Zelda: Skyward Sword @ GDC New Trailer

He looks nicely confident, alert, and determined, which is definitely an improvement over TP's kinda pervy open-mouthed "durr hurr" excitement. But there are a couple other subtle things that make the SS Link more to my liking - He's a bit slimmer, and his stance seems to have a lot more energy and dynamism to it. You can't see their legs in that shot, but TP link seems like he's a lot more "flat-footed" in that pose than SS Link. SS Link looks like he might break into a run any second by comparison, because his torso isn't completely on the vertical like TP Link's. Also, I'm digging the open collar.

before twilight princess was shown off at e304, i remember saying here that i would love a cel-shaded zelda with an ocarina art style.

hey it's been seven years, but it's awesome we're actually getting one.

i wouldn't mind if the series stayed cel-shaded from here on out. there's more they can do to change up the style for each game this way (like amirox's suggested dark shadow cel-shaded zelda).

I hear ya. I think SS is really going to impress once we get the final product. Nintendo has just taken a very nonchalant approach to promoting the game, which is basically the opposite of what they did with TP. I'm not sure if it's purposeful or not, but I am very confident SS will exceed expectations going forward.

Man I hate the term cel-shaded, its inaccurate.

Its a painterly look, as opposed to a realistic or photo referenced one.

Yah, seems pretty clear they were aiming for a Link closer to the original.

I haven't really realized until recently, but of everything we seen so far of skyward sword, is pretty much what I wanted in the next iteration of a 3d zelda.

This is a little bit of speculation, but I'd also like to point out that I believe the design choices in Link's clothing(loose clothing, baggy pants), were based on the fact that he is a quicker and more agile character with the ability of flight.

A lot of overlap and follow-through can be seen through those design choices; would make the animation more interesting.

I used to feel goosebumps when new Zeldas showed up.

This one isn't even a blip on my radar, it looks poor.

That probably has to do more with you not being a child.

Still looks substantially less visually exciting than The Wind Waker. Small steps back to greatness though.

I like Wind Waker's style except for the giant heads, so this is a nice middle ground for me. Distinct cel shading, without being completley over exaggerated.

Eh. Whenever a new console Zelda comes out, I have a hard time bringing myself to care until I buy it on a whim and find myself loving it. This trailer doesn't really break that cycle. Swordplay looks good, seems like we're getting some new items as well.

I'm still not a fan of the art style. I loved Wind Waker, art and all, but I never really wanted to see another cel shaded Zelda game. I still very much prefer the SoTC art style of Twilight Princess.

Music sounds nice.

My big complain about the Wind Waker's style are the huuuuuuuuuuge arms. I know its supposed to be cartoony, but man they bugged me.

Yeah theres just a lot of exaggerated limbs in that game.

I remember the days when I would get so worked up over a trailer... the hype was unbearable. good times.

and the fallout was worse. I perfer to try to stay moderately hyped. I was disappointed by Twilight Princess due to my inflated hype.

It is highly possible those are not pants, but a parachute.

If he REALLY does pull a god damned gangsta style free-fall from Skyloft down to Hyrule as shown in the first trailer, he's gonna need a fucking parachute.
Um, unless of course that that free-fall jump leads into flight (presumably with a little help from the swordfairy queen).

That isn't old Zelda artwork but it's close enough. That artwork was made for the GBA version of ALttP. But still Link used to have a very colorful anime look to him:

As much as I really liked the design of TP Link, it really is an oddball in the series. Of course the same could be said about TWW Link also in terms of the actual style he's depicted in.

I feel really comfortable with the SS art style. It seems like a good balance that Zelda games have needed.
TP was nice, but dark and prototypical, also it was made too late. That game should have been released on the GCN, but we all know that the WII needed a boost.

SS seems to be a good step back from TP, in to WW land. Good balance. I think SS will prove to be better than TP in all regards.

Goofy potato-nosed Link would look beyond horrible in 3D. I think SS is the closest they can get without having him look too ridiculous.

I enjoyed Twilight Princess, but i do think that the hype raised my expectations too high.

I had huge expectations for Twilight Princess. Massive.

It met some of them, fell below some of them, and exceeded some of them.
And some people wonder why Nintendo doesn't show too much of their games until the release is closer!

Nintendo could introduce it three days before it's released and my expectations would be the same.

It's a Zelda game. It's natural to expect only the best. It's a challenge that Nintendo would want to have.

I did too. I'm still sad I don't have it anymore, cause I want to play it again. I may get the GCN version though

Twilight Princess and Brawl certainly suffered from the long hype-up campaigns if we assume internet backlash is meaningful.

Looking back, it was foolish of me to stay up for Japan Time every night.
Completely burned me out on trying to unlock everything.
But it was so damn addicting...

Those Skyward Sword comparisons do show off the new design nicely. The trailers so far have just been crap, but I know the game itself will be great. I wonder if it'll end up being one of the least played/sold Zelda games, with the Wii's active userbase drying up and people moving onto the 3DS. Although Majora was in a similar position and sold well.

Yeah, I didn't eat up the hype for either of those and I enjoyed both. Huh, I didn't eat up the hype for GTAIV either and I enjoyed that...

Guess I'll continue not hyping myself up for most stuff!

who the fuck is Steve!?

All the way back when all we had was that single piece of art the gamefaqs board got board of calling her "Sword Girl" so they decided to give her a name. So to contrast with her obvious femininity they gave her the masculine name Steve. Then they did the same thing with the new NPC calling him Debbie. The GameFaqs zelda boards are weird.

It's too late. Your secretly hyped for this now.

I wonder if Nintendo will add in a layer of filter or whatever it's called to make the overall game looks much closer to the above artwork. The current screenshots are a bit cartoony and saturated IMO.

MH3 Tri did a good job of applying something like a blur filter to give the whole game a very 'soft' look plus to cover up the aliasing problem of the Wii. The Last Story did that too.
