Zelda BotW is going to have a major problem with "the claw" after having new hands-on

For the first time a Nintendo game that is playable in 3rd person you can 100% control the camera.

Hold on, wait

Was this not true in Wind Waker/HD, Twilight Princess GC, Splatoon, Mario Sunshine, Majora's Mask 3D, off the top of my head?

Not to mention Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles X for example. I remember playing Xenoblade on Wii with the nunchuk combo and panning the camera with the directional pad on the Mote while pressing C on the nunchuk and walking with the stick. Since then I'd like to believe i can get through anything . (I also loved the control scheme)

Normally I wouldn't be too worried about the camera, as I regularly shifted between normal and claw when playing Bloodborne, my main concern with that is I'll be playing on Wii U, which means I would be using my index finger for camera control in those situations. For running and jumping that just sounds awful though.

The fact that it's called the "claw" should have been your first hint that it's not considered a normal hand position.

We also call inverted "inverted" when it was the standard stick input metaphor for the previous 80 so years, have "analog" sticks that typically provide trinary digital input, and call them "joy"pads when a quick glance at gaf makes it obvious that their average user hasn't felt true happiness in decades.

Etymological determinism is overrated.

Maybe I'm inferring too much than I really can know, but it sounds like the game probably just doesn't want or expect you to be jumping very often -- that it's just kind of a "supplemental" action.

Wait, this thread isn't about this?

Yuck. Thank god my parents bought me a PS1 instead of an N64.

What? No. You're not supposed to hold the N64 controller like that. One hand always goes in the middle section, the other one on either side.

Glad you enjoyed your PS1, but it really has nothing to do with the quality of the N64 and its controller.

I know, I was joking. :p

Still glad I had a PS1 though...

Call me a weirdo, but unless game has rapidfire jumping puzzles where you need to both sprint, jump and turn camera simultaniously at extremely high speeds, these things are never a problem. Here's what I do. I point camera where I need to sprint, and I sprint there... if I need to adjust view I stop sprinting for a moment, and just tilt stick.

I guess you don't play stuff like Dark Souls, Bayonetta, Monster Hunter, and so on?

People that play action games.

I play Bayonetta and i don't do the claw. Not Sure Speed Runners should be a guideline for normal play and button configuration.

Love Bayo. MH and souls are top 3 IPs along with Metroid. Poured literally thousands of hours into both and never once clawed and really see no need to. Never struggled because of it, either.

I see clawing as obsessive behaviour, if I'm being honest. Huge bump in discomfort for tiny bump in degree of control is a horrible trade off.

Lol this whole thread is dumb. The title is dumb, the thought that people claw in dark souls, bayonetta is dumb. Monster Hunter Insta claw game anymore. This isn't a claw game plenty of Nintendo games have free cameras . Why is this a thread? Lol I dont get it

Who runs, jumps and controls their camera meanwhile?! Honestly what the hell, why is this a 10page thread?

now that you mention it yea who the fuck does that? you usually point the camera in the way you intend on moving and then execute your actions.

The only thing I see as a potential issue is that the sprint and jump buttons are on opposite sides of the diamond. Seems like that would make running jumps difficult/uncomfortable. But I doubt Nintendo would just accidentally make such a mistake, so I guess running jumps aren't really important? Or maybe there's some "lag" after releasing the sprint button, allowing you to move over to the jump button in time.

As for the camera, that's just standard 3rd person stuff. Are we sure the camera doesn't automatically turn when you're sprinting, like in Souls etc?

EDIT:

Literally press left trigger to reset the camera behind you.

Ah, that's that issue solved then.

I don't think I've ever see this being a real problem. I've heard stories of "the claw" in Dark Souls and they're dumb. I get what you're saying, but I seriously don't think this is gonna be an issue for the overwhelming majority. You're always gonna have people who "demand" absolute perfection in controls or it's "shit".

It's ridiculous behaviour as far as I'm concerned. Games are fun, they're not something to lose your shit over (not directed at the OP btw, more a general remark). If you're taking it this seriously, you have other issues I'd say.

Like someone else said, if you're completely lacking in spatial awareness you need to be looking around 100% of the time when moving.

There are people who are "completely lacking in spatial awareness"? How does such a person even survive?

This is why the Steam controller is amazing for Dark Souls, since you can map the run/roll button to one of the pedals on the back.

I think they just haven't remapped the buttons from the Wii U port yet because that is how it should be with the right stick above the buttons.

I feel you OP¨, i use the claw method a lot, especially in games when i have to sprint and look around me at the same time.
If Splatoon players can use the terrible gyro controls (

), Nintendo could at least add more options for Zelda too :(

I kind of understand OP. I don't think running on a button is ideal, I didn't like it in 3D World either in comparison to other Marios where I can control it with the stick. It has a reason why most studios put running on press the stick or the shoulder buttons, because you usually only use 2 face buttons very often (in most cases jump and attack or reload in shooters). That said OP is overthinking it, it won't be a huge problem at all, you don't need to move the camera all the time.

I´ve never grown accustomed to using the claw and I´m a big fan of action games like Bayonetta and DMC4. If I could pull off Dante´s dash-guard cancel combos without using the claw I don´t think a much slower and simpler game like BotW will be any problem.

I don't claw and don't have this problem with Nioh.

Most, if not all, Souls speed runners play like that.

Why? The top button triangle/Y changes your stance between one and two hand. Why would it be useful to keep a constant hold on that button during a speed run?

Sure but if the name doesn't tip you off, the inevitable pain in your hand should.

  • For the first time a Nintendo game that is playable in 3rd person you can 100% control the camera.
  • A 3rd person game where the character can jump and at any time you can control the camera 100% yourself.
  • A 3rd person game where the character can sprint/run and at any time you can control the camera 100% yourself.
You can do all that in XenobladeX.
Oh ok the point is to run, jump and control the camera at the same time.
Ha ha, no, thank you.

Nintendo can do a lot of stupid shit nobody understands but creating bad control schemes isnt one of those dimwit decisions... usually

There are 2 very easy solutions on top of my head

1. you maybe dont have to hold b to Sprint, just tap b and tap jump button as soon as you need it. Camera also shouldnt be a problem because of recentering shoulderbutton

2. you maybe can alternativly jump like dark souls 1 and 3, hold down b and press it twice fast to jump as secondary way to jump besides just pressing y

Also lol at thread length, the thirst is REAL

Edit:

Years of Monster Hunter have prepared me well.

What an abomination
Disgusting

This is truly fucked up. Please go see a doctor lol

What is it with some people insulting how other people play games?

I've played several games that REQUIRE claw if you want to play well, like MGS Portable Ops/Peace Walker, Gears of War, etc. and if you guys can find a better way to play please let us know thx.

I guess you don't play stuff like Dark Souls, Bayonetta

I don't think that's comparable. Run and jump is on the same button in DS, and Bayonetta doesn't even have a run button. BotW seems to have both separate run and jump buttons, so it's not the same.

I've used the claw for games like Halo before... but
1) isn't this the whole point of L targeting/centering in Zelda? And
2) how is this different from any other game like Witcher 3 or Read Dead Redemption (which are even worse in the sense that you have to tap the sprint button if i recall correctly)?
