PAL Charts - Week 33, 2014

Gamasutra.
Sorted by YTD 2014

Edit: Found an error in the graphs, hopefully now fixed.

Because someone always asks, these are estimated because the original data from which it is computed is imprecise. That said, I'm willing to bet this is still pretty damn good.

Quick facts:
YTD XBO 2013: 1.16 million units
YTD PS4 2013: 1.33 million units

YTD XBO 2014: 1.57 million units
YTD PS4 2014: 1.84 million units

LTD XBO: 2.73 million units
LTD PS4: 3.17 million units

(LTD PS4)/(LTD XBO) = 1.16, i.e. PS4 has a 16% lead in software units. Put another way, For every 6 units of software that the XBO sells, the PS4 sells 7 units. But, that's all retail, and we don't know what the digital marketplace looks like.

The inverse of the US Tie Ratio;

PS4: 2.7
XB1: 3.2

That's higher than the 4% lead in software units PS4 has in the US.

If UK had similar Tie Ratios to the US then that would result in 850k XB1 and 1.17m PS4. However US doesn't include bundled software, so UK Tie Ratios are probably higher (resulting in lower hardware totals).

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
About PS4 hardware LTD...no update so far about it reaching a million, so, unless anything changes in the next hours, it'd be 38 weeks before hitting a million. Crossing streams with Wii possibly happening.

In the case

PS4 first 5 weeks (2013) - 530,000
PS4 subsequent 33 weeks (2014) - 470,000 / < 470,000 ---> 14,242 / < 14,242 per week (average)

The inverse of the US Tie Ratio;

PS4: 2.7
XB1: 3.2

Which if similar in the UK would result in 850k XB1 and 1.17m PS4.

I think the tie ratio will be higher here for both because of bundled games - FIFA, Forza and Titanfall on XB1; Knack, Killzone, Infamous and Watchdogs on PS4.

Or it's happened and in the new era of restricted data no one released the information...

When u see PSvita sales perform even worst that old classic DS, u know that thing is barely alive. T_T

Wow PS4 software for August will be nearly that of the whole of Julys based on just TLoU alone. July was a pretty low month for new releases on current gen. Thank goodness there was Destiny.

Don't get me wrong -> I really really like Piranha Bytes. But the last two games..... -_-
I liked Risen but all the bad press Risen 2 got made me skip that one. Really tempted to pick up Risen 3 now to bathe in Piranha Byte nostalgia.

I never expected Tomodachi to have such legs.

I agree but after mindcraft it's become my kids fav game. The fact they could take the Miis from our Wii and put it in the game was a huge deal to them. It seems though that my wife's mii dumped mine. lol

You know if it actually happened? But why starting closing acces to basic datas like this? It has never been that in the last gens. Heck, last Holiday we got an update about 3DS reaching 2 millions...mere months ago. It's a good thing to share, especially if PS4 did that faster than Wii: it'd be the fastest home console to do that. Why.

I don't know. My new employer doesn't see the value of subscribing to all of this data for a sector we think is on its way down. I am just pointing out that the absence of information is not confirmation one way or the other. A lot of the time it will be the companies themselves that leak the information to MCV or Eurogamer. At this time it feels like Sony are trying to concentrate on the global picture with the 10m figure rather than any single country.

When was the last time MCV posted figures that they obtained directly from Chart-Track? It seems to me that ended long ago, and MCV now has to rely on "retail sources" (ie retailers leaking Chart-Track data which they get in return for supplying Chart-Track with their data).

It's the evolution of Chart-Track, with numbers becoming more and more secretive over time.

A short timeline;

1984: Argus Specialist Publications contract Gallup (who at the time compiled the official UK music charts) to compile national software charts for their trade magazine "Computer & Software Retailing", these were also published in their consumer magazine "Home Computing Weekly" (see here for the first chart published there). After "Computer & Software Retailing" closes down in 1985 fellow trade magazine "Microscope" takes over publishing the charts. They later switch to "Computer Trade Weekly" (CTW) the long running trade magazine who continued to publish the charts until their demise in 2002.

1989: ELSPA formed, not long after they contract Gallup to compile the charts for them, ELSPA now own the copyright of the data (as opposed to the various magazines who previously owned it).

