Microsoft announcing "Halo Legends" anime anthology at Comic-Con (post #173)

Ha ha ha, I cannot believe the TOEI one really does just look like Halo Ball Z :lol

I imagine 2 of these (Studio 4C and Bones ones) will be good, and the rest utter shit. The one in there that looks like generic anime with nothing linking it to Halo specifically made me roll my eyes.

Domino Theory

Crystal Dynamics
Shock and awe, I'm actually slowly gaining interest in Halo Legends. I'm interested to see what stories they tell in the Halo universe (with or without the Chief) and how well they tell them in these episodes, but I'm still skeptic. Just not as skeptic as before after seeing the Inside Xbox video.

Fixed. :D

Right yes. I sort of counted the 2 4C ones together. I will hate all the 3d ones though, because I don't really see the point in them. I may enjoy the TOEI one if it is just stupid and OTT enough to entertain and not just be completely dumb.

My point is I play Halo as a video game, not to watch anime. I want to see what 343 studios is working on game wise. I don't think my poist was that hard to comprehend.

Microsoft is positioning 343 Industries as the Halo equivalent of the Pokemon company, a division that will maintain and expand the bubbling popularity of Halo into other mediums. We can expect their products to be more in line with comics, toys, cartoons, cereal boxes, etc rather than with games.

While we can't rule out the possibility of a game, 343's primary job is to expand Halo to every form of entertainment possible.

What happened to the staff MS sniped from Gearbox? And Ryan Payton? Where are they working exactly within MS? Are they part of 343 now?

I've been wondering about that as well. It's been radio silence except for some rumors about the Jackson project.

Wow, the trailer looked shitty, the actions looked really generic, and the animations (from the few seconds we saw) looked rather bad.

The actions looked really generic? What does that even mean? Some of you people don't make any sense at all.

Are you really condoning piracy?? the same can be said for all digital media.

I think there is a thin blurry line in trying to distinguish between condoning digital piracy and understanding why some do it. It all comes down to a person's interpretation of value. I think the vast majority feel that the prices of game software is acceptable, and hence buy it, and you can apply that logic to movies as well. Despite there being a vast array of movies pirated out there, I don't really download them. I've come to appreciate actually having the physical box in my hand, opening the plastic sheet and watching it in the best quality available on my TV. And whether or not you agree with that decision, you'll be able to understand it at least. Having said that though, I don't think that same majority here would volunteer to have the legality of the music on their hard drive examined. I personally feel you should buy the song, but again, you can understand why someone may not share that opinion. Understanding that does not mean you are excusing the fact that they are committing piracy. Same way you can understand the concept of vengeance even though you do not condone it.

I worded my comment wrong and I can see how it implied something, but if I'm honest with you - if there is something I want and I see value in that, I buy it. Simple as that. If they are charging for it, I pass on because no cartoon/anime episode is worth a dollar in my opinion. Others who share that opinion will take it further. I've seen videos and episodes on the Marketplace, noticed they were not free and I lost interest. Yesterday on a Halo website I came across those same videos on the Marketplace being available there and I wasn't interested.

So are you basically saying in a fucking long winded way, that because it's animated you're just going to download it illegally and watch it with no intention at all of buying it? I just want to be clear here.

If you would like it bullet pointed..

  • I said that I worded my comment wrongly and understood how it came across
  • I then talked about piracy - the difference between excusing it and understanding why some do it. If a single paragraph talking about that is long and winded for you, then I don't know what to say to that.
  • If something interests me, especially video content, I buy it. If it doesn't then I'm not interested in it regardless if it's free and especially if they are charging for it.
  • Video game anime - if its not feature length - isn't worth a dollar to me because it will lack content and depth, and hence I am not interested in anyway. That means I have no intention of watching it legally or illegally.

Anime, in my experience, covers subjects from children starving in post WWII Tokyo, to divorced adults dreaming, to Robots developing feelings on alien worlds. It's not a subject, it's a wildly varying method of interpretation from a country.

