Your tales of embarrassment

I did too, it was an awesome experience... I love that game.

Was all the grinding to get the hard trophies really that awesome? I put 70 hours into FFXIII and enjoyed it, but I only got half the trophies (as a percentage).

Fun thread!

I got stuck in the Water Temple (Loz: OoT) for almost 2 solid weeks, but it wasn't because of anything like raising / lowering the water level. It was because I'm an idiot. After beating shadow Link I spun around and ran out of the room with my shiny new Longshot. I then spent the next 2 weeks going to each room on the map and checking every square inch for anything to help me advance in the dungeon. I even drew a real rough map by hand in order to check off rooms as I went. Each time I looked at the thing I would look right at Shadow Link's room and think "Nah, can't be anything there. That's where I got the Longshot." Needless to say, I checked that room very very last. I have no idea how I missed a Block of Time right behind the treasure chest. I still hate the water temple to this day not because it's confusing, but because I'm a huge idiot and it reminds me each time I play it.

Another good one was when I thought that sitting down in World of Warcraft (Vanilla Version) helped you regen mana faster, when in reality it was just the "5-second rule" (mana regen is very limited when casting and up to 5 seconds after casting your last spell. If you don't cast anything for 5 seconds your regen goes up significantly). This all came to a head when I first did Molten Core with a guild I wanted to join and got laughed at pretty good when I got AoE Crit (because I was sitting) on a boss. At least I didn't think Prayer of Healing healed the entire raid....right?

Half-Life: I had never played an FPS other then Wolfenstein and Doom before I got my hands on Half-Life, meaning that I had never played anything with mouse-look. I shit you not, it took me FOREVER to figure out that you could move your view with the mouse. Also, I had never played a game that had a "Use" key. Wolfenstein had just trained me to use Spacebar (which was now jump.... I can jump! Holy shit!) which meant it also took me forever to get your Lambda suit the first time because I didn't know you could "use" the button to unlock the glass guarding it. I just kept looking for things in the world that I could use to break the glass with. Things went much better from there though, I promise.

I'm sure there are many, many more, but those are the ones that jump out to me.

I got stuck in Breath of Fire I or II (I don't remember) for like two days because I couldn't figure out how to get past a gate or something. It turns out there was another route a few steps back that I just didn't see for some stupid reason. It wasn't hidden. I just... didn't see it. >_>

Took me about a week to get used to the controls in Goldeneye 007 for the N64. Oh, and also in Pokémon Blue, I had no idea the rug in the first house showed that there was a door there. Must have spent an hour in that house.

Back in the days of Pokemon Blue/Red and the MissingNo glitch, I would get infinite rare candies and master balls and have to level 99 all my Pokemon even though I never used more than 10 pokemon in that game.

I got so OCD in that game...I don't know why.

Oh and in Gold/Silver I got all the Unown derivatives (i think there was 28 of them). No reason to have them, but I got them.

I got stuck in the basement of South Figaro in FF3 for SNES right after you get Celes with Locke. I didn't see that you could move down.

After hearing such good things about Braid I decided to download the trial, couldn't beat the first little trial-y bit (getting all of the puzzle pieces or whatever) so I got rid. A few months, maybe a year later I downloading it again because I thought "maybe I was just being really dumb then".

If it makes you feel better you probably missed the really stupid ones that have nothing to do with the game mechanics introduced in the level

I called up the Nintendo Support Hotline the day I got GoldenEye 007 because I couldn't work out how to get past the first truck gate in Dam.

I didnt know there was a 'use' button.

When it came out, I played through the entirety of Gears of War on Casual without once using active reload. It wasn't that I did it for the challenge (it was on casual after all), but because I jumped straight into the game and never bothered learning the trick. Never even accidentally hit the reload button a second time to figure out that there was more to the reload mechanic than most other games had ever bothered to implement.

@ x Power Pad Death Stomp x

Maybe one of these days you could pick it up and play the campaign online co-op on casual. I'm nearly finished with my Insane run (**** you RAAM!) and it would be sweet revenge to go through the whole thing obliterating the Locust for once. Should only take 5-8 hours.