1996: Gallup decide that video & computer game sales tracking is not a core business (they lost the official UK music charts several years earlier), faced with the possibility of redundancy (Gallup's UK staff), and no charts (ELSPA), ELSPA helps to fund a management buyout of Gallups' video game tracking service. ELSPA now own shares in the new company "Chart-Track", as do the former Gallup management. For the next decade Chart-Track/ELSPA numbers are regularly published in the specialist press (see this example from CTW).

1998: MCV debuts

2002: RIP CTW, the market isn't big enough for two trade magazines, but CTW is incorporated into MCV (which was created by former CTW staff). No biggie, still getting plenty of numbers.

2008: GfK aquires a 55% controlling stake in Chart-Track, ELSPA still own 45%. Hmm... management no longer own any of the business, and we're really not getting so many numbers now, but still records and milestones at least.

2010: ELSPA becomes UKIE ... ELSPA Sales Awards end , as do monthly Top 10 numbers :(

2012: UKIE sells all of it's remaining shares to GfK ... Uuugh ... what numbers have we (or MCV) had directly from Chart-Track since?

So yeah, unless the manufacturer announces themselves (note, head of Sony Poland recently said they don't give out regional numbers ... have Sony announced any PS4 numbers for any specific country yet?), or MCV get a leak off of a retailer then I don't think that we can any longer rely on milestones being announced.

Edit: As an addendum to that, take a look at what a fiasco it was to find out something as basic as launch numbers (something even the mainstream media are interested in) this gen. I still don't think we ever got official numbers for all consoles.

Mmmh...didn't know the story behind Chart-Track. Thanks!

Eh, at this point, I feel I have to be cautious every time I post about the "race to 1 million" thing, because it's not that implausible that PS4 already reached 1 million, but Sony, for whatever reason, decided to not spill out the number.

To be honest, that seems strange to me. Yes, Sony is thinking more about the global number than what's happening in each country. But...if PS4 obtained to reach 1 million during last weeks, it would have been a faster million seller than Wii, which is still (for now, since we have no infos about PS4) the quickest home console to reach 1 million of installed base in UK. I think that would certainly be something to be proud of, to announce as a triumph through a PR / a specific article from MCV or Eurogamer or whatever other source.

But, since there's a definite reason to think that PS4 could have already surpassed the million in UK but they didn't announce it, I suppose whenever I'll post the "race to 1 million" comparison, I'll put a big disclaimer explaining this.

Again, thanks. :)

Well, I would still expect MCV to find out when PS4 hits 1m, but that depends on how much the current staff consider that notable (maybe not so much if it isn't a record). My post was more pointing out how much data we've been losing from Chart-Track over the years. Some more recent example of numbers we've lost.

RIP ELSPA Sales Awards (2010)
RIP Monthly Top 10 numbers (2010)
RIP Hardware launch numbers (2011)
RIP Weekly platform splits (2013)
RIP Hardware milestones?

well the one thing they wanted to get out there was they sold 10 million worldwide. i honestly don't think they are going to boast regional sales going forward.

Have you guys been following the price fall on amazon? Noticed it last week. Prices are falling. Games are now £40 on amazon UK. This fall will be interesting

It's not a fair comparison. DS is still owned by millions of kids; it has a huge line-up of evergreen games. For example, DS has a lot of Pokémon games, which tend to sell over time; DS also got a Frozen game, which occasionally appeared in the Top 40. This is just the legacy of one of the best-selling hardwares in UK.

IIRC, today's a Bank Holiday in UK, so we shouldn't have charts from there today (tomorrow we'll have them).

Tomodachi's insane in France. Not that it's that lower elsewhere, but it's more insane there :lol

Yup the odd game costs £45 but the majority have been reduced to £40 I hope they do not raise the prices again when the holiday season is over.

I didn't know.. .thanks.

Seems like PS4 is sold out in Amazon UK.

Odd

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BE4HOIM/

Temporarily out of stock. Order now and we'll deliver when available. We'll e-mail you with an estimated delivery date as soon as we have more information. Your credit card will not be charged until we ship the item.

I wonder if that suggests anything. Perhaps Amazon UK didn't order more of the regular PS4 SKU because of the incoming Destiny SKU?

Wait Amazon had the PS4 up for 329 GBP? So 20 GBP under MSRP for UK?

Well Destiny SKU is not open for preorder anymore too...

Edit

A friend opened a thread about the drop 3 days ago in a forum I'm member (http://vizioneck.com/forum/index.php?topic=692)... so at least from Friday it is the new price.

Edit 2 - I found when the drop happened.
