Zelda: Skyward Sword @ GDC New Trailer

That would be AMAZING and incredibly fitting
I think I remember someone bringing that up with Miyamoto and he pretty much said: "wow, that's a good idea - I didn't even think of that".
Hopefully someone can pull up the exact quote.

Screw Epona. All it does is hinder the awesomeness of the overworld. I'd rather have an interesting overworld with climbable areas, vines and shit.

Having a horse pretty much forces the overworld to be large just to give the player an area to traverse with the horse. If you remove it, the overworld might be smaller, yes, but it would feel more packed with things to do and as a result, it would feel less bland.

That's what I think, anyway. Flying would be cool too but what's the point of an overworld if you can just fly over it? I hope they have a 2D Zelda mentality with this game, rather than "Hey, let's 1-UP the overworld in Twilight Princess!"

And given that we finally have the 3D-eqivalent of the Pegasus Boots here I think that we don't need Epona anymore. You're just more agile with the sprinting feature than on horseback.

Nintendo always states that the they dumbed down the aggression of enemies in the demos, but it's never true.

I remember that the Fire Temple Boss needed less hits to get defeated in the Demo, but other than that I don't remember anything to get dumbed down.

That's actually something I've been thinking about, it would make sense to have some kind of upgrade to the sprint ability and the pegasus boots would fit quite well.

i was thinking i would touch myself if this comes true.

The pegasus boots made me think of Link sprinting and then taking flight into the sky like the feather in Super Mario.

Without a doubt, there will sky travel. Now whether it will be delegated to overworld travel or, to what I think is more likely, a device for moving between the ground overworld and a sky overworld/area.

I think in this sense it will be similar to the device in Wind Waker from the ocean to
the ocean floor/old Hyrule
. While I think the sky area will be limited, it would be a nice surprise that the sky setting had an overworld with floating islands to travel between.

I know there was a quote from Aonuma during the development of Spirit Tracks regarding how his daughter liked traveling in a train and wanted to travel through the sky. An airship perhaps?

It will certainly be interesting to see how involved the sky elements are in addition to everything else the team seems to be doing with the gameplay.

a flying motorcycle? what kind of tripe is that

it needs to be a giant eagle, that's totally original

let's steal from Rescuers Down Under
Phoenix -> Hyrule crest -> distinctive color is red -> same color as Epona (or The King of Red Lions)

Epona would make sense on (mostly) flat land. If the overworld is, on average, even remotely as busy as the demo area, a horse would be useless.
Link needs some way to travel between each island, or to get on the ground, though.

They said it was an area built specifically for the demo, but I wouldn't be surprised to see something very similar in the final game.

Yes, I think the most important thing is it all seems to be one single enormous 'room' (board?) with lots of clifftop paths and bridges. To me it's reminicent of the SNES and Gameboy games where you're always seeing parts of the world which are out of your reach and have to find a way to get there.
I think certain features will have been put there to show off the gameplay, but the actual map surrounding the tree should be very similar in the final game.

Nah man this game is gonna be the origin story of the Thunderbird from Zelda II

it used to be good, but now it's eeeeeevillll

It looked like in that demo footage of SS that there is no Z targeting with the bow. That's pretty weak.

I'm actually playing through TP for the first time as I never got around to playing it in the past. The wolf sections are mind numbingly boring. About as braindead as you can get. I'm only on the second dungeon but hopefully it gets better. Do you seriously have to gather tears for each new area you go to?

You only have to gather tears before the first 3 dungeons from what i can remember. That's another reason why all the dungeons that follows are better. Keep playing, the game gets better overall.

My thoughts exactly.

I've yet to see a decent clip of the demo area (everyone that plays it seems to be absolutely terrible at the game). I'd love a video where a player just explores the area instead of fighting enemies (maybe Nintendo makes them do that though). The few seconds they show the map were most exciting to me because you can finally see how big the area is. I'm just hoping the demo area is a good indicator of what the rest of the environments will be; large and somewhat non-linear with loads of height differences and paths and stuff to find.

As was already mentioned before: the fact that Link now seems to be able to sprint (for short distances?) suggests that Epona might not be in this game and I, for one, am all for that.

i think aonuma said she was in it

i hope they spend time giving you a bond between link and sword girl (and also link's girlfriend who you don't care about) and their fight against clown man and then after two lines of dialogue zelda becomes your companion at the end and you fight ganon, over and over again

I want a game with a female Link later revealed to be Zelda, just to fuck with the people confusing the two.

I know they're not 100% redundant, but to me there is too much overlap. All serve the purpose of hitting things far away. If instead we had a grappling hook and a bow, it would still have almost the same utility as the 6 items I listed. Surely they could afford to drop the slingshot for something more interesting without sacrificing anything.
Whose to say that they are sacrificing anything for those 6 items. In TP and many other Zeldas, you get lots of items outside of dungeons. One could also argue why we had Bow & Arrow, Gale Boomerang, Clawshot, and slingshot in TP, it's the same situation. The Gale Boomerang delivered short range items to the player, while the clawshot could grab and transport you to other areas. There was little advantage to using Gale Boomerang, Clawshot, Slingshot over Bow & Arrow for a fight. In this game there is a valid reason because the Bow & Arrow is a lot slower to use, in the middle of the boss fight you may not have time to bring out the Bow. One could make the same arguement in just about every game since AlttP that there were redundant items.

I'll agree that some are redundant. I'll say that I find the beetle annoying and I don't see why they designed sections of the game around it. I like the whip though. I think the slingshot and the arrows though do offer advantages and disadvantages though.

We'll see but the items could require a lot more strategy.

No, can't agree with this. After OoT the slingshit has become a redundant item.

The series followers has been claiming for fundamental changes to the formula for years. Well one of the changes needed is to just concentrate in the best items and exploit their full potentials. Not dilute the game with so many items with minimal use.

Regarding maps: Maybe they could import the system used in the DS Zeldas. Let you make annotations in the map and not signal every chest when you find the compass.
The slingshot is a lot more useful in this game than any other game. The slingshot is easy to use and uses pointer controls. Meanwhile the bow & arrow goes into first person, much slower and works like the archery minigame in Wii Sports Resort.

A little OT, but in lieu of Skyward Sword...WHERE is our Wii-release of Wind Waker, Nintendo?!?
besides motion controls, what would be the point of such a port?

Its a good think isn't released yet. They could release the complete version of Wind Waker after Skyward Sword and take advantage of of different aspects of the technology, specificaly, Wii Motion plus. Wii motion plus its a perfect fit for Wind Waker for obvious reasons.

With you on this one, the beetle looks way to silly even for fantasy game like this one.

Well that's a by design excuse. Nintendo could easily opted to make the slingshot function exaclty like the bow and it would make sense, since both weapons propel projectiles by elasticity.

EDIT: Also check:

In SS you still can use pointer controls for the bow: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4-Z3qfCQqc&feature=relmfu
You still have to use the nunchuk to zoom in. though.
Props to Dascu.

Hey man, Wii could use every good game it can get. Add to that the bigger installed base (compared to GC) and that the game concept matches the system perfectly and it makes a lot of sense. Now if this would happen is another history entirely.

That was my point ;)
Of course, under the assumption that said dungeons were effectively reused (pretty likely imho).

Thats like wanting a Metroid game where at then end the protagonist takes the helmet off to reveal a Metroid head...not just that but a male Metroid.

I liked the NES manual calling Samus a he...other M would have been more interesting if it had Samus pretending to be a man...(oh god I've mentioned the M word with regards to Metroid...)

No you are confusing yourself here. Let me clear this up, Zelda was the wolf in Twilight Princess.
