Weekly european hardware sales [Wii/360/PS3] CW 1 - CW 42 / 08

Thx to BKK2 @ VGChartzzzz for the great work (the source ist not VGC, it's Nintendo, but he did the pixel counting)

So let's start, this chart is from Nintendos Financial Results Briefing.

As for Europe, just counting the population of countries where Nintendo has been directly marketing its products through its subsidiaries or offices amounts to more than 300million people, and when we look at the entire EU, there are more than 450million people.
A quote from their briefing, so this chart should contain all major european markets, probably this countries:

Population: ~ 330.000.000
Benelux
France
Germany
Italy
Ireland
Spain
UK

Ok, here are the numbers for 2008:

2008 really is the year of the PS3 (in Europe)....

...but Wii has totally stolen it's thunder.

PS3 + 360: 3,752,000
Wii: 4,754,000

Wii outselling the HD consoles combined by over a million in 2008. Wow.

Ok, here's the monthly comparison between US, Europe and Japan for every system.

I've used the NPD - system (4-4-5), but January is a 5-weeks-week for Japan and Europe.

Holy shit @ Wii outselling the HD consoles combined by more then 3 million.. (and the holidays haven't even started)

Xbox360 is doing poorly. It even got outsold in America by the PS3 and the Wii is steamrolling it by outselling it more then 3 times worldwide.

Didnt think that the stationary game consoles had so low numbers in Japan, against the rest of the world.

Units sold 2008

Europa 8.1M
USA 9.5M
Japan 3.1M

Yes the 360 has done poorly so far this year, but with the price cuts it's cutting the leads in all three territories, and will likely finish the year up in the US, close in Europe and down (but perhaps not down as much in Japan). Still with the 360's lead I imagine Sony is not thrilled to be catching up so slowly.

Japan only has 120 million people. Though we can't deny that the console market in Europe is growing.

Was doing poorly. The last 4 weeks in Europe the 360 outsold the PS3 by 50,000 (264,000 to 214,000). In the last 4 weeks in Japan the 360 outsold the PS3 by 10,112 (31,734 to 21,622).

It'll be interesting to see what sales are for the xbox 360 and ps3 are over Christmas in Europe.
Divide Wii's holiday numbers by 2 and you approximately have it.

So in both Japan in Europe the Wii has a higher LTD than PS3 and Xbox 360 combined! It also means that this is the case worldwide if we count US sales into it.

The 'H' stands for hentai.
Adding European numbers to the mix it makes it much more obvious who is the leader this gen (as if we didn't know already)

The PS3 is putting up more of a fight than I anticipated, but the numbers should be even by the end of this year. That is pretty good for 2nd place and 3rd place consoles.

Do we have any of these charts for older time periods? I'm sure I've seen Nintendo use them before but I don't recall anyone doing the work to transfer them into weekly sales.

Would be very interesting to have a comparison of last year vs this one for instance.

I combined weekly Media Create, NPD and these European numbers into a couple of charts:

Those last two really drive it home.

Maybe you should change the thread title to include the worldwide stuff Captain Smoker. This thread is more than it seems on the outside.

Amazing work Captain Smoker and Mojo, those charts really DO paint a clear picture. I think the most amazing point to me is that, barring the very beginning of 2008 when Wii seemed to have a severe drop off (presumably sold out in December and it took time to replenish stock? Dunno) the PS3/360's HIGH point of sales YTD in Europe was similar/extremely close to the Wii's LOW point in sales YTD. Just total domination.

What is that short term spike around week 24 for the PS3 caused by?

[Edit - ahhh... that's MGS4 isn't it?]
Yeah, a lot of that bump is from the Japan MGS4 launch.

Thanks to the 360 price drope and a RPG released in Japan, with no decent new Japanese titles in PS3, I think. Now Last Remnant is coming to Japan, but also is going to be released LBP and the 160GB PS3 SKU. So who knows what is going to happen in Europe and Japan now.

Yes. :)

But I need to calculate the numbers. :)

But I think that older charts are just for UK, Germany and France:

"The situation for home console hardware is similar in Europe. As the PS3 price cut was made only two weeks ago, I wanted to show you the most recent data we have. So, we have gathered data through last week in the UK, France and Germany, where independent research companies are quick to gather sell-through results."

Wow..

This gen is offically over
as far as predicting number one is concerned.

The Wii has left a trail of confused and bruised mega-corps... EA, Ubi get a clue...

Ok, here are the numbers for the last year statistics:

I wonder if Nintendo will come out on stage and do a Sony. :)

If you mean by dominating next gen with Wii 2 the same way the Playstation 2 was, then it will likely happen.

Arrogance takes two generations, not one
