IGN: GTA Chinatown Wars Hands On

Yet another gaming article confuses "cel-shading" with "black outlines."

More on topic, game looks fairly promising. I was a fan of the GTA series since the first game, so the slight throwback nature of this one is pretty cool.

The game will feature an assortment of original tracks and licensed songs, but anything licensed will be "instrumentals" and not the actual tunes.

that's a bit lame

here are some cool touches to driving, like the extra boost in speed that you earn by spinning donuts before taking off in a straight line

it's cool that they are putting that in. It was nice in Midnight Club.

Hats off to Rockstar Leeds . . . they've done a great job bringing the GTA: Liberty City Stories and GTA: Vice City Stories to the PSP. Now it looks like they doing a great job creating a new GTA game for the DS.

To their credit though

" Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars employs an almost "cel-shaded" look to the in-game graphics, where the buildings, cars, pedestrians and streets are emphasized with hard black outlines"

Almost cel-shaded.

Sounds to me like they understand it.

I've seen this picky point brought up more lately but the problem is that there's no widespread alternative terminology for the shaders which are used for the "cartoon line" or comic book effect. cel-shading is the term that was popularized. When you say "cel-shading" everyone understands how the polygons will look as the animate. Even if literal, binary shaded and sharp solid color shading is not used /within/ each polygon surface.

At this point the effect has diverged from the original, rigidly cartoon-like games to pioneer it; games use it for everything from colored pencil to watercolor effects. But the public knows it as "cel-shading".

Hopefully gameplay makes up for the graphics. It'd be awesome if you could go into tanks and helicopters.

Boo at people scoffing at Chinatown Wars and the DS.

Did you people never play GTA2? Multiplayer GTA2? The over-the-top perspective GTA games are still a huge amount of fun, especially in multiplayer. GTA doesn’t need a 3rd person camera to be enjoyable.

I’m really looking forward to Chinatown Wars and think it looks fantastic. If it brings back the same kind of joy I got out of GTA2 then I say bring it on.

We need some video or someone needs to release screens in DS resolution. Of course it'll look like shit if you blow these shots up

They really are an amazing team. Max Payne GBA was a huge achievement too.

If Rockstar management had any sense, they'd put Leeds to work on a ground up Wii GTA asap.

Looks cool I think, reminds me of the original PC GTA. Seeing as for some strange reason I prefer the 2D overhead gameplay to the newer 3D gameplay I'm looking forward to it.

Looking at Leeds site... I didn't know they did Table Tennis Wii!? Now I'll be shocked if they don't have a GTA Wii in the wings...

It's not going to be a 2D overhead gameplay though, you know that right?

Btw, this game is going to kick ass.

Huang's locked in the back seat of the car as it's dumped into the river, and here is where the game begins -- players are introduced to the extravagant touch-screen implementation right from the start as they'll have to whip out the stylus and shatter the windshield to escape the rushing waters as the vehicle sinks to the bottom of the river.

...

And when you get to a toll booth you can choose to simply bypass them illegally, or pay by tossing coins into the basket by using the touch-screen, dropping the coins in with your stylus.

...

They've even turned making Molotov cocktails into a mini-game: drive up to a gas pump and start filling bottles to the brim. Each cocktail you make in the allotted time is added to your inventory, which can then be used against the bad guys by throwing them using the touch-screen: hold the stylus on the "Molotov Cocktail" icon, and slide it around as if you were manipulating an analog stick on a console controller. You'll see a throwing arch attached to your character that grows and shrinks in relation to where your stylus is on the icon.

This bothers me a lot more than the rather ugly graphics (there just isn't quite enough resolution and most of those shots look pixelated and jumbled as a result). Trying to cram pointless "innovative" controls has been a plague this generation whether it's waggle on the Wii, tilting on the PS3 or unnecessary touch-screen and blowing antics on the DS it's almost always a lame, unpleasant afterthought. Sometimes it works (Kirby: Canvas Curse, The World Ends With You), but a lot of the times it feels like they just threw it in because they could or because the console-maker wants it to be highlighted.

I seriously doubt that any of these are going to add anything of value to the gameplay.

At the same time there are some interesting sounding missions and ideas on display here, but also a number of bad ones. It'll be interesting to see how it ends up turning out. I wasn't really excited for it before and now it's been moved to... well, still not really excited. It could go either way. I guess I'll just need to wait until the reviews come in.

Speaking for myself, I just couldn't get into the top down GTA games but I loved GTA3. I doubt I would like this game either.

That’s fair, I just find that this title is getting a lot of hate from people who either don’t like the over-the-top view games, or have never played them in the first place. A lot of people, myself included, still love the style and gameplay of the likes of GTA and GTA2, and are thus quite impressed with how this looks.

A friend of mine, for example, first got into GTA with GTA3. As a result he scoffs at the concept of CW, unable to comprehend how an over-the-top GTA game could be ‘fun’.

I havn't been paying too close attention but the pictures look like 2D overhead gameplay to me unless I'm missing something. However, if I am missing something don't bother to write out a few words telling me what it is or anything :p.

This looks horrifying. I don't have much hope for the gameplay either after GTA4.

...will still probably end up buying it though :(

more impressions from CHUD:

One thing that's immediately clear is how fantastic the controls are. The cars handle just like you'd expect from a GTA and it's incredibly easy to pull off 180s, quick turns, and even drivebys. Each car handles differently- from cars to trucks to motorcycles to limos... even boats and helicopters. The overhead perspective works perfectly to show you the world around you, something that could have been really tricky on the small DS screen. The stylized graphics may look a little strange- pedestrians appear huge next to cars- but it's all there to make things easier to see.

"fantastic controls" and "just like you'd expect from a gta" seem like contradictions to me, but for fans of the series, yay?

I don't think it looks to bad really, I think it'll be one of those games that will look alot better in motion tbh.
