THQ was readying a 'Brawl' clone featuring WWE wrestlers.

A video has been sent to Polygon showing footage from what is allegedly a game that the Australian studio Blue Tongue was working on before its closure by THQ in mid-2011.

The video shows an action brawler based on the WWE license called Brawl. Players appear to take on the role of a pro-wrestler before being tossed into a room with other wrestlers to battle it out. Among the wrestlers that players can choose include John Cena, The Miz, and Big Show.

A Polygon source who used to work at Blue Tongue tells us the game was in development for 1.5 years, with the video footage below showing the game after six months of development. The video shows the game in its pre-alpha stage; many elements had not been implemented yet, such as the UI, AI, certain gameplay features, and environments.

THE STUDIO COULD HAVE COMPLETED THE GAME HAD THQ NOT INTERVENED.

Approximately 30-40 developers were working on the game and our source tells us it was similar in scope to other Blue Tongue projects but with a higher profile because the WWE is one of THQ's biggest licenses.

Another former Blue Tongue employee told Polygon that the game was going to be "pretty big" with plans for a merchandise and TV show tie-in. The source tells us Blue Tongue was attempting to create something unique with the WWE license, such a completely original game world.

The source that sent us the video said the game's cancellation was an unfortunate case of mismanagement and that the studio could have completed the game had THQ not intervened.

The two minute long video shows a cartoonish take on the world of WWE, with tables and chairs exploding on impact and punches releasing blasts and sparks.

A similar video was released a year ago by the WWE to show the potential of the WWE license, but this was before the studio's closure.

Blue Tongue was based in Melbourne, Australia, and is best known for its original IP, de Blob and de Blob 2. The studio was closed in 2011 when THQ closed all its Australian studios, including Studio Oz (also known as THQ Brisbane).

EDIT: I just realized the title is misleading, mods, please change it.

Sounds way more interesting than WWE 13'. Would have likely bought it if it had been good and had some legends on it.

Edit: Wait, this was the de Blob guys? I would have bought this.

I don't know whats so complicated about making a good wrestling game.

Step 1: Use AKI engine
Step 2: Use current gen graphics
Step 3: Release on all platforms (Wii, 3DS, PS2, Vita, 360, PS3, PC)
Step 4: Success?

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
and nothing of value was lost.

de Blob and de Blob 2 were quite excellent. The latter was criminally ignored, especially by a market (360/PS3) lacking in quality 3D platformers.

How often it actually trends or how often WWE SAYS it trends?

It trends constantly. They have no reason to make that up. Even TNA's Eric Young has trended before. Even on PPVs, they trend.

Aw, this was Blue Tongue's work?

Damn. I always forget that they bit the dust, and reminders like this don't help to heal the wound.

Huh, this actually looks like it had potential to be pretty fun and charming. It would have to be ridiculously so for a WWE game to land on my radar, but it's still kind of a bummer that it got canned.

It's not hard to trend any show that's currently on.

Honey 2, a 45 minute long direct-to-video sequel to a direct-to-video quality movie.

A 2 year old rerun of American Dad on Adult Swim.

A skit on a old comedy sketch show.

Trending once versus trending a wrestler, and a wrestler's specific move?

I thought the game looked pretty cool the first time I saw it. The footage proved that it was a great concept and with a bit more polish could've been something cool like All-Stars was. Shame that'll never come to be.

The problem I have with current offerings is the lack of any substantial improvements. The roster might be updated, but the problems riddling the games have been antiquated back to the PS2 generation. The list of issues include:

- Clipping
- Poor Animation System
- Draconian Physics system
- No Damage system to speak of (Wrestlers should favor limbs, show bruises, and collapse as the matches drag on)
- Simple things that for some reason look stupid or take too long to implement (Triple H spitting water, facial animations that look like dog turd)
- Graphics that seem to favour a half dozen wrestlers and leave the rest of the roster in PS2 purgatory
- Audiences, chants, and atmosphere that for some reason still sounds and looks like shit.
- Features that are added and removed at random (blood is in, than removed)

I could keep going, but THQ will never take the time to truly reinvent the franchise. If the monkeys keep buying it, they will keep shitting it out. The time it will take to remake the game from the ground up is something that requires investment (which THQ doesn't have), new blood, and a serious look at what made wrestling games successful in the past.

@Folks saying most people hate wrestling, I agree with you, most do and even I hate wrestling, but I probably would have played this if it came to Steam. It looks like a modern take on the PowerStone formula and I like the art direction. Though honestly I'd prefer THQ do it with another license, it's be pretty sick with Warhammer, but that would have likely sold worse than this would have. I could have seen this game doing pretty well on the Wii a couple years ago when it was still alive & kicking.

Oh well, shame it was canned. Wish THQ wasn't in their current position, hands down my favorite of the major western publishers but they just keep losing their studios it seems.