Halo, is as wide as it is deep, fictionally and the "bald space marine" trope tends to be trotted out by folks with no interest in its fiction and a one-console, or rival-game agenda. Halo is not Shakespeare, but it has resonance and depth in its deeper fiction.

Can't say I'm excited for this. They're doing exactly what was done with Gotham Knight and that was horrendous.

Lol 1up!

Could you clarify if Origin from Studio 4C (the 30 min two parter) counts as 1 episode or 2 episodes?

Origin counts as one "episode" so there are actually eight "pieces"

Ah, that explains it. So basically Studio 4C is doing 3 short films worth of content, Origins (2 parter) and something else. Correct? And Production IG is doing 2 films, and the rest are doing 1 each? That would put the complete feature at about 2 hours? Pretty meaty content!

Although Halo anime is strange at first glance for me, given a totally different art style (as a Calvin & Hobbes manga would be), in the end the story is the crucial point, and Halo has more than enough content to be worked with.
The worst case scenario I can see is meh animation paired with great stories.

I can see it all now, Chief-san youth fillers in class 3-C with a big eyed anime chick love interest.
The Mamoru Oshii part definitely rings all the right bells though. Class dismissed.

Just read a pretty informative article on IGN.
Some of the ignorant reporting on the TOEI one on some (other) sites... makes my blood boil.
God forbid a journalist do some research before making some ridiculous false comments.

well not really...yet
The episode from Bones is truly for mech geeks. Aramaki, who did designs for Macross and Mospeada, designed the experimental power-armored suit showcased in this episode. A marine has been sent to a distant planet to destroy this powered armor, but when he arrives he finds the planet is still inhabited by humans who are under siege by the Covenant. The suit is their only hope for survival. So he disobeys orders and keeps that suit -- at least temporarily -- the help the civilians.

Ichiro Itano is responsible for the classic "missile dance" featured in the Macross Saga. In fact, it's called the Itano-Circus. One of his three disciples, Yasushi Muraki, directed this episode. He knew that Aramaki could make a brilliant design for the power armor and indeed he did. These two collaborators bring what is described as "mech porn" to the Halo universe. Expect a firefight like you've never before seen in any Halo game.

Yasushi Muraki is an animator who specializes in action effects animation. Generally for anime this means explosions, missile trails, ships and robots moving and fighting, etc. Non-human stuff. He has been an effects director for several Bones animation series for a while now, but this short should be his directorial debut.

A sample of the sort of animation Muraki has done so far: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdTG7Y4WJ-U&fmt=18

Still alive and kicking... And sharing an office with Frank!

So I spend most of the day looking over Frank's shoulder, checking out the anime dailies coming in from Japan, and teaching him naughty Japanese phrases he can use during meetings with his new best friends Aramaki, Oshii, and co.

Oh, and I'm directing a game that will take over all your lives.

Cool! Glad to hear you're doing fine. That Bones short better be fucking amazing btw, or I'm going to be really mad! :D

In the IGN article it says the writer of Cowboy Bebop is writing "The Package," but would that be Keiko Nobumoto (afaik she left the industry years ago and doesn't write anymore) or Dai Sato. Probably Dai Sato right?

Is this one of those animes where different studios make shorts and they're put into compilations like the Animatrix and the Batman one?

Spawnpoint Studios is still a viable unannounced MSFT entity here...?

Yes. Exactly like it. This one is comprised of just as much awesome though. (if not much more than previous compilations)

I have to say, you guys have pretty good taste in staff choices so far. Aside from my gripes with Aramaki (sorry, nothing personal against the guy, but I just think he gets involved with generic action stuff in general), there's a pretty good range in the shorts and the stories definitely sound unique enough. Can't wait to here more about the people involved in this.

Edit: Lol, Revelations triple hit combo? :p

Glad to hear there wasn't too much interference from 343. I hope this is well received, I want a film production company to get back on board with the movie. :(

Weird Aramaki fact: He completed Halo 3 on Legendary several times (skulls and all) before he ever got involved with or even heard of the project.

Posters we gave away at Comicon - they were massive, B1-sized collectibles and lots of folks got 'em signed by the creators. 56k die.
