Zelda: Skyward Sword @ GDC New Trailer

How exactly is this less change than SMG?
Super Mario Galaxy changed how people looked at 3-D environments. This game is just another upgrade of Ocarina of Time.

At the very least, I hope this Zelda is somewhat challenging. The Twilight Princess was a complete joke when it came to difficulty, and that really hurt the game.

Overall, a very intriguing trailer. I personally think the graphics look very clean. Anyone else wanna guess that they're using a modified Mario Galaxy engine (probably the best engine on the Wii right now)?

This trailer was definitely meant to show off the Motion Plus combat and puzzles more than the epic hype of Zelda. When you think about actually doing the stuff in that trailer with the controller, it seems like this could be the deepest motion control game yet. At best it could do for motion controls what Ocarina did for 3D sword combat.

Needs more crap on the screen. Wasn't Wii gaming supposed to be more natural?
The transparent Wii controller on screen really needs to go. People should be smart enough to remember where buttons are on a controller.

How is it just an upgrade of OoT? All they've shown is the combat (which isn't like OoT).

I don't know which I am more ready for: a full reboot of the zelda franchise or the end of the Wii generation.

This franchise has become the Tony Hawk of adventure games.

They really need to do something to change up the series.

Three useless comments in 15 minutes. Come on, you can be more constructive or even creative than that.

Trade Epona in for a skateboard, do some sick tricks around Hyrule. Fuck yea.

Making swordplay organic and meaningful to the gameplay mechanics in a way that has never been done before in any other adventure game isn't changing things up?

When you guys say you want a reboot, I always ask myself "in what way exactly?".. I found out that keeping that question inside is useless, so I'm going to redirect the question to you guys.

They said they would, for a while, but I guess they couldn't come up with anything new and interesting so they stuck with the OoT formula this time around as well.

The game seems uninspired..

More natural swordplay doesn't change anything with the formula, story, etc.
"Kill shit. Go to dungeon. Kill shit. Go to dungeon. Fight Ganon. Rescue Zelda".

Wind Waker gets props because it introduced new elements: boat traversal, little bit of stealth, messing around with characters, yada yada yada...

The game looks dull and formulaic. No magic or excitement.

It's still just the same old dungeon crawling with one item per dungeon and a few puzzles.

Making players swing the Wiimote around doesn't really change the series.

How do you know this from the shown trailer?

I'm amazed at all the things that people can say for certain from a poorly edited trailer. Just wait for it to come out before start saying that this game is another upgraded OoT.

Though I'm happy that people are not creaming themselves with this, high hype levels only lead to disappointment one way or another.

How have you people seen enough of the game to make these sweeping generalizations?

Gameplay I suspect. I think this game is centered around motion plus. Not surprisingly since it's a Nintendo game.

Looking at how precise it is, I think we can talk about improvement. Not about revolution though.

It's amazing how so many people in this thread have already played and beaten Skyward Sword. God I wish I had a time machine like these guys.

could you go more in depth with the game? how's the dungeon design? are the characters good?

I'm looking forward to playing this. The sword play stuff looks like its going to be awesome. Here's hoping its out sooner than later.

just to be totally fair, i think the presumption is that if any larger changes were being made to structure or convention that nintendo would be smart enough to highlight these things. that may be an erroneous presumption, but you can at least see the logic, even if no one has actually touched or played the game.

trailer was underwhelming because i wanted a more story-focused thing because i'm a huge zelda fanboy. but this was gdc so i guess they wanted to show off gameplay again. it's kinda nice to see that there's a little more variety than just 'slice this thing here' (i mean, that's what the shield was, but it was presented in a different way), but i think people wanted something more like the e305 tp trailer or even the e304 tp trailer. those had music specifically chosen or crafted just for the trailer and the scenes were edited in a way to create excitement for the game and not necessarily the gameplay.

and because we got another trailer that just shows off the gameplay, i'm guessing it's nintendo's official unofficial announcement that the game will be hitting later in the year, which makes this trailer doubly disappointing.

That one character is the worst designed anything related to Zelda in history

otherwise trailer looks HOLY SHIT

BEST TRAILER NEWS: Looks like puzzles ARE taking advantage of the specific wiimote specialties. Yaaaay!

Of course. Haven't you?

Don't tell me you have just seen that one mashed-up area in the E3 demo and today's mish-mash of directional slicing they had the courage of calling "trailer", man. That would be ridiculous.

Ridiculous plot twists and Ganon once again. I smiled when Midna came back to rescue Tetra, though.

Yah, your right, The art doesn't look inspired by impressioniism and the gameplay and mechanics that we have seen thus far don't seem at all influenced and designed with motion plus in mind.

Too bad the trailer didn't show more, I guess it was all about motion+ but I am a lot more interested in the structure of the game. I hope we get more on that later.

I'll wait for the reviews. So far I have not been impressed with the accuracy (or lack thereof) of the M+ for even simple games like WSR. While it looks cool in the trailer, I can't help but be afraid that Skyward Sword will get really frustrating to play when half of my inputs are wildly inaccurate. Hopefully WSR was just a poor implementation because it was the first game to use M+ and not because M+ is simply unable to be accurate.

Wait for reviews? Seriously? This is fucking Zelda, bro.

That trailer left me thoroughly underwhelmed. I guess I just want to see something truly new from Zelda instead of just more of the same. Will I still buy it? Yeah.

One thing I want in a Zelda game is actual VA. But I don't want Nintendo of America anywhere near it cause I've seen what they do (Metroid Other M). So in essence, I want VA in a fake language ala Shadows of the Colossus. Twilight Princess did this to an extent with Midna and I thought it worked well.

Howdy.

So, uh, anyone know if the unsightly HUD is going to be in the finished product? I mean, really, that can't possibly be the case, right?

edit: Impressionism, holy shit. I guess that's one way to describe it.

Is this where we get in line to bitch?

Because Link's hat is so gauche

Like, holy shit

Green flops again? Really? They fucking promised they would change this shit up and in light of games like TF2 are we really okay with just one hat?

But noo, every game has to be exactly like Ocarina of Time, right down to the motherfucking floppy hat.

After like 600 games, do we seriously have to keep dealing with this shit? I am a bigger Zelda fan than everyone (I only hate about 80% of the games in the series) and even I am tired of this. And you know when I'm tired of it, everyone is. Because that's the way it works.

Sorry, Nintendo. You just lost a sale. Hype died. Battleship sunk. Wolverines.

To be fair though, some of the things they've talked about changing up sound hard to show in a 1 1/2 - 3 minute trailer. Like the whole no dungeon entrance and the overworld slowly becomes the dungeon in an area type thing.

Even worse than whatever those sky chickens were called in TP?

Has he surpassed the chicken people from TP then? :P

Pretty big assumption to make. The improved motion controls are easy to highlight and easy for people to see and understand, trying to show how dungeon design or other gameplay aspects have changed is significantly harder to convey in a short trailer.

This game does look really good, I think the sword animations look kind of odd, but other than that it should be awesome. I wonder what they could do to change Zelda though.... Even the DS games that were a lot different, still had the same formula.
