Zelda: Skyward Sword @ GDC New Trailer

I don't think the use of Motion Plus is going to overtake at all the exploration and puzzle solving(might enhance it).

But then again, Metroid Prime 3 was kind of dumbed down for me because of the remote.

I have more faith that the controller in the new Zelda won't take the game too far from its roots.

Also, I don't think that's the Majora's Mask - it just a simple skulltula.
Note the eyes on its back...

I'm really late, but I think it looks great. Except for the ridiculous HUD, of course. And anyone who has faith in Nintendo fixing something as simple and obvious as that hasn't played a Zelda game in the last decade.

Colors look a little off:

Wow, this game is so colorful!

I really am digging the art style. I'm really liking the feel and it looks like the combat finally has another layer added to it that seems to be fun. Can't wait to get my hands on this!

Also glad they decided to go through with the orchestral music for this one. As long as it keeps up, this will probably be one of the best OSTs yet!

Also obligatory: You can change what displays on the HUD; that stupid huge picture of the Wiimote will not be there if you don't want it to be.

I think the soundtrack will be comparable to that of The Wind Waker. Well, I'm not talking in terms of quality, though. In other Zelda-games, like Twilight Princess, Nintendo just used the conventional compositions. In The Wind Waker f.e. you still notice the typical Zelda tunes, but always with a very own and outstanding twist. The music of this trailer reminds me of that.

I've been saying the exact same thing since I played Twilight Princess on the Wii. Their recent games don't seem to have any kind of soul or personality anymore.
It's so annoying when people use nebulous terms like "soul" and "personality" instead of adequately conveying why they think the Zelda team has "lost their way."

On top of it all, they're just really behind compared to everyone else in the industry, and I'm not blaming it on hardware, it's all design.
This is such garbage. Please, name me some levels from other action/adventure games this generation that surpass the dungeons in Twilight Princess. TP had the best set of dungeons of any 3D Zelda game, yet you act like they're incapable of good game design.

By all means,Zelda is getting very old and Nintendo even knows this, that's why Miyamoto told us the series would be getting an overhaul, but this sure doesn't look to be one. Now instead of building upon what makes Zelda fun (exploration/puzzles) in a new way, they're putting it in the back seat to make a combat focused game? It looks that way...
Zelda fans have been clamoring for change for half a decade now, and now that they're finally getting it, they're bitching about that.

Actually, it's not the entire Zelda fanbase. It's the very small and very vocal subset of malcontents who will never be satisfied with anything EAD does.

I'll reserve my final judgement for when the game comes out of course, but being disappointed in a Zelda game is nothing new for me, so I'm not all that optimistic here.
I'm sure you'll dislike it, because you're clearly not even giving the game a chance. We've seen two small trailers and one single demo and you're already jumping to conclusions.

my favorite complaint is that skyward sword is "uninspired".

I'm just going to throw a note out that people are allowed to have either a negative or positive opinion of a trailer without getting harassed for their opinion.

Discussing opinions is completely fine.

Telling someone to go away or that they're stupid because of their opinion on a totally subjective topic is not.

what about when people making sweeping generalizations like how bad the combat is and how ugly the hud looks even though you can turn off the wii-mote look or wish the game had no motion control, is that still a valid opinion?

What do you mean "the enemies look like pushovers"?... you can tell this from seconds of combat in a trailer. LOL! I have determined from this trailer that the game is too easy. Hilarious!

Agreed.

And going on Nintendo's recent track record, the game could very well have the highest difficulty of any recent Zelda due to possible Super Guide implementation.

I mean, New Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Country: Returns, And Mario Galaxy 2 were all harder than the previous games because Nintendo felt they could increase the difficulty with the Super Guide as a safety net.

I think it's look like it has potential to be a great Zelda game. Colors in the trailer were a little muted, but I'm not worried because last years E3 the colors were fine during the live demo

It's the word of the day.

Man, I hope so. The Zelda series has been pretty easy since aLttP. Would like to see some sort of a challenge again.

Exactly.

Though I can't quite understand why the colors appear so muted.

Look, I too admitted that the trailer was underwhelming, but seriously, it's either this or more PH/ST. Gee, which one to pick, eh?

Well, even if you can turn the HUD off, it's still offensive to my eyes dammit!

I personally had quite a lot of trouble with NSMBW, and I'm playing through DKCR right now and some of the levels are almost impossible (it may just seem more difficult to me as I generally suck at 2D platformers).

Though if Nintendo is including the super guide, I'm sure the difficulty will be going up as well.

It seems to me that Zelda fans are among the most passionate and irrational of video game fans out there. I will agree with you that both Skyward Sword trailers didn't exactly have that epic feel to them that we've experienced in past Zelda trailers. But...
GIVE THE GAME A CHANCE.

Twilight Princess threw in stuff that we didn't know sucked or not UNTIL we got to play it. The Wolf Link concept was cool and seemed like it would be fun. However, it ended up being one of the most boring and disappointing parts of the game. Combat seemed like it would be challenging but it turned out that it was the complete opposite.

The only thing that could safely be stated was that all of the Hyrulian NPCs either looked butt ugly or creepy.

With the exception of the heavy focus on motion control for combat and puzzle-solving, we still don't know how else Nintendo plans on attempting to shake up the stale game design.

