Many tech demos end in tears. Square Enix’s moving demo during the keynote at Microsoft’s BUILD 2015 developer conference this week might be the first where that’s exactly the point.

In collaboration with NVIDIA and Microsoft, Square Enix – maker of the Final Fantasy series of video games – stunned the BUILD audience with a research project called WITCH CHAPTER 0 [cry].

The project portrays human crying — considered one of the most difficult emotions to recreate digitally — at a level of quality never seen before with a real-time, computer-generated character.

It’s a demo that may come to represent a milestone in an industry that has long-struggled to cross the “uncanny valley.”

SQUARE ENIX Unveils Real-Time CG Tech Demo Using DirectX 12 at Microsoft Build
World’s Highest Quality Real-Time CG Created with Cutting-Edge Technology

SAN FRANCISCO (April 30, 2015) – Square Enix Co., Ltd. (Square Enix) today announced “WITCH CHAPTER 0 [cry],” a real-time tech demo that utilizes DirectX 12, a Windows10 based new generation API, at the Microsoft Build Developer Conference.

As a part of a research project that studies a variety of next generation technologies, Square Enix conducted extensive research on real-time CG technology utilizing DirectX 12 in collaboration with Microsoft and NVIDIA Corporation. Revealed today as a technology demonstration titled, WITCH CHAPTER 0 [cry], the results of this research will be incorporated into Square Enix’s LUMINOUS STUDIO engine, and is intended for use in future game development.

WITCH CHAPTER 0 [cry], has achieved some of the world’s highest-level quality of real-time CG. It portrays the human emotion of crying-- one of the most difficult representations for existing real-time CG technology. The emotion is displayed in a level of quality which has never been seen before with a real-time CG animated character teemed with life.

WITCH CHAPTER 0 [cry] was created mainly by the developers of AGNI'S PHILOSOPHY – FINAL FANTASY REALTIME TECH DEMO, a tech demo for LUMINOUS STUDIO revealed in June 2012. Square Enix research enabled the real-time CG to feature even more refined graphics and improved processing capabilities in WITCH CHAPTER 0 [cry].

“Our team has always pursued cutting-edge pre-rendered and real-time CG,” commented Hajime Tabata, head of the next-generation technology research project and Division Executive of Business Division II of Square Enix Co., Ltd. “As a part of the technical development, we created this demo using world-class, real-time CG technology with generous support from leading-edge software and hardware providers – Microsoft’s Windows10/DirectX 12 and NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX. The efforts from this project will power future game development as well as FINAL FANTASY XV, currently a work in progress.”

“Square Enix is working on this next-generation research project as a showcase for our technology and creativity which will lead the future of Square Enix,” said Yosuke Matsuda, president and representative director of Square Enix Co., Ltd. “The results will be used to further advance the quality and technical expertise of our games. We will continue to pursue this research on cutting-edge technologies including high-end real-time graphics using the innovative DirectX 12.”

Furthermore, this tech demo was made possible by using NVIDIA GeForce GTX TITAN X-4-way SLI PC.

“We've designed DirectX 12 to deliver industry leading performance across the widest range of form factors and graphic cards,” said Steven Guggenheimer, corporate vice president and chief evangelist at Microsoft. “The work Square Enix is doing plays a valuable role in exhibiting the potential of DirectX 12 to enable even greater innovation and optimized game performance.”

“WITCH CHAPTER 0 [cry] features the most ambitious real-time, cinematic-quality graphics ever undertaken,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO, NVIDIA. “Square Enix’s achievement is nothing short of breathtaking. I am delighted that their amazing team turned to the NVIDIA GAMEWORKS EFFECTS STUDIO to help bring WITCH CHAPTER 0 [cry] to life. This is a preview of the beauty and artistry of video games to come.”

Square Enix will continue to drive research and development of new technologies in game development and to provide the world’s highest quality entertainment content to consumers.

The WITCH CHAPTER 0 [cry] demo video showcased at the Microsoft Build Developer Conference can be viewed here: http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/Build/2015/KEY02

The WITCH CHAPTER 0 [cry] will also be showcased at “de:code 2015,” a developer conference hosted by Microsoft Japan, to take place May 26-27 in Tokyo, Japan.

