So not sure if it merits its own thread, but what are you guys looking forward to for 2013 for fighting games? About the only game I know of is Injustice, which I'll probably rent to dick around with, but have no intentions of spending a ton of time with.

There is a lot of games to pick from right now, but I really do wish we could have a Street Fighter 5. I know it's a fools dream since Capcom will save it for next generation. Hell I'd even like an update to MvC3.

No games right now give me that urge to go to the lab and spend insane hours on anymore. SF4 definitely did that for me, and so did UMvC3 for a good long while.

What's there on the horizon for fighting game fans? :(

Is that assist any good? Serious question.

The only bad thing about it is that it has no projectile invulnerability and gets snuffed out easily. For characters like Dante/Nova/Dorm with terrifying left/right game it's actually a terrific assist, almost like a better drones.

I was really, really hoping someone had screencapped that. Was fucking insane to watch.

that player had taken him to a 2-2 tie. They didn't connect again for another 3 or 4 games. The runback promised to be a motherfucker. Champ himself seemed be taking it seriously.

And then that first hit landed.

Has the stream restarted since then? Definitely wanna see the archive.

Oh share the story

Ok. This is going to be weird because I'm used to tell this story in spanish but here I go. Also this is going to be long. Finally I'm doing this as english practice so if you see grammar/spelling mistakes please let me know!

WARNING HUGE WALL OF TEXT INCOMING

This happened when I was 14, many, many years ago. I already had a growing arcade and video game culture, having many arcades close to my house(5 at walking distance) at the time, and near my school too(4). Among the ones near my place there was this big arcade(the most important arcade at the time, called "Bing Bang", later renamed "Bam Bam") where big boys went to play games and it was always packed. It was already great for me to just watch people play(games like POW, Moonwalker, Altered Beast, Golden Axe, After Burner, Dragon's Lair, OutRun, and many many others) and playing was such a blast. You could learn a lot about a game just by watching the pros going at it. Inside and outside that arcade it wasn't that safe at all, robberies and small drug dealers were common around it.

Ok, some context here: at the time in Peru a terrorist group, Shining Path, was doing really shitty stuff like car bombs, killing lots of people and more stuff than you can imagine. In fact, after a couple of years stuff like this(that was 8 blocks away from my house, some windows were blown up by the shockwave) happened with terrifying frequency. The government had no plan at the time to deal with a terrorist group doing guerrilla warfare and started to do raids at random, among much more stupid stuff. People were really scared.

So it was a tuesday(seriously), I was at school with an older friend(my 1 year older brother's friends were friends with me too), Elmer, and we were talking about this game, Haunted Castle(later known as castlevania) and how far we've made it(I did far better than him, getting to the third boss). Since Elmer had seen me finish Altered Beast before(with olny one credit, yay me!)at an arcade near school(we went there kinda regulary), we made a plan to go to the "Bing Bang" arcade since he wanted to watch me play the game and it was available there only. I called my mom from the school and told her that I was going to do some homework at a friend's place, something about a paper we had to do together. She said that it was ok and that I had to be home at 6 at most. We had some cookies and an Inka Kola and took the bus(I don't quite remember if it was the 58 or the chama, both had the same route) to go to the "Bing Bang" arcade(which was near my house so I would walk home later).

More context: after a recent dictatorship all school uniforms were the same ugly design for all students everywhere in Peru. That changed after some years, but at the time you could surely tell who was a school student just by their uniform. Of course, we went to the arcade wearing those.

We figured out there was no issue getting in a fight or something with the big guys that were there most of the time since it was early in the afternoon(2pm) and a boring week day. We made it to the arcade after a fast bus ride with no incidents whatsoever if I recall correctly. There wasn't many people at the arcade and there were some regulars(which to be fair were not that young nor good looking) playing some games. Elmer went to buy the coins while I waited for him in the Haunted Castle machine, thinking about how far I would get this time and trying to remember what I knew so far. He came back with some coins(he wanted me to keep playing for a while to get as far as I could) and we were set. I took a coin from his hand, pushed it inside the machine, and pressed start without even taking off my school bag from my back. I could almost feel the adrenalin and the endorphins flowing through my brain. Heaven, here I come again.

We silently watched the intro, it was almost like a movie and it was rare for people to skip the intros back then. Then the game began and it was business time against the undead. I had not played it for more than a few minutes when I felt my friend poking my arm. I was completely concentrated and shrugged him off at first, but then I turned and saw a police officer next to him. "Papers, I need to see your papers". Of course, we had no papers at all, being that young, here in peru at that time you had to be at least 17 to have any papers at all. "We don't have any papers officer, we don't have 17 yet" Elmer said. The officer replied "well, then you must have a copy of your birth certificate". Here in Peru policemen are amongst the most corrupt people you can find(some tourists even think that bribes are legal) so we instantly thought he wanted a bribe. "Ok officer, we're sorry but who carries a birth certificate copy nowadays? C'mon, there must be a way for us to fix this..." Elmer said, using well known jargon for "c'mon, how much do you need?". Another officer came behind the first officer and told him "hey, hurry up, we have no time!" and the first officer turned to us and told us "ok, come with me". To this date I don't know why I thought he only meant Elmer and not me so I just went back to playing, assuming that Elmer would sort things out with a couple dollars or so.

