Realistically, what can we expect? Last year's was kinda meh (overall) so would it be fair to expect a better showing this time around from Sony? Is it something that they themselves perhaps feel they must do?

If they do announce MvC4 then I really hope they show at least a sliver of gameplay. Really don't want a CG teaser and a "see you in one (or two) years sucker".

capcom cup is later in the day, literally the best venue to show gameplay that isn't the presser

Trailer at PSX and some gameplay at Capcom's Cup could be the way to go. They did that with SFV IIRC

I really hope Ellie is in it. Just because the Joel and Ellie story is done, doesn't mean her story is necessarily over.

Since it got delayed into January, and PSX doesn't only focus on the biggest-of-the-big like E3, I really would like to see them get Gravity Rush 2 in the conference.

And P5 and Nier (hopefully some FFVIIR/KH/DQXI/NNK2).
