Zelda: Skyward Sword @ GDC New Trailer

There is no Zelda cycle. That's just everyone's overactive imagination.

edit: Also wow at the kind of life this thread has. Imagine what the E3 trailer and the actual release of the game is gonna be like.

I don't know what this means, but I like it.

I'm just glad they didn't decide to do anything gimmicky for this game. "Hey guys Link is living above the clouds, lets let him transform into an eagle!"

I'd play it. Just include stylus controlled flight and I'll be there day one

Yeah, I guess that would be too awesome.

I wonder if we will get to ride a horse this time around.

I'll probably still get this but I'm certainly on the fence and thats a first for me regarding a Zelda game. I agree that this franchise needs some type of shake up. At this point I'd settle for something different in the story.. maybe an older link, grey at the temples, rescuing Queen Zelda's daughter(his illegitimate child) or something. I don't know just something a bit different.
kill this with fire

The mechanical beetle is introduced early to introduce players to the flight mechanic that appears later in the game when link transforms into a phoenix.

The 'sword girl' doesn't become the master sword, Link does; the wings on the blade represent his phoenix form and the phoenix symbol on the Hyrule Shield is in his memory when he sacrifices himself to seal proto-Ganon away with the fully powered Master Sword. Because his symbol was the phoenix, it suggests that somewhere, when Hyrule is in danger, a Link will 'rise from the ashes' to restore balance.

The 'sword girl' falls in love with Link and upon his death becomes the Great Fairy, forever aiding each successive Link through history.

BAM.

For all the harping about art school, Aonuma did graduate with a degree in design from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.

Oh cool were gonna throw the "I go to art school argument"? Because I can do that too. Using other peoples opinions to validate an argument is weak.
Except I wasn't. I'm stating I'm confused because the artists I know as well as non-artists think this game looks laughable. I'm surprised it gets so much love here. I'm not saying who's right or wrong. I'm just sharing my experiences.

And, yes, I know you're an artist. I pretty good one too.

The art style for this looks really nice, the models are nice and exaggerated, easy to read, pleasant colors, good use of textures to hide the console limits. A lot of people here bitch because we,,, because its not a next-gen game and its harder to appreciate in a sense, but this game looks pretty gorgeous.
Super Mario Galaxy is gorgeous. Skyward Sword.... sorry, man, but I just don't see it. I can't agree, especially with the "good use of texture." Everything looks flat. Super flat. And the watercolor effect looks embarrassing. Did they just discover the default fliters in photoshop?

I will say one thing though: the environments do remind me of the 2D games, and that's a good thing. There is clearly a lot of content shown in the level design in the second trailer. I'm also pleased to see some interesting character designs after the big scare of seeing those ugly, big nosed Moblin things in the demo. With that demo, I felt like Link's model didn't even belong in the same game as them, but now that fear is put to rest.

Can I ask you something? Do you feel that Skyward Sword is pushing the Wii hardware graphically?

As Raging Spaniard has tell you, we can all play that.
Im in my last year of art college, and I have showed the game to friends and they really like it, even liking that the backgrounds have a Cezanne style (even if you call it watercolor photoshop). One of the few complaints was the pants of Link (which I tell that its maybe becuase of the flying theme the game has and the resemble aviator pants). Oh look, my art college friends and your art school friends opinions clash. How can be that possible!

So in resume it doesnt mean my opinion or the opinions of my art college friends are better than any of the people that post here or give opinion in real life. So please, dont use that argument again to validate your opinion.
You seem to only hear what you want to hear. Good luck with that.

War has changed. It's no longer about Hyrule, ideologies or ethnicity. It's an endless series of sword battles, fought by Moblins and Hylians. War, and its consumption of life, has become a well-oiled Spinner. War has changed. NPC monsters carry ID sidequests, resulting in ID gear. Rupees inside their bodies to emerge when defeated. Genetic control. Information control. Emotion control. Mask control. Everything is monitored, and kept in control. War has changed. The age of deterrence has become the age of Waggle control. All in the name of averting catastrophe from weapons of one dungeon usage. And he who controls the Triforce, controls history. War has changed. When the battlefield is under total control, war...brings more smiles to more faces.