The cop came back and pulled me from my right arm saying "you think this is funny?" and pulled me to the front door, pointing to an old, rusty and almost hidden sign that read "No school boys allowed". I was still thinking that it wasn't a big deal and that maybe Elmer was taking too long to pay the officer. When we reached the door I saw many other cops on the street making a line towards the street corner and some other people walking that way so I knew it wasn't just us and that the bribe wasn't going to work this time. We were pushed towards the far corner of that block and when we reached the corner I saw what was happening. Around the corner there were LOTS of cops, police cars(and a couple of these) doing a raid. An old house around the corner was also full of cops and people were being arrested all over the place. We were taken(with no further questions asked) to one of the big cars and we were told to sit and hold our arms up. We were scared and excited at the same time, or at least I was, Elmer was very worried. I still couldn't believe what was happening and couldn't think of a reason why they were taking school boys when I saw that we were not the only minors with school uniforms inside the vehicle.

After a very short ride the police vehicle stopped and we were told to get the fuck out. We were at a main police station's closed parking lot(right next to its offices) and there were at least a hundred people forming lines already there. A high grade police was yelling orders to everyone and other police vehicles were coming from other places, loaded with more people. Cops began to take notes about everyone there, asking people their name, address, phone number and so on. We were also told to remove our shoelaces and to give them away. They started to sort people by "adults with papers", "adults without papers" and "minors without papers". While they were doing that the high ranked officer started to yell "Ok lazy people, you are going to give me some pushups now". No one complained. The sorting/getting information process took hours and we did pushups, squats and whatever the police chief felt like we should do. I was pulled away from Elmer when a cop came to ask for my information, I told him that I was 14, that I was just a school boy and begged him to call my mom and tell her that I was being kept there. He seemed moved by my plea(or maybe he was thinking about a bigger bribe) and he told me that he was going to try to call her. That alone made me feel better but I was still separated from Elmer in the line. I also asked the cop for some water(we were all sweaty and tired) but he said that "it's better if you don't drink a thing, you'll see". I noticed that even with all kinds of people there, including (but not limited to) prostitutes, trasvestites, robbers, drug dealers, beggars and child delinquents(called "pirañitas" in spanish) there was no further sorting done.

At about 7pm, when the sun was almost completely gone, the police chief gave his final order. "Ok, adults with papers, inside the cars, adults without papers to the 'dungeon', everyone else, to the 'hall'. Make it quick!". I felt lucky, since we were going to the "hall", maybe there was a TV there with some chairs and we won't have to be standing anymore. Maybe there was a bathroom so we could wash ourselves. Maybe even a store! Man, how lucky we were! Some people with papers were taken away while they were doing the sorting so there were at least 300 people left in the parking lot when the order was given. So they took the "adults with papers"(the biggest group by far) to the big police vehicles, not without some (futile)resistance. They then turned to the "adults without papers" and lined towards a stair in a side of the closed parking lot leading downwards into some underground basement of sorts. I was like "that was close!" and smiled towards Elmer(we were reunited after some hours apart fearing the worst). They took all the remaining adults downstairs into the 'dungeon' and loud noises from what appeared to be a rusty iron prison cage opening was heard. Some noises from the people were heard afterwards, seemed like there were people inside already. After a while the loud noise was heard again, most likely from the same gate closing. It was a scary sound that killed the casual chatting instantly.

Then it was our turn. It was almost 7pm so I was both hungry and worried about my mom and her reaction when I noticed they were lining us up towards the same basement the 'dungeon' was. Then we told us to move downstairs! A cop went first and opened the door at the end of the stairs and then said "ok, get in!". Our line started to go downstairs(Elmer was one of the first to go down) and when I reached the start of the stairs I couldn't believe what I saw. There was a tiny room between the end of the stairs and the two cells - nothing more. Two of the walls of that tiny room were not walls at all, they were the fences of the two cells that made up the 'dungeon' the cops were talking about. The 'hall' had only one real wall, the stairs(with an iron door) were on the other wall and the other two walls were the rusty cell fences and in the corner between the two fences there was a hole which was suposed to be the bathroom for the two cells and the 'hall'. Everything was filthy as fuck, in fact I don't think it had been cleaned in years and there was only external lighting from above. And it was a very small 'hall' so we all were being pushed into each other. "We" as in a group of 50~60 people including(like I said before) under-aged prostitutes, under-aged transvestites, under-aged thieves(even children), under-aged drug dealers/users, pirañitas, Elmer and me.