I really hope some aspect of Agni's philosophy winds up showing in the future of the series. Even if it was just a tech demo, it had a very cool aesthetic and setting.

Is that scene new? I don't remember it.

They use it to try, test, and prove out new technologies for their engine.

I don't recall the female character looking like that - must be new.

Maybe Agni's Philosophy is the next FF after XV. :0

The next major showing for FFXV is at Gamescom right? I wonder if they'll announce a PC version given it's pretty heavily a PC show and they're bothering to port the engine over to DirectX 12.

It is a whole new scene and there is even a chapter name. New game incoming?

Remember that the Luminous Engine interview revealed that FFXV is not the only game in development.
I'm kind of assuming they're making Final Fantasy XV-2 and Noctis Returns: Final Fantasy XV on the engine, though perhaps Final Fantasy XVI as well.

Square Enix, Microsoft, NVIDIA Point Way Through Uncanny Valley at Microsoft BUILD

Coined by pioneering roboticist Masahiro Mori nearly 50 years ago, the term describes the boundary where emotional realism in the digital world begins to blur with reality — and creates a sense of the strange, or even revulsion, in human observers.
Overcoming this sensation has been a stretch goal for computer-generated graphics for decades. It’s a task that’s even tougher when performed in real time.

WITCH CHAPTER 0 [cry] project, powered by Microsoft’s new DirectX 12 application programming interface (API) and NVIDIA GeForce graphics, points to a way through the uncanny valley.

Bringing more reality and depth to character expressions will better immerse players in stories during game-play, and deepen their connection to characters.

NVIDIA GameWorks Effects Studio and GeForce GTX graphics were among the next-generation technologies Square Enix put to use. Square Enix also conducted extensive research on real-time CG technology using DirectX 12. The results will be incorporated into Square Enix’s Luminous Studio engine.

The press release is out so I retitled the thread and added the PR to the OP.

DarkLordMalik has also added some additional updates, so I'm bumping this.

8 million polys? That seems like quite a lot for just one character. I can't imagine we'll be seeing that on PCs running at a reasonable speed, never mind consoles anytime soon. I can hardly load up an 8 million poly model in a rendering program on my 970GTX. This stuff is deff not something will be seeing on current gen consoles.

About how may polys was a character from the order?

Hum, i thought FFXV was already confirmed for PC.
It would be amazing if they port it, i mean, i can already imagine those 4k screenshots on the PC thread :D

So, this is the moment when a lot of people (and gaming sites) will ignore that this is just a demo and start speculate that this will become a game?

The fact they made a new scene with this Agni character almost screams the fact that they are definitely making some kind of game with her. I bet Square's e3 conference may actually reveal it.

This is like the third time they used the same universe for something. It wouldn't be too surprising if a game is happening

I will never stop believing.

"Business Division II"?

In 2013 Square Enix went back to their old structure of having a bunch of business divisions each being in charge of a set of franchises/project types. Kitase heads the first division, Tabata heads the second division, Hashimoto heads the third division, Yoshida heads the fifth division, etc. There are over a dozen, and some are dedicated towards mobile stuff.

Square Enix Japan used to be broken up into a lot of departments.

I think they've consolidated those and stopped marketing them, but this is presumably a leftover of that.

They consolidated those at one point, but then they went back to it again. The company can't really make up their minds. :p

"Another Fantasy Based on Reality"
Yeah, about that, I kinda want them to keep Agni's design and put her into a pure, high fantasy medieval setting instead of another mix and match. Her sorcery design will fit right in.

Turn-based, Hiroyuki Ito, FFXVI, bam.

Which division is being headed by Hiroyuki Ito?

Won't lie. Looks great.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is concept for FF16 (because they have to start on another FF15 releases, right?), and I love the look of Agni's Philosophy.

I'd still push for more high-fantasy, though, and less "fantasy based in reality".

Reality is boring. I live reality every day. The less of it I get in my Final Fantasy titles, the happier I'll be.

Maybe they've created "Agni's Philosophy" as an official placeholder theme for their tech demos, rather than get another generation of people asking about a FF7 remake.
