Your least favorite GAF Game of the Year?

Metal Gear Solid 4.

Like I know that 2008 was a weakass year, but c'mon. c'mon.

edit: Portal 2 is a close second. Like Portal 1, Portal 2 left me feeling like it was poorly paced for a puzzle game.

Bayonetta 2 quite easily. Liked or loved all the others that I played (Zelda, SMG, RE4, ME2), but Bayo 2 just didn't click with me at all despite anxiously waiting for it (and despite loving TW101 and MGR).

Nah man. I seriously Dont.
Deep learning. When you play it at first you suck but you slowly learn how to fight and you keep getting better all the time. Then eventually you become this godly player who hears and sees and understands everything in the game (the enemies and their patterns and what you need to do to beat them the best way and such) - though with Platinum games that'd take a looot of time because the systems can be so deep.

The main point about it is that it's hard but all the more rewarding. Really shouldn't be that hard to understand even though obviously some people don't care about such.

Journey is by no means a poor game, but a PSN digital exclusive doesn't strike me as GOTY material.
How does that matter at all that it's a PSN digital exclusive?

Out of all of these, probably Mass Effect 2. It's cool and all, but I'm not all that fond of it.
RDR/SMG2/Bayonetta was the true 2010 GOTY.

Definitely MGS3 and MGS4. I just don't get it. Aside from production, Kojima is severely overrated. The storylines are convoluted, the characters are beyond ridiculous...I just dont' get the love for the series at all.

Bayonetta 2. I just don't like anything about it really. The story's not interesting to me, the combat gets very repetitive (I don't care for DMC either), and it just feels like people blindly praise it because Nintendo saved it.

Isn't everyone in this thread being contrarian?

Nah man just me because uh... I Dont like a game that sells so horribly Nintendo had to produce the game since the rights holder didn't want to bother.

Just the persecution complex at its finest.

I understand what you are saying but having played them I didn't get that feel at all and felt absolutely no desire to return to that. I'm really happy that I didn't give into the hype of the first game by buying it (just borrowed it) because I would have been more than annoyed. That's one of the few times I would have felt justified in a return (but since I wouldn't get one I'd probably just send it back to Kamiya with a note lol).

That seems really silly, no offense. The first is one of the most highly rated games in its genre.

The combat is repetitive only if you play it superficially anyway.

MGS3 isn't convoluted at all. Plot wise double crosses happened, a triple cross, money was taken by the US government, that's about it. MGS3 is more goofy and silly than convoluted.

I haven't played Bayo2, ME2 or Journey. Out of what I have played the least favourite is probably Portal 2. I like it alright but it didn't have nearly the impact of the first one which I like much more despite there being sound argument 2 is better.

Then again the vanilla MGS3 of 2004 is not exactly that great either with the horrible camera... Now many things it does are obviously superior to MGS4 but if you were almost life long fan of the series 4 which certainly has big flaws just was such an epic.

Definitely Mass Effect 2 for me. Aside from recruiting characters there was almost no plot. The story was one of my favourite things about ME1, so I thought ME2 was a huge let-down.

Yeah I can see that. Not everyone gets those feelings obviously and not everyone likes the game.

But call it horrible and rotten garbage because of that?

It is really silly, but I know a few people who do. They didn't care in the slightest about the IP when it was on 360 or PS3, but when it's coming to Wii U, suddenly it's hype city and anyone who's not onboard is butthurt it's not coming to their favorite system.

the first one was diffidently praised a lot here on neogaf, and was much better then bayonetta 2 for its time, was on a way bigger install base and only got number 4 on the goty lists, the main reason it won goty here cause it was exclusive. exlusives games will always get way more votes, yes the reality is there are tons on console warriors that won't admit, same thing goes for sony exclusives.

that makes no sense. in the year bayonetta 1 didn't win goty, it was a multiplatform game at the top of the list.

Hey man that's just my opinion. I see no value whatsoever in the game/series.

I at least thank you for not being outright rude and hostile because I like different games unlike some of the other fans :)

Bayonetta 2, by far.