Once inside I saw Elmer holding his back against the only real wall and I went straight next to him as fast as I could, no a shadow of a doubt in my mind about it. It took a while for the whole group to get down there but they all did, slowly pushing against each other, reducing drastically our personal space. The cops closed the door and went away, leaving only one cop at the other side of the door. Then I started to really see where I was. The walls were filthy, with some painting in some areas, lots of scratches in other areas, and lots of names carved on them with god knows what. The cell fences were made up of very rusty but solid bars with generous space between them so the people inside could fit their arms between them comfortably. The floor was... something else, my best guess is that it was a cement floor, there was a thick layer of dirt and filth so I can't really say what it was, but it was hard and dirty. There was a small hole on the wall above us, I guess as an air vent, but some light came down from it too. And talking about air, the smell... oh god it was really, really bad, the worst I've ever experienced in my life, I tried to adapt to it but couldn't and most of the time I was breathing through my clothes. We could hear a tv above us with local shows and what sounded like a pool table with people playing, as if they were trying to mock us. I still had hopes of my mom coming for me at anytime but I wasn't sure about the cop. I was mostly worried about her not knowing a thing about me, and it was about 8pm now.

Those were the longest hours of my life. Elmer didn't say a thing to me. I didn't try to make conversation either, I think he was as terrified as I was. We could of course hear what the others were talking about, and it wasn't nice at all. Most talk was about poverty issues and the many problems that come with it. The pirañitas would talk about drugs and places where they could get some money. The prostitutes talk was really sad, they talked about their pimps, money issues, baby sons and daughters and drugs. And there was some nasty stories coming from inside the cells. Some guys were there without talking, they just stared at you if you tried to look at them, those were the worst. We thought they were going to jump on us, search our backpacks, our pockets, or even worse. We were so hungry! From time to time the talk got loud and the cop at the door would tell us to keep it quiet, or else. And from time to time another cop would come, yell a name, and someone would get out of the 'hall'. But there was no food, no water, no bathroom and no hope for us.

Around 1:30 in the morning, there was a fight. One of the transvestites claimed one of the guys inside the cells(or someone outside) did something to him. Things escalated pretty fast from there but seemed like most of the groups were waiting for something to go against another group and beat them. The pirañitas went nuts against anyone that was near them, the prostitutes did the same. It got really noisy with almost everyone screaming and cursing. The two of us ducked and tried to used our backpacks as shields. Someone kicked my backpack, and Elmer told me afterwards that he felt three hits on his backpack. It took a while for the cops to notice, and when they came down there were at least 6 guys with blood on their faces. While two cops waited at the door, three cops came inside, screaming and swinging their sticks, took one guy at a time outside and closed the door again. A cop's voice was heard upstairs "why are you doing this? we're trying to help you, you know? don't you understand? are your brains already gone?" and a long rant was heard with some weird noises we didn't recognize. Then the 6 guys came back, one at a time, with more blood on their faces. We assumed the cops above beat them for a while and everyone was quiet after that. Eventually they started to talk again but keeping it low, talking trash about the cops. The wait wasn't any easier after that.

At 4:30 I heard a familiar voice outside. At first I thought it was the TV but after a while, I was sure, it was my mom. She was outside, somewhere nearby, arguing with the cops. Some context here: My mom vs the cops is a 10-0 matchup for my mom. In her youth he used to be a part of a radical socialist party(back in the same dictatorship that chose our school uniform) and they had protests almost on a daily basis. When she wasn't doing political graffitis she was throwing stones at the police. That's where she met my father too. So she has a history of many not so sweet encounters with the police. In fact, running away from tear gas is one of my oldest memories when I was around 5 years old. And when I heard her voice something told me to get on top of Elmer(as close to the air vent on the wall as possible) and scream as loud as I could "I'M HEREEEEE!!!". My mom did her best juggernaut impersonation and made it to the dungeon's gate even with four cops trying to stop her, and she was screaming at them all the time, telling them that she was going to sue them, that she was the daughter of a friend of the president, that she was a lawyer and whatever came to her mind. The dungeon's door opened and I was out in no time. I only was able to tell her "my friend is inside" and she was screaming more obscenities and threats to the cops, telling them to let Elmer free too. I briefly saw my mom's face while she was screaming at one of the cops and I could tell she had been crying but there was no sign of weakness on her face, she was pure, swift rage. Then one of the cops told us "follow us".