Dude, no shame. Little Mermaid was pretty boss. Practically all of the Capcom Disney games on NES were great, actually.

They had that same puzzle in Trace Memory, and I searched basically every inch of the game for like four hours trying to figure out what to do next. I didn't have internet access at the time.
Wasn't that in Hotel Dusk? I only solved when I gave up and put my DS to sleep.
(In Trace Memory I puzzle that required "blowing" is what stopped me :( ).

My online record in Street Fighter IV is approximately 1-30 after being destroyed by approximately 30 different people being Ken. So I only play it with friends now...

A few weeks ago I hopped on HALO Reach, went into the classic playlist, got into a match and ended up going like 0-15. I even received hate mail from a teammate.

Somehow my two biggest gaming shames are Resident Evil related.

I played through Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, and Resident Evil 3 without incident.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica comes along and I get to the end. It asks me for the self destruct code. I draw a blank. I try "Ashford", "self destruct", "password", "t-virus", "zombie", whatever I can think of and none of it is right. Then I look at the box and remember the fucking game is called CODE VERONICA.

Somehow I played Resident Evil 4 without realizing there is a run button until I played as Ashley. I just put up with how slow Leon was moving without questioning it, even though I ran all the time in the other RE games.

FRAPS. Shame period from 2010 to 22/5/2011

As many other people, I use it to check my FPS while playing, especially Crysis.

For the longest time I have thought Crysis or my pc was being weird, everytime I died and reloaded the FPS counter would dive into the low 20s or high tens for some time. The counter was red during this time, which I thought indicated unplayable frame rates. I chalked it up to some loading problem or engine quirk.

Seemingly unrelated, my HDD was awfully full for the amount of games installed.

Yesterday during TW2 I looked if quickloading was still in, because it takes a fuckton of time to get into menu after pressing escape (really, is that the case for anyone else?). It isn´t, but hitting F9 turned the FPS counter red. Hitting it again made it yellow again.

I had a "wait a minute" moment, tabbed out of the game, checked the FRAPS videp option for the first time ever and saw that F9, aka quickload button, is the start recording hotkey. Derp. Changed it to F8.

I had 90 Crysis vids at up to 1 gig each, 63 gigs of wasted space all in all. Ouch. Luckily the free version only allows for 30 sec videos or my HDD would´ve been full during my first Crysis session.

Deleted them and started playing around with recording TW2 vids.

You and me, aMN.

We're brothers.

Up to this day, I STILL haven't finished the original Super Mario Brothers game for the NES.

For some reason I found the last stage very difficult and I refuse to use save-states in an emulator as a matter of foolish pride :(

O_O

Makes me wonder how can you survive the "AAARGHH RUN AWAY!" parts before the ringing of the church bells in the village O_O

There was a room in Ocarina of Time in the Shadow Temple where I was stuck for 3 months. You had to get all silver rupees, and there were zombies and invisible spikes.I couldn't get all rupees, until I noticed that there is this thing you can shoot your hookshot at which is completely invisible unless you use the Lens of Truth.

Oh,and I can't beat any level from the Marathon Triology.I have no problems with FPS,but this game completely freaks me out.Really,I'm too afraid to play through a game made in 1994.Thankfully,the triology is freeware anyway.I wonder if Bungie's other triology,Halo, also give me the creeps.

On my first play through of Final Fantasy VI I remember getting stuck in Zozo for ages. I though I was missing something in the north house so I spent ages exploring there before realizing there was another house to the south. To make matters worse, I got stuck their again while trying to climb the building as I never saw that you could jump between the towers. :( I only solved it bu accident by pressing up and left on the d-pad in rage and I found myself on the opposite building.

I have never fully beaten a Final Fantasy game :[ I've only watched my brothers beat them, and gotten about half way through some of them myself.

haahahahaha

Thanks for the laugh. This is totally something I could see myself doing.

One of my biggest personal embarrassments: I've never personally beaten MGS1. Played it a million times, but I've only seen then ending because my brother did a marathon session one night years ago.

