Zero Time Dilemma 3DS/Vita/Steam video comparison

Is there some function to import saves from one platform to the next? If so, I can understand the 3DS people. Otherwise it seems like some sort of Stockholm syndrome to keep playing it on the weakest platform, with a horrible, horrible screen.

Nope. The games are all their own saves and such. But in VLR the 3DS version had a couple of advantages, like note-taking, and navigation in general (even though the awful audio compression and CG quality made it super difficult for me to enjoy), so I suppose it's more the people who enjoyed those features in VLR wanting ZTD to have them. From the Polygon video, it looks like they've significantly improved the controls on the Vita version of ZTD from VLR though, so the 3DS controls don't seem too special anymore. Plus I imagine it'd be nice to have the 3 games line up nicely, and not have a taller Vita case breaking the pattern.

I was going to go Vita after seeing these videos (I like my Visual Novels on the go), but... are there stock issues in Europe?

It looks like it's currently unavailable on Amazon.co.uk (both the 3DS and Vita versions) and the videogame store chain here in Belgium (Gamemania) still hasn't put it up for preorder, which makes me think they may not even sell it at all, considering it releases in 10 days. Steam it is then, I guess?

Edit: Nevermind, just read that it's digital only in Europe...

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's digital only in Europe. RSG aren't handling it this time, it's Aksys, and they're based in NA making physical publishing a little tougher. At least this time it'll have dual audio in Europe though.

Thanks, guess I missed this news.

I love how Eric looks at Zero in shock with everyone else while still having his arms up from whatever he was doing just before Zero appears.

Love the vibe of the clip too. The tension and sense of mystery/confusion is still as strong as ever.

I'm team #redcoin by the way, even though it's probably a choice you can't win since I'm pretty sure Zero says he'll let them all go if they guess the correct color of the coin LOL.

is there any reason why the 3ds version looks worse than VLR?
couldn't they just recycle the old engine and character models? -_-

I never had any problem with the note taking part in VLR with the Vita. I actually liked having 3 colors to organize my notes. The game was 10/10.

Besides, those capacitive styli are cheap to get. It's just for notes after all, I'm not going to do a Picasso painting with it.

Can you spoiler that last part, I avoided the translation because I didn't want to know what he said.

For some reason I didn't know the game was coming out on Steam. And looking at the 3DS version, I guess that's a blessing.

Vita ver. looking good.

I got 999 on DS, since that's the only platform it was available for.
I got VLR on Vita, since that was the better version.
I'm getting this on PC, since that's the best version.

The idea of some sort of franchise based "platform loyalty" is entirely foreign to me. I mean, why?

I completely agree. I know people explained why the are getting it on 3ds when they can get it on steam, but it's still a little odd. But the vita version looks pretty solid, but I'm going pc for the 60fps and higher resolutions.

It can be a type of OCD, and if the differences aren't significant or the game was designed around a platform then the other versions are more "make it nicer" than that version being "make it worse so it can work." It's part of why I'm OK going with slightly worse versions of a game on PS3/360 in the name of platform consistency, considered it kind of irrelevant for many Kickstarters where there's the choice, and in the case of VLR it looked more like an upgraded 3DS game on Vita, but here with missing shaders and overall quality this is looking a lot more like a Vita intended game with 3DS being the pared down port. PC would be nice but I doubt I'll lose too much if any of the intended quality and I'd like to have portability as things are, and there's no watch or even physical edition for PC. And I'll probably get the whole thing via Steam sales there in the end anyway.

This series is also unique in our minds due to the 999 twist with the DS, but VLR did nothing there and this is even dumping 3D it seems so... They're not really signaling they care this time.

I preordered on 3DS before the PC version was revealed. I want to keep my 3DS preorder because I want the watch. I'd also rather play this on a handheld and don't have a Vita, nor any interest in getting one.

I will probably double dip and get the Steam version too though.

Not all people can afford buying all platforms?
I'm perfectly fine with that, and it's easy enough to understand.

My post was specifically addressing the "I own the platforms, but I buy it on platform X since that's where the franchise 'belongs'" sentiment, expressed multiple times in this thread.

I have the current highest end MacBook Pro with discrete GPU available today. I hope it can run it well. The specs seem abnormally high on Steam. If not, my desktop will be able to run it for sure. But I'd much rather have it with me to play between classes.

At least the fans of these games aren't feeling sick to their stomach when other platforms get the game as well. Everyone's just happy that more people get to play it and the previous games.

To be fair, the game looks bad on all platforms anyway. It's not like graphics are a big part of it.

I think its perfectly understandable that someone can pick the 3DS version if they prefer the form factor or even if it's favorite platform to game on. The second screen is a nice convenience that fits the game well, at least.

It also make sense for people who only keep a limited number of hardware. What if the person contemplates the possibility of selling or giving away the platform he doesn't like all that much in the future? It makes sense to try to keep the most games on the platform you know you are not getting rid of.

I'll get on Vita, even though I could play it on Steam, simply because I plan on playing it in bed.

Does it really matter in the end? This is such a weird discussion.

I didn't have a Vita when I pre-ordered the 3DS limited watch bonus. Now I really wish I got a Vita copy, instead... not sure if the watch is worth it, to be honest.

The 3DS version doesn't look worse to me...just different. Like there will be a difference in clarity sure but I'm mainly talking about the color scheme.

(Maybe they just want to eBay the watch for some cost reduction?)

You know what? I admit defeat. I've got nothing. At this point I feel like some people are saying "if you don't play this on Steam, you're doing it wrong". If the 3DS version is so horrible that everyone is downright offended by me and others getting it, then sure, I'll play the Steam version first. I'll cancel my Amazon pre-order and play it on PC.

I picked up VLR on the 3DS when it came out. I never played it and finally just sold it. Then, about a month later, it went on sale on the 3DS eShop for $11.99, so I picked it up. Since I still have yet to play it, I think I'm going to wait on this one. Maybe by the time I'm finally ready to play it, it will be cheap (digitally).

Steam is the winner for me. Updating the Vita is a major pain in the ass in South Africa. At least I can download the PC version bit by bit.
