EA’s drive to compete with Activision in the FPS genre continues to gain momentum with the launch of this week’s new No1, ‘Battlefield 3’ on 360/PS3/PC by EA’s Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment (DICE). The game begins life as the 10th biggest UK All Formats week 1 seller (units) and 9th by revenue. Last year EA launched ‘Medal of Honor’ in week 41/2010 and ‘Battlefield 3’ has outsold the week 1 units on that title by 2:1 (developed by EA studio ‘Danger Close’ in LA, but with DICE involvement). In fact, adding up all 17 ‘Battlefield’ games week 1 sales since ‘Battlefield 1942’ in 2002 shows us that ‘Battlefield 3’ has outsold the cumulative week 1 sales of all of these combined. Warner’s ‘Batman: Arkham City’ drops to No2 (-52%), EA’s ‘FIFA 12’ drops 1 place to No3 (-14%) and Sega’s ‘Football Manager 2012’ also drops 1 place to No4 (-42%). Ubisoft remain at No5 for a second week with ‘Just Dance 3’ (-12%) and Activision’s ‘Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure’ continues to improve both in sales and chart positions, breaking in to the Top 10 at No9 (+31%). Also of note this week is Microsoft’s ‘Kinect Sports: Season Two’ debuting at No18 – this is the follow-up to Kinect launch title ‘Kinect Sports’ back in week 45/2010 and which is by far the best-selling Kinect game in the UK. The only other new entry this week is Namco Bandai’s 360/PS3 ‘Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi’ debuting at No23. Note that Ubisoft’s ‘Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn’ makes an appearance at No35 (+132%) but was actually launched the previous week.

Where the hell is Wii Music coming from? Has there been some kind of price promotion/re-release? Also, it can't be far off the week 1 sales of KS2 - MS will be hoping that that has the kind of evergreen legs that Nintendo titles have, otherwise that could be a fairly big fall-off from the first title.

It is when you take into account that they haven't advertised the 360 version at all.

As Dabanton said, this seems to be a theme with EA games. Heavy PS3 advertising and yet they continue to be outsold by the 360 version.

I somehow doubt this really matters. Has there ever been a case where the PS3 version in the UK has sold better than the 360 version of a game? Or when a Xbox 360 version has sold better than the PS3 version in... say... Spain or Germany? People have their preferences and the best selling version will probably be on the best selling platform.

As Dabanton said, this seems to be a theme with EA games. Heavy PS3 advertising and yet they continue to be outsold by the 360 version.

Not at all. Sony/EA know that these games are going to sell better on 360 so they do these exclusive adverts to raise awareness of the PS3 version in the hope the disparity in sales closes. It must work well for them as they do it year in year out.

It worked for Madden n the USA. IIRC, last year, X360 sales stagnated, while the PS3 version saw a significant increase, bringing it on par with the 360 SKU.

It's my feeling (purely from my own anecdotal experiences) that the PS3 base in the UK is made up of a lot more casual-leaning customers than the 360 one, so sales elasticity is more impacted by advertising.

I think it's probably because it got a permanent price drop? Spec 2.0 and Spa could have helped to, but that'd be fairly inconsequential versus the price drop, though the two help to advertise each-other.

If DanceStar Party came out this week as well then I feel sorry for that game, as it deserves to do better, particularly with so many other dancing games in the charts. I bought it and like it a lot.

Both KS and DC spent a lot of time in the charts, KS slowly moved up the charts week by week iirc.

With the other games out i'm surprised KS2 even got to number 15. This is an unprecedented autumn in gaming so many games out, a lot of money being spent and MW3 on the horizon.

Will be interested to see where UC3 comes in next week will PS3 BF3 sales legs fall off or will users just carry on buying BF3, ignoring UC3 or are they waiting for the following week and MW3.

Interesting to see Dance Central 2 move up, while Just Dance Kinect drops off the charts. It seems to be eating into JD3's 360 sales (only room for 1 Kinect dancing game?)

Kinect Sports 2 isn't off to the greatest start ever, but I wouldn't call it a bomb (not yet at least)