Goodness, that reminds me... During one of my playthroughs, I did the glitch to get extra bottles, which replaced an item that you already had (I believe), and accidentally replaced my Lens of Truth with one. There was a lot of blind luck involved to pass the Shadow Temple without it, especially at one of the sections where the floor is invisible and 90% of it is a pitfall.

One other thing that comes to mind is not so much a tale of embarrassment, but one of pure annoyance. Near the end of God of War, you find Pandora's Box and you open it... Well, when I arrived in the room, it was not there. I think I pulled something and there was a cutscene, and then I was left with an empty room. I thought Kratos has been set-up, but nothing ever happened...so because of that, I've never beaten GoW. :( Apparently, the final boss is practically right after. AAARRRRGHHH

I bought Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee on Gamecube.

I once returned my console to a store because I thought the game I had was freezing. I just needed to press start.

The first time I played through Terranigma ( was a young teen in a non-english country ) I somehow missed the fact that at the chinese castle you had to push a button ( hidden by the view ) to open a secret passage.
Took me months to pass that point ( that was way before I had access to internet, around 1997 ).

Everything in Twilight Princess baffled me on Gamecube and it's baffling me on Wii as well - I just picked up the budget re-release. I just can't figure anything out.

I'm hoping I can charge through with a FAQ and hopefully understand the logic, but considering how I made it two minutes into Machinarium before I couldn't get the puzzles, perhaps adventure game puzzles aren't for me.

I'm with you, the game has some of the best puzzles! No respect for the game whatsoever. The game has so much puzzles that are way better than that of windwaker.

Are we really comparing Zelda puzzles to Machinarium puzzles?

Metroid Prime. In the Phazon mine, there's a huge passage between saves. Needles to say, after much fustration, I look up ignguides to work out you need to use the Super Missile!!!
I also cheated a bit, by raising the platforms first and trackbacking to save station.

Getting an Atari 2600 for Christmas and upon opening with my family watching I honestly didn't know what it was lol, I never even knew what a games console was before that day tbh.

I got all the way to the last boss in FFVII without working out what the 'All' materia did. Didn't beat it until 3 years later.

:/

I was too stupid to progress much further than the second dungeon in Majora's Mask because, for the life of me, I couldn't manage my time properly. Still haven't gone back to it. Still love that game.
I never figured out how to get out of the market area before time ran out, and I hate being forced to do things in games before time runs out.

I remember having to do that secret code thing for those punk kids, catching those punk kids, shooting the balloon things... whatever.

When Mortal Kombat came out on the SNES, it was a censored version without blood.

In an videogame magazine they had found the code to unlock the bloody version with brutal fatalities. They had screenshots and all.

You had to input a code (VERY hard, something like up,down, left, left, right, left, up, down X,X,Y,Y,B up etc etc.

The catch was that because the casings were lighter than the japanese ones you had to tape a penny to your MK cartridge.

Me and a mate tried for 2 hours, putting on different coins because Dutch money doesn't have a penny so we tried different weights.

We never succeeded in unlocking the bloody fatalities...

...a month later I found out why... it was an April's Fools Joke. God that was embarrassing

I would say "I can't beat Plok, Gargoyle's Quest and The Lion King".

But some days ago I managed to finish the first two... now all I have to do is kill Scar. I remember my cousin finished it when I was 5, and he was 13... well now I'm 22 and I can't finish this game. I consider this cousin my sensei, even if he doesn't know. He also used to play versus himself in Fifa 94.. one pad per hand. I'll never be as good as he was.

Sounds like my current record in Mortal Kombat, except replace "Ken" with "Ermac."

I couldn't figure out how to leave Cerulean City in Pokemon Red. A couple days later I realized you have to exit through the back door of one of the houses.

I got stuck in The Simpsons Game demo on 360. I don't remember what I couldn't figure out, but I only played for about 2 minutes until I got stuck.

I really enjoy the Zelda series, but have never beaten a single one of them. I have made it to the end of OoT, Minish Cap (my personal favorite) and Phantom Hourglass, but the first time a puzzle or boss fight stumps me I just move on to another game. I plan to change that though when OoT 3D comes out, I will finish it and then try again with Twilight Princess.

