I'll second this.

For converting video to a sequence of images, I use a program called Super from eRightSoft. For authoring those images into a GIF, I use JASC Animation Shop. Super's freeware, and Animation Shop is so old, it probably is now too (was like $40 YEARS ago when I bought it).

Edit: VVV Yeah, but you provided the link. Also, going from video directly to GIF in Super doesn't really give you a lot of control.

I have no Gifs, but would like some pointers on what programs to use to capture and edit them.

The one i have been using for some time. Just download the movie and this one will convert it for you (you also have to cut the movie of course).
