Your least favorite GAF Game of the Year?

Last of Us is easily my least favorite and I would probably say it is a bad game but I gave up like half way through the game because I was so bored by it. The Wonderful 101 was easily pick of the year.

Was Twilight Princess the Wii or the GC version?

MGS4 was just abysmal, Mass Effect 2 was terribly disappointing but not just a torture session if you don't skip 80% of the game like MGS4 was. That's the only game I consider bad on the list, even if I don't necessarily think some were game of the year they're all at least worth trying except MGS4.

2004- Metal Gear Solid 3 <-- haven't played the game because I hate 1 & 2
2005- Resident Evil 4 <-- good game, not my GotY (I think not even in my top ten), but fun.
2006- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess <-- My GotY 2006
2007- Super Mario Galaxy <-- My GotY 2007
2008- Metal Gear Solid 4 <-- same as MGS3
2009- Uncharted 2 <-- horrible game imo.
2010- Mass Effect 2 <-- horrible game imo
2011- Portal 2 <-- great, great game. Not my GotY (that'd be Zelda SS), but a great choice anyway.
2012- Journey <-- haven't played the game. Very unlikely that I'd like it (gameplay > * guy here)
2013- The Last of Us <-- haven't played the game. I hate Uncharted and don't really care for anything but gameplay, so very unlikely it'd be near my GotY-toplist.
2014- Bayonetta 2 <-- not my GotY, but fantastic game, best of its kind.

So, Mass Effect 2 or Uncharted 2, with outside chances for MGS3, MGS4, Journey and Last of Us.

I've played all of the GoTY winners and Journey sticks out to me as maybe being odd company for the other heavyweights in those lists. However, 2012 was such a forgettable year and that game remained as one of the most memorable ones so I have no problem with it.

I think the lowest would either be MGS4 or Twilight Princess for me. I enjoyed both games thoroughly when they released, but they have dropped considerably upon reflection. Then again, I don't remember what other games came out in those years so I might still put them in the top spot for their respective years.

i've played only a handful of them, none of which i thought were great. huh, interesting. thanks for posting.

I've only played 5 of the games on that list. Which really isn't much. I should probably fix that, but I can't be bothered.

I liked Journey but it's not GOTY material, not by any means. The Last of Us was alright, only playing it recently, but there's other games I'd put above it, not that 2013 was a spectacular year. I can understand why Naughty Dog fans and could put it so high, I don't think the game will age very well, though. Portal 2 is a very good game but 2011 was a very good year for games, it's stupid how Portal 2 got GOTY, but not Portal 1. For 2011 I would have picked Dark Souls, no doubt at all. (Except I wouldn't have played it at that time.)

Why wasn't 2010 Super Mario Galaxy 2? SMH. Which is weird, I often see people nowadays name that or Red Dead, which both launched in 2010, as one of the games of the generation. It's pretty obvious that GOTY awards can be blinded by hype.

Mario Galaxy is great, I would have picked Portal over it, but that's some tough competition so I can understand. I like Twilight Princess, but surely a better game than that came out in 2006?

Well, I played all previous GOTY's and loved them. I do not think I will ever play Bayonetta 2 though, as I am not really fond of the first one (personal preferences, I have no problems with it's quality). But calling it my least favourite without even playing it once is a bit unfair, so I´ll say it interests me the least.

From the ones I played I think either Twilight Princess or Portal 2. Allthough I still really liked them.

Of the list these are the ones that I consider to be classics (top 25 of all time material for me): MGS3, RE4, SMG, UC2 and TLOU.

2008- Metal Gear Solid 4
2009- Uncharted 2
2013- The Last of Us
2014- Bayonetta 2

Never played TLOU or Bayonetta 2, nor do I want to. I have played MGS4 and Uncharted 2, and I have no desire to ever play them again. If I had to choose my least favorite, I would have to stick to games I actually played, so Uncharted 2 is my choice.

