Batman of course, but this guy's a close second:

Don't know much about super heroes and I've only seen the movie, but I really liked Dr. Manhattan.

The way he loses, through his seemingly infinite power, his connection to being a human was quite fascinating.

Not enough Booster gold love in this thread.

The only people on this planet that don't adore Booster Gold are those who haven't read 52.

What I loved most about the issue that focuses on him, is that at the end, you can't blame him for losing his connection to humanity. You can't imagine NOT ending up like him with the same experiences.

Kitty Pryde. It's somewhat rare to have a well-known superhero whose only power is largely defensive. She doesn't have super strength, can't fly and is about as squishy as your average human, but she's one of the strongest members of the X-Men based on her strength of character, quick wits and ingenious usage of her one power. It's too bad that Marvel retconned her amazing send-off a few years back, only to make her a piece of background art.

captain_america_flag-thumb-550x347-33228.jpg

Captain America. It wasn't until Civil War that I actually paid attention and understood the appeal of Captain America. He isn't just some hokey figure of patriotism. He's Steve Fucking Rogers, ultimate frisbee wielding bad-ass. It isn't about "America, fuck yeah!" but about the best that America can produce as a force of good. Which in turn, I guess, makes it about patriotism. Bucky sucks.

Definitely Spider-man. I used to read his comics when I was younger and loved it. I'm kind of revisiting my youth at the moment and reading old Spider-man comics, but I find I am starting to hate how the storylines are split between Amazing Spider-man, Spectacular Spider-man, and Web of Spider-man. However, I really enjoyed "Kraven's Last Hunt" and am now at the part where Spider-man gets all this powers that make him super powerful. This always bothered me cause I knew I read about this happening to him, but I wasn't sure how he got those powers until now.

He'll always be my favorite. My favorite thing about him is the smell of brimstone he leaves behind when he bamfs. Always loved him for his swashbuckler nature.

Honorable mention is Psylocke.

Nightcrawler is probably my favorite Marvel hero.

OP nailed it, i'm with you there brother

I was beginning to think that I was the only one. I think the first time I really got into DD and appreciated his character was when I read Kevin Smith's Guardian Devil arc. Then I read most of the Bendis/Maleev stuff, and I was blown away by how the book was heads and shoulders above any other superhero book on the shelves. It just tried so many real world things and treated the character with maturity and respect, not reducing him to a typical caricature.

Jesus is my favorite superhero.

I'm serious.

He can turn water into wine, control weather, save us from our sins, etc man that's friggin' awesome.

I wish Jesus had saved me from my situation though :(

Dude there are a lot of us here who are fans of the Man Without Fear

Ya know what's sad? I used to be fans of The Sentry in Marvel, and Roy Harper (speedy/Arsenal/Red Arrow) in DC, but with the two books they just did for these characters they may have very well DESTROYED any love I had for the characters.

Fallen Sun and The Rise and Fall of Arsenal are terrible. I wish my niche loves wouldn't suffer so unjustly...

My wife doesn't even really read comics and loves Booster Gold. He's a pretty awesome character.

My favorite is Green Lantern, Hal Jordan style.

Something bad happened in the Early 80s-- Hal went from one of thousands of amazing GLs to "the Greatest GL of all!" which really weakened the concept and the character, IMHO.

Also, I always loved the contrast between a guy who ought to be on top of the world, and yet had a streak of insecurity in him. I like the revival, but they've made Hal out to be a bit too much Alpha Male and less of an introspective character. The overall sci-fi world and larger story is great though, so I'll forgive them. They've also established a whole host of interesting GLs who also shine, which returns the "one amazing guy among many" motif that had been lost.

Oh, and also <3 Gil Kane's design for the character:

For some reason when I was a kid I was impressed by Captain Marvel (the Marvel one, not the DC - Shazam - one). I thought that the way he transformed by hitting his gauntlets was cool. I liked Cyclops too, don't remember why.

That transformation was Roy Thomas' way of making him like the original (now at DC) version, with Rick Jones = Billy Batson.