Since it hasn't been discussed in the thread yet, here we go:

In TP, the sky people were long gone. So they have to disappear somehow.

My guess is that sometime during SS, main villain fucks Skyloft up bad, everyone flee to the ground, Hylians are actually from Skyloft, and Links shield looks like OOT and TP Link's shields because the Hyrulians are actually the fallen Skyloft people and therefore use the same imagery. Over time they forgot that they once lived in the sky and it all becomes a neat legend.

:D

but there is great amounts of evil in Hyrule while the people are living in Skyloft (or something like that). if they moved to Hyrule, I can only imagine lots of conflict

Yes this is very likely, but I think Hylians are likely a mix of people who were already inhabiting the land and the people who descended from the sky.

If you're gonna do the "Old Link" thing, at least do it justice;

That said, I'd much rather see this old dude training his young replacement (acting like Navi or Midna, giving advice as the Wise old Man archetype) and Link inheriting his garb when he inevitably bites the dust.

Nope sorry, your old Link isn't as good as my old Link.

That is more likely, yes.

I hope the villain attacks Skyloft with ~6000 dragons while the Dark Interlopers buttfuck the mainland and this motivates Sword Girl to transform into the Master Sword then Ganon tapdances across a frozen Lake Hylia wearing Tingle as a hat and the Triforce is spinning out of control and Link is grinding grass for rupees then the moon crashes and flattens everyone

His hair isn't even grey at the temples, he looks more like Homeless Link.

Errr....he uses hair coloring. Anyways when Link turns old he should be more of a wise old man figure living on his ranch advising youngsters. He shouldn't wear big gloves and try to act like he's still a badass, people will just laugh at him.

I still believe MM is the most unique Zelda game to date. Transforming into different creatures was not only limited to dungeons, but you had to solve puzzles to progress further or reach new areas in the overworld. Also, the minigames were fun when it came to the Deku, Goron, and Zora transformations. The gameplay really was fresh, and besides transforming, you had to the time mechanic, too.

I like the art style, but what's up with these environments. They look blocky and empty. Is this necessary with the new control scheme? Twilight Princess wasn't this simplistic looking.

The 3d puzzles with the wiimote have potential. I'm surprised more Wii games don't have stuff like that.

Deku Link = Best Link

What I find interesting about Skyloft is that it seems to have more of a eastern/hindu influence while Hyrule so far in the games has had a very celtic/western influence. Zelda has always been a mix between the two. Zelda has a lot of influence from Arthurian legend while at the same time the concept of the triforce, three goddeses, reincarnation, etc. is very eastern.

Epona is cool, but it'd be nice to be able to choose my horse. They could be different breeds with corresponding strengths and weaknesses. (Speed, stamina, draft suitability, jump height, spookiness, war training.)

... *takes a pull on the pipe* Aaahh... that'd be awesome.

Rabbit trail: you could breed them to get a horse with your ideal combination of traits.

Really hope this isn't going to be OoT 3.0, but it appears to be just that gameplay wise.

Come on, that was fun in 1998, Zelda needs a Mario Galaxy like overhaul imo.

Still, I'm going to love it :) Will be nice to play a Wii game again after Galaxy 2. I am fstarting to forget what a Wiimote looks like....

Bzzt. Wrong. Try again.

I'm not sure what kind of evolution you people want. Zelda is always going to be about a kid with a sword who goes on adventures, fights monsters, solves puzzles. Do you people wan't to play a kart racer? That would be a very "innovative" take on the Zelda game.

As sad as it sounds, I share your feelings.

All I want is a game that is closer to what the 2d games were. Getting rid of the hub type overworld would be a huge start for me.

Out of curiosity, where are you seeing this watercolor effect? What I see is clearly shooting for an oil on canvas look, with a noticeable Cézanne influence.

You mean the Bokoblins, right?

The ones that, in Twilight Princess, looked like this:

....and whose look is clearly inspired by the Japanese oni:

Please, could you tell me what's so ugly, both artistically and technically, especially compared to the Bokoblins from TP? I'm asking because I really can't tell.