2004- Metal Gear Solid 3

My pick from 2004 was Half-Life 2, but MGS3 was a very close 3rd behind that and Metroid Prime 2. It's my favorite Metal Gear game, and certainly was deserving of GOTY, so I have no problem with that choice.

2005- Resident Evil 4

No-brainer. RE4 is my 2005 GOTY and was far and away the best game released that year.

2006- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

I have plenty of gripes with this game, but it was ultimately my GOTY that year as well. 2006 was a weak year for games overall, it was very transitional, and it's why a really good game that had plenty of flaws was able to win.

2007- Super Mario Galaxy

Another no-brainer. My game of the generation.

2008- Metal Gear Solid 4

First real disagreement. MGS4 wouldn't have even made my Top 10 that year, I found it to be incredibly disappointing. 2008 didn't have a stand-out game for me (Dead Space was my Game of the Year pick), but I preferred such games as Brawl, GTA IV, Mirror's Edge, and DMC4 to MGS4.

2009- Uncharted 2

I went Arkham Asylum by the slimmest of margins, but it was pretty much a coin flip as I really liked both games a ton, so I have no qualms at all about Uncharted 2.

2010- Mass Effect 2

Second disagreement, not because I didn't like Mass Effect 2, but because it came out the same year as Super Mario Galaxy 2, Red Dead, Bayonetta, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Deadly Premonition, and a few other games I preferred to it.

2011- Portal 2

My 2011 game of the year by a wide margin over everything else. Once again, completely in agreement.

2012- Journey

I don't like this selection. Even though it made my Top 10, and even though it was a really weak year for games, Journey was a nice novelty for me but there were better games. Walking Dead, Mark of the Ninja, ZombiU, Dishonored and Far Cry 3 would have all been more deserving.

2013- The Last of Us

My Top 3 games were Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, The Last of Us, and Super Mario 3D World, and I spent hours trying to order them because I loved all three just about equally. I ended up going with Zelda at 1 and Last of Us at 2, but it's still in my Top 3 games of the last generation, so a very well-deserved winner.

2014- Bayonetta 2

Like The Last of Us, Bayonetta 2 was my personal runner-up, so I have no problem at all with it winning. It's a hell of a game.

So, I had the same GOTY as GAF four times, and had the GAF GOTY in my Top 3 four times (3 times as runner-up).

I have three disagreements, and my least-favorite is definitely Metal Gear Solid 4 because I don't really consider it to be a good game in general.

Mass Effect 2 and Journey. Mass Effect 2 is especially bad since there were so many other amazing games that year, SMG2, RDR, Bayonetta, DKCR, Vanquish, MGS:PW & Nier.

I actually like most of them, obviously there are some I haven't played.

I'd choose Portal 2 or MGS4 out of that list if I have to, MGS4 was alright but I really dislike the plot and it just felt lacking, I don't view Portal 2 as negatively but I think the game felt dragged at some point. There are certainly more complaints for mgs4 from me more than most of those games on the list.

Hm! Excluding games I've not played, obviously... (ranked best to worst)

2007- Super Mario Galaxy
2012- Journey
2011- Portal 2
2006- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Metal Gear Solid 3. Never been an MGS fan, but this one is the best of the worst of what I've played (1,2,3,PW). The characters are all so stupid, the story is all over the place, Snake feels weird to control, could never figure out how to do basic melee combat. Ugh. Didn't enjoy my time with it at all, yet somehow pushed myself to finish it which is probably why I consider it the best.

Of that list (with Twilight Princess and Bayonetta 2 being the only ones I haven't played) definitely Journey, it's the kind of game where it depends on being emotionally resonant with the player to work, and I can't say I ever established that connection.

Bayo 2 aside I have played and loved every one of those games, MGS4 would probably be the weakest though (Dead Space was by far the best game released in 2008). Twilight Princess would be a close second, it was good but it felt too much like a retread of OoT.

