS's this gen but, for me none of them stand head and shoulders above each other.

Uncharted 2 by far is my favourite multiplayer game. Can't wait for the next one!

However if I cast my mind way back to the start of this gen...

It was lagy as hell and buggy as hell, but my god it was fun! And even further back...

So much fun back in the day.

Rainbow Six Vegas and Perfect Dark Zero in case you were unaware

Until Starhawk hits, nothing else can satisfy me
I was just playing this in split-screen with my bro the other day. It's my favorite multiplayer experience this gen, with joy levels comparable to a good round of Block Fort in Mario Kart 64 back in the day, but with on-foot and jetpacks and jeeps and tanks and jets and more, hopping out of one and into another, bringing along teammates for the ride, across gorgeously colorful battlefields HUGE in scale and bursting at the seams with detail, 32 players going at it in every direction.

Sadly, after many years of strong community support, it seems the online userbase is dwindling. We're still always able to find a good game, but the options are slimming down. It's high time for Starhawk; once it's announced, it'll probably even boost Warhawk's numbers for awhile as people revisit it in anticipation. :)