The dumbing down came from complaints of MP2 that the game was too hard, the backtracking/fetch quests are tedious, the map is confusing, and "Why doesn't my Metroid play like Halo." IMO.

Unless you're referring to the fact that instead of beam switching for puzzles and combat we had to switch between Power beam, Grapple and Missiles. To me that was a welcome change of pace and I liked that idea of switching between that trinity than different beams. I only wish they had taken the concept a little farther.

WTF why was the trailer so blurry and the colors so dull? Is it one of those cases where the game is being held back by the wii? But then SMG looks so amazing and TWW is much more crisp.
I still think SS has the best art because it managed to combine the best of TP with TWW but the technical graphics are jarring.
The editing of the video wasn't exciting too but at least we got some meaty gameplay footage.
I am unimpressed with the trailer like everyone but you have to be retarded to say that this game doesn't bring anything new to the series. The focus on motion controls is a huge game changer that I've always dreamed about for the series since I saw the spaceworld tech demo. The combat and enemies will be more engaging because you're required to be precise and figure out the patterns to defeat the enemy instead of button mashing a single button. It also looks like they're making the combat more challenging by giving the shield a damage meter so players can't just hold z all the time.
This is way more innovative than anything that TWW introduced from its trailers yet people treat it like some sacred cow now. Seriously a new setting and different type of vehicle... thats it?

BTW
When TWW was first announced I was one of those OOT fanboys who hated it but soon warmed up to the game's style. The only thing that kept me from liking the game itself was the rushed design and missing features.

I agree with you to a point. I think it's a given that the game was made easier due to feedback from Echoes. But Corruption was clearly built around the strengths and limitations of the Wii remote. That's to be expected. In my opinion, it was not to the game's benefit. It caused most of the bosses to feature the same sort of "jump over shockwave, knock back floating orb" pattern, because the Wiimote allowed players free control of the pointer. Didn't work for me. Seemed to amount to little more than a tech demo, and the substance I'd come to expect from the series simply wasn't there.

That's a discussion for a different thread, though. What I've seen from this video indicates a better approach to Wii control. Wii Motion+ is a great asset, and it looks like they're taking full advantage of it.

It's a rip of an Internet stream. That's why it looks so bad.

Whatever happened to this being something new and different? Looks like a Zelda game with some motion controls thrown in. I wanted this to be refreshing...now I'm just disappointed.

Sounds like an impossible fantasy you were irrationally anticipating, to be honest.

When a virtual reality Zelda game gets made, we'll call you.

I understand the people who aren't too excited over the graphics, especially with the specific areas picked in the trailer, but what I really don't get is the disappointment that this is just another OoT/TP/whatever. You simians haven't seen anything beyond 5 minutes of gameplay in ONE LEVEL! You don't know what the story is, or any of the defining mechanics of the game, or even who the fucking bad guy is! What the hell did you think when you saw the first images/trailer for something like Majora's Mask? You would have (and I'm sure many DID) brushed it off as just more OoT or whatever.

I mean seriously, this is honestly beyond illogical at this point in time.

I like Zelda the way it is. I'm all for creativity, but at the end of the day, I still want it to be a Zelda game. The only change that I'd welcome is letting Retro have a crack at it. I'm sure they'd make an incredible Zelda game.

Uhhhh the motion control mechanic is something new and different. WTF were you expecting? FPS view? Kart races? Get real here. If the game was released with some new trippy art direction without fundamental changes in gameplay like what the focus in motion control is doing to the combat and puzzle aspect of the game, it would end up being even more of a samey rehash.

Seems like everyone is just focusing on the graphics and totally ignoring the gameplay features.

That would be awesome. I would be so hyped for a Retro Studios Zelda game.

I've accepted that the combat cant be like this, but I was thinking it would be more free form than slashing at different angles. The part that makes it kinda annoying is that a lot enemies seem to be of 'you can only slash me at this angle' type. But I haven't seen the entire game so who knows.

Also I might have missed this, but can you parry attacks with the sword?

Oooh, actually we'll probably find out more about the shiekah and their secret ways!

Ehm ehm..

Did they fix that animation where Link holds the sword like a douchebag while running around? You know, like in last year's gameplay vids. I sure hope so, but I do find it highly amusing.

I never liked the DS games all that much, so I'm kinda worried. But if it's more like Twilight Princess (I love that game, don't hate), then I'm game. I read in the interviews that they are gonna mix up the dungeon and exploring parts this time, so I'm looking forward to that.

Question I asked earlier and no one answered:

I asked earlier about proof that the HUD can be turned off/is optional. Can someone provide me with a source? Much appreciated.

Also, I'm really surprised people aren't liking this. It's quite obviously going to be fun gameplay-wise, as well as the colors being washed out from the video quality, not the game. I don't think they made a conscious choice to take color away. It's not the story trailer I and everyone wanted, BUT OH WELL. We'll just have to wait for E3.

GAF is so crazy. Negative toward everything.

People reserve the right to think that the art-style looks "uninspired", but to say that a Zelda game itself that has been in development for over 4 years by a trustworthy, reputable team of designers is "uninspired", I think is a bit premature.

Hmmmmm, the controls still seem rather dubious. The amount of enemies is going to have to be reduced from the usual horde or arms are going to get really tired.

Don't know how I feel about the artstyle either. I hate his pants.