I wonder if Kotor would have been no. 1 if there had been a thread in 2003.

The Last of Us.

I can't bring myself to playing through more than the beginnings of the game. Too much like The Walking Dead style making a zombified world seem real and effecting the player.

I really don't care how cinematic it wants to be when I have movies and television that do a better job of explaining story.

2004- Metal Gear Solid 3
2005- Resident Evil 4
2006- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
2007- Super Mario Galaxy

2008- Metal Gear Solid 4
2009- Uncharted 2
2010- Mass Effect 2
2011- Portal 2
2012- Journey
2013- The Last of Us
2014- Bayonetta 2

underline = underwhelming
bold = master piece.

Mario Galaxy 2 losing against Mass Effect 2 is grade A bullshit.
i don't know how that happened, i hope we learned from our mistakes.

Portal 2, Mass Effect 2, and Zelda: TP are all mediocre entries compared to the previous game/other games in their series.

So I guess those. None of those games are bad though.

Journey. To play the game the way it was meant to be requires playing online with someone randomly. That's just not something I'm interested in.
I've never played it online, but it was certainly my favorite game that year as well. Second favorite of the generation, in fact.

Journey. So boring and shallow. Although I have to admit that I am not a fan of "no/minimal gameplay" games and at least it seems Journey is one of the less pretentious titles in this genre, which is a plus.

The MGS4 hate is so baffling to me. MGS4 has by far the best gameplay of any of the Metal Gear games, and it's an entire generation defining game for me.

Of the ones I've actually put a good amount of time into, I guess I'd have to say Metal Gear Solid 3 was the worst. The gameplay in that one just really doesn't work. That said, I still like the game.

Of the ones I haven't put much into or haven't played at all, I'd probably say Journey or Mario Galaxy are the ones I have least desire to play.

Twilight princess, easily. I Couldn't even be bothered to finish that game and I was on the last dungeon.

It was funny because before wind waker was released it looked terrible and twilight looked like it was going to be the perfect zelda game, but the reverse happened.

Chapter 1&2 were good, gone downhill afterwards, bad boss fights and one of the worst stories in a videogame, ruined all the lore of the series, so disappointing, MGSV has a lot to make up for, just wish MGS4 was never created.

Holy shit I didn't know Journey won in 2012, sure it was a cool experience, very pretty and whatnot, but it was hardly even a game. GAF really dropped the ball on that one.

I agree with pretty much all the others I've played, screw the MGS4 haters.

I haven't played Bayonetta 2 or Journey yet, so I'm tempted to say Journey just because I don't have an interest in ever playing it, while I plan to pick up Bayonetta 2 since I loved the first one a lot.

However, if I have to pick a least favorite out of all the ones I've played, I'd probably have to go with The Last of Us. I know, I know, it's GAF's critical darling, but I honestly prefer the pulp of the Uncharted series and the game just didn't click (ha ha!) for me the way it did for other people. I'm much more likely to replay and enjoy all the other titles I've played than TLoU, so. But for clarification, I don't think it's a bad game. I just didn't find it balls-amazing, GOTY-worthy.

For full ranking's sake:
Uncharted 2 > Metal Gear Solid 3 > Portal 2 > Resident Evil 4 > Twilight Princess > Mass Effect 2 > Super Mario Galaxy > Metal Gear Solid 4 > The Last of Us

If I had to guess, I'll probably end up putting Bayonetta 2 either before or after Portal 2, but who knows.

I have only played two of those, but I will say that even as someone who likes Twilight Princess, I don't think it deserved the spot. It is too flawed as a whole coherent package, even if it is a fun game in many aspects.

Last of Us for sure.

ME2 was disappointing but still brilliant, I've not played Journey because I know I wouldn't like it, MGS3 is irritating but 2004 was a long ass time ago, and I've not finished Bayo 2 yet.

I consider the rest to be worthy winners without much doubt. Especially glorious MGS4.
