UKIE Week 44 2011 UK Video Games Charts

EA’s ‘Battlefield 3’ holds off the competition to hold on at No1 despite a 54% drop in sales from last week. It’s the first time a Battlefield title has retained the Top Spot as the last iteration, ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’, was only No1 for its debut week before being dethroned by Square Enix’s ‘Final Fantasy XIII’ back in Week 10 2010.

This means that Sony and Naughty Dog’s latest installment in the PS3 exclusive Uncharted series, ‘Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception’, has to settle for second place, recording the 11th highest PS3 launch week. It achieved an increase of 37% in sales from the previous title, ‘Uncharted 2: Among Thieves’, which also debuted at No2 over two years ago, pipped at the post by another EA title, ‘FIFA 10’.

Sega’s ‘Sonic Generations’ is the only other new entry to breach the Top 10 at No10 with the rest of the titles in-between jostling for position.

EA’s ‘FIFA 12’ (-10%) holds at No3, ahead of Warner’s ‘Batman: Arkham City’ (-60%), down two places to No4.

Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance 3’ (-10%) is at No5 for the third week in a row, moving ahead of Sega’s ‘Football Manager 2012’ (-43%) which is down two places to No6.

Microsoft’s ‘Forza Motorsport 4’ (-25%) slips down a place to No7 followed by 505 Games’ ‘Zumba Fitness’ (+35%) and Activision Blizzard’s ‘Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure’ (+17%) both holding firm at No8 and No9 respectively.

The only other title to enter the Top 40 is Activision Blizzard’s Goldeneye classic, making its debut on Xbox 360 and PS3 this week with ‘Goldeneye: Reloaded’ coming in at No16.

For similar tier releases from last year in the same time frame:

Fable 3: 128,895
Fallout: New Vegas: 154,076
Medal of Honor: 197,835

Given that the game is single platform and the UK is tilted toward the Xbox 360, I feel that's actually a pretty solid result for Uncharted 3.

It's not a huge growth, but given the trajectory of most of Sony's franchises, I would say this is a positive result for them.

UC3 opening with 37% higher sales than UC2 sounds impressive, then I remembered that UC3 launched on a Wednesday. Still, it's a pretty good result.

Though a 37% increase is probably around what would be expected for a five day opening week compared to the usual three. It's difficult to say whether it has outperformed its predecessor.

Dance Central is an absolute disaster, the franchise is beyond dead, within 12 months.
Not 'dead' in the US.

Not really. These type of games usually drop considerably after the pre-orders are shipped. Not to say that they won't have legs, but the amount that they sell in 4th and 5th days is much more comparable to what they will sell in the next week daily average than the very first days.

4th and 5th days would be Saturday and Sunday in this instance. Hardly quiet retail days.

So hey, Kinect Sports S2 went up. Rare and Kinect still dead?

Kinect Sports 2 can be the first Kinect game to sell mediocre numbers in 11 months, maybe of course since Dance Central 2 also went up in his second week before crashing back down. Disney Universe and Sesame Street also went up in their second weeks, but they're still not close to even bad in terms of sales this week. This is not a very good week for Kinect.

Second year of Kinect has not seemed particularly great software-sales wise.

Kinect really took off in NA and the UK, everywhere else the reception was luckwarm at best, MS put a huge marketing campaign behind it and initially it worked out. They've blitzed the TV again with adverts but this time people don't seem to care much for it, of course still some time to go until Christmas so that could all change.

Tell you what though, UC3 bombed and that is no exaggeration. The game has had an enormous advertising campaign and only managed 37% on top of UC2 even though it had the larger advertising campaign, larger install base and released on Wednesday. Why Sony spent £5 million or whatever it was on advertising UC3 and not the likes of GT5 I'll never know. :/

Considering the aggressive advertising, Dance Central 2 is doing appallingly. Below Just Dance 2?

You do know just dance is a monster right? its alot more known brand and has more ads than dance central.

It's done 'ok' but being put between a BF3 and MW3 sandwich was bad news all round. Sony should have brought the games release forward by a few weeks. UC3 is well known enough but to face off between two massive FPS franchises was madness.

Give it some breathing space now we have CoD this week, followed by Skyrim.

GT5 sells on the name alone, so probably not that much need to put huge adverticing behind it.

But Uncharted 3 didnt bomb. Just because it had an ad campaign doesnt necessarily means that the game will sell sky high. Just the fact that it sold more than UC2 in its first week is a good start :) It is also the 11th biggest launch for a PS3 game, and the PS3 has about 400-500+ games. The game will contunie to sell as well, i'm not surprised if the game stays within the Top 40 for the rest of 2011.

What does this front loaded mean?
It means that most copies of the games are sold in short time after the release.

In one way, games that are front loaded is actually the best thing because then the stores get the money quicker and thet dont have to sit on the stock for a long period of time. So selling 200k of one game in 4-5 week is in that way better than having it sell 200k in 4-5 months.