The original is one of favorites as well, though I like him better when Cap was actually a grown up, not a kid in a grown-up's body.

More Gil Kane love in that pic-- the guy did awesome costume designs.

This thread makes me want to start reading about superheroes I have never known before.

My favorites: Superman, Batman, and Spider-man

I really want to read some Flash and Green Lantern, but don't want to follow a weekly series or anything. Any paperback volumes I should pick up?

I already have Flash: Terminal Velocity

I'm going to have to save that pic for the next time I hear somebody complain that they're tearing down Kyle to make Hal look good. Karma, bitches.

Batman will always be my favorite. Even when I was heavily entrenched in the Marvel Universe during gradeschool and junior high, he was still my favorite.

On the DC Universe side, sans Batman:

the-flash.jpg

Super-speed is awesome, but I always loved the non-conventional ways he utilized it. I also love the personality of The Flash. Such a fun loving character.

MartianManhunter_5647.jpg

The swiss army knife of the Justice League. Flight, super strength, telepathy, ability to become intangible and pass through solid surfaces, shape shifting, incredibly smart, and a brilliant tactician. Couple that with his tragic past and his drive to do good and make up for the fact that he couldn't save his family, and he becomes a fairly deep character when you breach his serious persona.

Marvel Universe:

Getting the "obligatories" out of the way, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Spider-Man, Deadpool. Everybody knows why these characters are awesome. Now for some slightly lesser unknown superheroes.

Shatterstar

When I was growing up, he was one of my favorites. He had traits of Wolverine and Deadpool, but was incredibly smart and could turn soundwaves into energy.

Nate Grey (X-Man)

1254144734461_fnategreydxm3.jpg

I started getting into the X-Man comics right before I stopped buying them, but I always thought his story was interesting, something that was heightened by the fact that he was one of the most powerful mutants on the planet. Essentially Cable if he wasn't hindered by the virus that was ravaging his body.

Jubilee

marvel-encyclopedia-jubilee-1-100k.jpg

I'm probably going to get some ire for this, but I've always had a soft spot for Jubilee. Not the Jubilee from the animated show, but the ones from the comics. I liked the fact that she started off being this joke of a mutant with "firework" powers and ended up being absurdly powerful. I haven't followed comics for awhile, but it seems that she's a vampire now? Weird.

Billy fucking Butcher from The Boys.

Though, he's not a superhero per se, I think. Since he kills superheroes. But he IS A SUPERHERO TO ME!

You like Rorschach?

Not as a human being no. But as a superhero, hell yeah. He's so tormented, had a traumatic youth as a child and he is so repulsive as well.

As as superhero though i think he's awesome. Doesn't know mercy, excels at improvising in battle (the scene with the cops in Moloch's house in the comics shows) and he's very tactical in the way he fights. Rorschach is plain awesome.

My all-time favorite hero. I might still have a pic around when I dressed as him for Halloween when I was a kid. ;) I know he may not be the most powerful hero around but that's something I think that attracts me to the character. Also how he has to juggle his social life with his responsibility of being Spiderman.

Having said that, there are some other heroes that are also favorites of mine....

Daredevil- One of the most unique, imo, heroes around. A blind superhero. Also love the fact that he doesn't have real superpowers besides his other senses being superhuman. Similar to Batman, he worked his body into peak physical shape and is a deadly fighter. Something else that's really cool is how he uses his city as a playground and how he traverses it.

Ghost Rider- This character has such a cool, unique look. He rides a motorcycle made with fire, bad-ass!

Iron Man- Similar to Batman, a self made hero. I love Iron Man's armor, one of the most recognizable outfits around. I also dig the fact Tony Stark's a bit of a drunk, lol!

Silver Surfer- One of the most powerful heroes around. As strong as the Hulk, has the power to destroy a planet, can travel through space, into black holes. And his surfboard is pretty much indestructible.

I almost put him down but I couldn't get past the non-superhero bit.