The first RPG I ever beat was Paper Mario. It has to be one of the easiest RPGs ever if even I can beat it. Still one of my favorite games of all time though. I made it to the end of Paper Mario on GameCube but I think my save file was deleted so I never finished it. I think I'll need to do that this summer.

I have played and enjoyed the LEGO games based on Star Wars, PotC, Indiana Jones etc. but have never seen the movies they are based on.

First time through OoT, it took me AGES to figure out that you had to jump off the top of the Deku Tree and fall through the web. Once I did it I felt awesome, but man...must've spent three hours or so running around that joint aimlessly.

I was playing Dementium on the DS on the train home. Had my headphones on to get the full atmosphere.

I turned round, and one of the enemies was just standing there. I gasped and bolted backwards.

On a full train.

I am an embarrassing Super Street Fighter IV player. Just picked it up not too long ago, but learning the ropes has proven to be challenging. I've dabbled in fighters since my tenure of Dead or Alive 4, but clearly not enough for any carryover into this series. I've only played it a handful of times, and I wouldn't expect to be mildly competent at it until I've sunk a few dozen hours into it. Facing another human opponent won't be attempted for quite some time, based on the previous testimony.

I'm going through noob tutorials and reading up on basic strategy, but I won't expect to hold my own against human opponents who've dumped hundreds of hours into SSFIV, but maybe, just maybe, I'll stand a chance once the revision brings in some new blood in a few short weeks.

Was the hugest halo fan, played hundreds of hours of halo 2 online

I haven't passed halo 3, nor have I played reach.... :( What happened to me??
Don't worry. The series stopped being great after Halo 1/2, in my view.

My girl friend told me to play Sonic the Hedgehog 1... I proceeded to do so... I got a game over on Green Hill Zone Act 3... :c

I have an addictive personality... it's usually lead to some pretty bad moments for me. I've been addicted to two MMO's in my time. Ragnarok Online and RF Online.

In Ragnarok I was the most decked out assassin on the server (private server). On this server you could donate to get cards and various other items. I probably donated a hundred dollars in total to get everything I needed to build my character with dual triple critical jurs, and such. I reached max level and spent my days hanging out in the PvP rooms chatting and dominating anyone that attempted to kill me. I eventually started up my own private server and made the money I donated back when some girl paid me $100 to give her every hat in the game... I then got bored of RO and shut the server down about a month later and quit forever.

RF Online... I had a driver on the Bellato side and spent a month of doing absolutely nothing but working and coming home spending my entire day/night (as well as every weekend) grinding XP to level up. The grind from level 49 - 50 took a month of doing this every day. About 1 1/2 months later Codemasters discontinued support for RF Online and shut their servers down....

Also, while I've played many zelda games, and most of the mario games, I have never beaten any of them, nor gotten anywhere close in most cases. I also never beat Final Fantasy 6 as I played it on PS1 and used a gameshark to turn off random battles towards the end of the game because I was sick of them. Unfortunately for me, this broke the game and I was never able to progress past the part I was on, and had no previous saves to go to. I was 56 hours into the game.

Lots of fail there.

I played Shadow the Hedgehog, sober. Long story short, back when I was a freshmen in college a bunch of my friends and I picked this game up for cheap, we wanted something to play. We joked it was Call of Duty but with Sonic and shit. When you are drunk off your ass, this game was fucking awesome. Nothing made sense, it was corny as hell, and you could blow shit up. I really don't know why it was so much fun drunk.

It's like the difference between playing beer pong and experiencing it. There are people who would play beer pong without....beer. It's a game, but a very boring one. You gotta drink beer and get wasted, that's part of the experience! That's how I see Shadow the Hedgehog.

Shadow the Hedgehog is the best damn Sonic game ever made, provided you're drunk. If not, it's quite possibly the worse one ever. I played it sober a few times after the fact and I couldn't understand why we even considered it good. Guess it's not meant to be understood.
