If you mean by dominating next gen with Wii 2 the same way the Playstation 2 was, then it will likely happen.

Arrogance takes two generations, not one

^__^
Nintendo had plenty of SONY moments with Virtua Boy, N64, and Cube. And yes, it did take two generations (NES and Super Nintendo) to get there.

I was specifically looking for a "The battle for first place is over..." quote. :)

Ok, here's the monthly comparison between US, Europe and Japan for every system.

Cool! I have a lot of work to do to update my worldwide estimates with this new data next week. At initial glance, it looks like I'm pretty close for Wii/PS3 in total YTD (probably need to adjust individual months, though) but was underestimating 360's improvements this year.

Thanks, Captain Smoker! :)

Captain Smoker,

I noticed something odd about your X360 total.

When I input the monthly figure into spreadsheet, the YTD 2008 total I got is 1,417,000 , which is different than yours (1.556.000).

I think you are using the Week 1 - 42 as your total figure, while the monthly figure should use week 1 - 40 as total (since Jan to Sep only have 40 weeks, with Jan, March, June and September 08 having 5 weeks). Week 1 - 40 total is 1,417,000, while week 1 - 42 is 1,556,000. Since you are using Week 1 - 40 total for Wii and PS3 total, I think you should be consistent and also use Week 1 - 40 in your X360 total.

It is a pity that even with the significant price cut, X360 still didn't manage to cross streams in Europe. This doesn't bode well for X360 NPD Oct # (assuming Europe and US have similar result, which might not be the case).

Seems that VGC data is very different from the Nintendo's source. Any thoughs on why this happen (other than the fact that VGC ended on Oct 18, while Nintendo ended on Oct 19)

Code:
Week 42, Nintendo vs VGC :
X360 : 67,000 vs 73,318 (9% over)
PS3 : 52,000 vs 80,216 (50% over)
Wii : 117,000 vs 169,874 (45% over)

Such a big difference for PS3 and Wii is puzzling, to say the least.

I don't really want to defend that chartz site, but countries like Australia, Eastern Europe and all other countries in the world are included in those numbers. Doesn't make them any better though.

You're right, thx, I've selected too much cells in Excel. ^^

I've added Canada to the worldwide overview, but I don't have numbers for August and September.

Well, if what you said is the cause (VGC others have more countries than Nintendo's others), I am really surprised that X360 is only 9% under, unlike PS3 and Wii which are around 50% under. If X360 is around 40% under, your explanation could be the logical explanation.

What is funny is that the original pixel counter come from VGC, and it helped prove that VGC own data is flawed. VGC debunked by VGC member :D

Psychotext said:
Can't be quoted enough, so I'm going to quote it three times....
Because VGC make up their numbers.

Lol. I think the truth lies somewhere between "totally making up their numbers" and "totally accurate representative data alternative for Gfk". I wonder if VGC will do one of their world famous "change our data without notice" action using Nintendo's graph :D.

So the European and American market is about the same size, that's interesting.
Actually the home console market is a bit smaller (-16% in units), but the handheld market is bigger by just enough to make up for it if you sum them up.

Europe sure is a growing market, it will be interesting to see just how big it can become the next 5-10 years.

The European market used to be treated like shit with games being released years after US/Japan, i don't think that will be the case much longer.

Cool. But where do Nintendo get the numbers? Is it charttrack-numbers originally?
where don't they get them should be the qustion you ask.
They have access to Chart-Track, GfK, retailers, distributors and many more...... i think they also use V.G.Charts!

Nintendo gets their internal figures for their own systems directly from retailers. i.e. Their internal figures are more accurate than NPD, MC, Famitsu, GfK, Chart-Track, etc.

I very much doubt Nintendo does their own tracking of the sales of other companies (other than at a most basic level) when people like Chart Track / GFK can do it for them more cheaply, and more accurately.

Yeah. I was just referring to their own system sales. :)

I'll try to comment on this later, after I get an article finished on this stuff but you should pay careful attention to Nintendo's UK+DE+FR+ES YTD sales graph and the monthly/YTD figures Captain Smoker has pulled together. There appears to be an important multiplier (or more than one, I'm not sure yet).

I can't believe you think I was serious about them using VGC.
You're in need of that tag, not me. Sarcasm. Look it up one day.

Dunno if you guys think it's worth its own thread. If so, I'll make one, but it's a busy day for me so... Someone else feels its worth it, go for it.

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3841/the_mushroom_growth_plan_inside_.php

Note that Nintendo appears to be multiplying UK+DE+FR+ES sales by 1.4 (or 1.5) to get the full European sales. This is interesting, esp. given that they say in the handheld portion of their presentation that those markets represent 75-80% of the European market.

Will check back later, esp. to see if you guys found something I messed up.

Found it interesting that the UK and France are still by far the biggest players in Europe for hardware sales.

Figures in the past have always hinted at the UK making up around 30% of the European total but it's interesting to see it apply for real... at least where the Wii is concerned.

I only showed tie ratios at the 23-month mark, but I have a table for the first 23 months of each console. For the most part, the data I have from press reports jibe very well with the figures I computed from Nintendo's slides. This can be broken down as first-vs-third as you can see with my graph showing 2008 tie ratio by month for Wii.

Nintendo seems to multiply the UK+DE+FR+ES data by 1.35 to get its own complete Euro figures. The Xbox 360 and PS3 data are each multiplied by 1.5 to get full Euro data. I have no idea why the discrepancy, except that Nintendo may be 'correcting' the retail tracker data by taking into account its own shipment data.

I don't recall if it made it into the article, but for the Wii the category of "other America" (i.e. Americas without U.S.) appears to be pretty uniformly 20% of the full Americas market, for the data I have available. Put another way, Wii sales in all of the American contents appears to be 125% of the U.S. figure.

These are the kinds of things I found out going through the slides, and I wasn't able to do everything I wanted because of time constraints. They really are a treasure trove of information.