All of you saying Portal 2 are horrible people. Every single one of you.

Never played the Co-op (the Campaign killed my enthusiasm), but unless it's 20 times better than the single player, then I have no refers saying Portal 2. As poorly paced and slow as Twilight Princess was, at least it had a few gameplay highlights. All the highlights in Portal 2's campaign were just some clever lines from Wheatley and those malfunctioning robots.

I noticed there hasn't been a multiplatform gaf goty since 2011, and seeing the games for this year, I can see either Bloodborne, Uncharted 4, or Zelda/Xenoblade, nintendo/sony exclusive games winning 2015 goty, but that's just my prediction.

The story is the main reason I prefer ME2 over the first one by a mile. I find it far more interesting to do great quests with your squad mates than stopping another generic evil villain.

Eh? did you get it cheap or for free? Otherwise it seems a bit odd to buy a game that had no appealing qualities to you.

Journey, despite voting for it in 2012. It's just not a game that you can really go back to again and have the same kind of experience. Still, it was pretty amazing at the time.

Metal Gear 4. Terrible damn game.

I played it about 12 times so far and I get the same great experience each time. In fact I'd say the first 5 or 6 times my experience got better because I was learning more about what the game was about and how the multiplayer was actually working.

from that list the only ones i havent played are ME2 and Journey. I never picked up ME2 on the recomendation from a friend who was a diehard worshipper of ME1 who said that it killed every thing that made the 1st one good.

Of the ones i played i would say either portal 2 or last of us. portal 2 was fun but to me it felt like it was just new levels to the original portal with more dialogue thrown in.

LoU was kind of a letdown for me since it gets so much praise here. I thought it was decent but tbh i enjoyed the uncharted games more

2004- Metal Gear Solid 3
2005- Resident Evil 4
2006- The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
2007- Super Mario Galaxy

2008- Metal Gear Solid 4
2009- Uncharted 2
2010- Mass Effect 2
2011- Portal 2
2012- Journey
2013- The Last of Us
2014- Bayonetta 2

Bolded games are games I've played and beaten (Portal 2 and Uncharted 2 being unfinished). I can't say I'm disappointed with any of them. If I had to chose my least favorite, I'd pick Twilight Princess

Toss up between Journey and The Last of Us. I thought Journey was interesting and really beautiful, but it's not game of the year caliber to me. I won't even go into The Last of Us but I realize I'm in an extreme minority on that one, so it's alright.

Portal 2 would be the runner-up, but it's far better than the ones I mentioned.

IIRC, Portal 2 was an interesting case where it wasn't No. 1 for a lot of people, but it was so high up on most lists that its combined point total still secured it GOTY

I'd be really curious to see what would happen with a re-vote for 2010 similar to how there was a re-vote for 2008. ME2 isn't my least favorite game out of the GAF winners, but it is the most surprising for me given what else was in 2010.

I liked Portal 2 a lot. I thought it sagged a bit in the middle but it was still a massive upgrade over the first game. Stephen Merchant's voice and inane chitchat for the dopey sidekick Wheatley was perfect.

I fucking loved all of those games that I played (need a Wii U for Bayo 2) and the majority of them were my GoTY for their respective years, or at least very close to it.

Yeah, I thought Portal 2 was great. The only (potential) problem with it is sometimes the puzzles could wreck the pacing, but YMMV. I got stuck on one or two for a while, before finally noticing the key to the way forward.

This is true. I mean if anyone doubts this just look at this years winners.

Oh man, and here I was thinking I was just voting for the games I liked the most. Seems I need to get my head checked, I have an agenda and am not even aware of it. Thanks for bringing this to my attention guys, it's very clear that I have some serious mental issues going on here.

Well, it did get game of the year the same year that the game of the generation was released.
Not denying Dark Souls qualities but the massive downgrade it went through surely didn t help and understandably so.

MGS4 stands out the most relative to other games released that year, but I still have to go with Journey.

Those are the only two years I really have any issues with, the rest even if I don't agree I can atleast understand and generally like the games.
