Your thoughts on the name, Wii U?

Hopefully it won't be like the 3DS where a lot of people don't realize it's a new system because of the name.

Even the people watching E3 were confused at first. The controller looks like a Wii peripheral.

What I said in the other thread:

Name makes total sense to me. It remains universally pronounceable and is a successor to Wii so...

It's brand recognition, sure, but at the same time it's so... i dunno... stupid. It feels like a half-step forward instead of the big console generation leap or whatever it is supposed to be.

People spazzed out over the Wii's name, same thing here it seems.

Sounds fine to me, fits with the brand and the idea behind it as Reggie explained.

It's the same goddamn mistake that they made with the 3DS. People won't realize that this is a new console. HECK after seeing the conference I'm still not convinced it's a new console :P.

I hate it.

the name?

hell, i'm convinced they don't even have a next-gen system at this point. they have a gigantic iPad thing. that's it.

Should have just called it Wii 2 if they wanted to keep the Wii bit and it sounds essentially the same. Wii ANYTHING other than Wii U, just sounds and looks awkward.

Wii U? More like Pee-Ew, LOL AMIRIGHT?!

But seriously, it's just a name. Wii started with a bunch of urine & penis jokes and nobody thinks twice about it now.

So instead of making use of possible connectivity with 3ds to a new console, they just flat out put a lcd on a controller and said hey this is for you!, we will call it.. "Wii U" buy it now cause Wii want U moneyz and Wii are smart don't forget all your bases are belong to us.

While lots will hate it, I think it's smart in the way it sums up what the new controller is trying to do. It's an expanded Wii experience that can now individually cater to just you whilst allowing to same coming together that the Wii did.

Wii U has too much w-sounding-ness or something. There is also only, like, one and a half consonants when its spoken.

Weeoo. Wee Ewe. Wee Yoo.

I dunno, my tongue hates it.

Consumers already find the differentiation between the DS and the 3DS confusing.

Why are they making the same mistake twice?

Exactly.

With so many major peripherals upgrading hardware this gen like the Move, Kinect, Motion Plus, Balance Board (or whatever it's called) etc. Wii U sounds like it could be just another minor hardware augmentation. Add to that the fact that anything Wii related that isn't followed by a number is looked at as suspect. For instance you see a game called Call of Duty: Wii, you know it's not a real proper step up in whatever that franchise has come to be know for. It's a minor release tailored to the Wii and in many people's minds that's synonymous with "shitty". This kind of thinking may bleed over into the way people view the Wii U. Put a 2 after it and it would still be a terrible name, but at least there wouldn't be any confusion this is a proper "sequel".

I think this name is a bad idea. Doesn't differentiate it enough from the Wii, and comes with a huge baggage attached.

I kind of hate it, but if the kind of games that I enjoy are made for it, then I'll end up buying it. In the end, it's all about the games for me, and I couldn't care less about a name.

You can look at it two ways. If you look at it as combination of We and You like Reggie said, along with the fact that it kind of sounds like Wii2, it seems like it came out of a high school marketing class. Someone I'm sure thought they were clever but I think its pretty dumb.

But long term its no big deal. It'll eventually just blend in to one word like Ipod or Xbox.

it makes sense, it works, it fits with the 3DS concept of not changing the name entirely to let people know that its not that different of an experience, and that they can feel right at home with it.

No problems at all.

Why keep the Wii part? Same mistake as the 3DS. People are going to expect a side product, not a mainline one.

Exactly. Especially since it uses the old Wii controllers as well.

They really needed an original name here.

I hate it, but from a marketing standpoint it's good. There's a huge new market of casuals who will buy it on name recognition and hardcores will buy it because it's an HD Nintendo system.