We all three walked towards the chief's office, surrounded by 4 cops. I couldn't look at my mom again, I felt so embarassed but at the same time I was relieved I wasn't inside that horrible place, and she felt so strong and so sure of herself it was heartwarming. We went inside the office and the other four cops waited outside. The chief sat down, asked us to sit down(Elmer and I did so, my mom didn't) and started to say "well Mrs., you know the law is the law and you haven't brought your son's birth certificate so I don't know wat can we do about it, seems to me like there's a problem here". That is actually jargon for "now it's a good time to offer me a bribe". My mom exploded in anger(a bigger explosion) and gave a long rant full of threats that we didn't entirely hear because we went to the bathroom but when we came back the chief was already signing our release papers(so it must have been good because Elmer was being set free too and without his parents being there that was very, very hard to achieve). My mom still looked strong as a rock and the chief was all laughs as we left his office.

The sun was starting to come out when we all came out of the police station. I still couldn't look at my mom straight in the eye so I couldn't tell how she was doing. There were some taxi cabs parked outside and Elmer was very quick to say "thanks Mrs., I have to go to my house now, my family must be worried". My mom told him that by the time she got the cop's call(around 4am, god knows why he took that long to call her) she had already called most of my friends, that many of my friends saw me leaving with Elmer and she had already called his family asking for me(they didn't know a thing about him either), and that she called them again as soon as she knew I was at the police station. Elmer thanked her and walked towards a cab to get to his place. Only when he was gone and we were about to look for a cab for us I dared to talk to my mom and mumbled "thanks" very softly. She turned towards me, gave me this crazy, angry, disappointed look I'll never forget (I thought she was going to slap me or something) and she told me on the verge of tears "I never, ever got caught by the police and I did so much dangerous, ilegal shit back in the day... and you got caught at the arcade? you're a shame to me and your family!".

ROFL LMAO!!!!!

Someone has to upload this on Youtube.

The FChamp face palm says it all. Also I am hoping that guy was using Rocket Raccoon on Spitfire assist.

People should really listen to this one as they run through the whole year and nominate stuff like best non-EVO major, best new player, most over the hill, most hype moment, ect. Really good stuff and tons to talk about.
Kinda dumb that the results are in a separate episode, especially considering most of the discussion by the people choosing the winners is in this episode anyways.

Kinda surprising to hear unanimous agreement that KVO, a Marvel event, was the best International tournament this year.

Lol @ Honzo saying Chris G doesn't do well at giant tournaments, and is yet to win an EVO.. dude pretty much started playing fighting games seriously last year.

EDIT: Honzo is pretty on-point with most washed up member of the FGC picks and discussion though.

Holy shit, this new Street Fighter III 3S Highlights video has some wicked stuff
You's Remy beasting on fools
Remy's counter super ACTUALLY CONNECTING
TM showcasing why you never throw out hadukens at Q
Oro and Q pulling off EVO Moment #37 on ChunLi
Makoto comboing 2 SA2s together
http://youtu.be/n1vt7lVtTeU
The last minute features Chun vs. Yun footage so you can stop then.

Sounds cool - gonna watch this later.

EDIT: Scratch that, watching it already and this is incredible. Reminds me how much SF3 is like chess compared to SF4 being connect the dots.

Their collective nomination for Bala over MadKOF makes me salty.
Bala was doing stuff building up to Evo, but CafeID completely came out of nowhere and absolutely destroyed everyone else, not once, but twice (100% of the time they were here).

Evo was closer, but then they leveled up so much by Season's Beatings, that nobody poses a threat to them.
Everyone else stayed the same, but these guys got better and better.

lol champ still hasn't been paid for revelations.

Karma. I remember him clearly telling stream monsters to stop talking trash about the tournament and that payments are going to be made within a week via a check.

Bah. I'm still in 2012 mode. Don't feel like going to work.

How is he any less of a top player than Viscant was in MvC2? At least he got a couple of EVO top 8 for 3s.

Why are you talking about mvc2 for viscant? He won EVO and was pretty well establish in vanilla mvc3 2011. Since then Viscant has fallen considerably.

and what? Gootecks got top 8 for 3s? when?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolution_Championship_Series

Gooteks got top 8's at EVO? 3S?

Not that I could remember. He came into 3s later than most of the OG 3s NA players.

Viscant was never a top-tier player (as in a Justin, Chris G, etc.)

He's got issues with his hands. What he did at Evo was simple: he found the biggest BS possible in the game and exploited it to maximum effect, and it was with a team that helped cover for his technical limitations. Him falling off after UMvC3 came out wasn't surprising.

Mrs. Harvey
I think the whole purpose of the debate was about 2012. Gootecks hasn't been considered tops in anything since 2010 while Viscant in about a year's time went from top of the world to barely talked about.

In EVO 2003 Daigo got top 2 in four games and won two of them. God damn. And again won two games in 2004. wtf.

lol DSP top 4 in 2005, highest ranked American in ST

Gutabo, thank you for writing and sharing that story. Awesome finish by your mom :)

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it, the worst part for me is that everything, even the end, is true. At least my mom thinks better of me now!(I hope)

yeah a lot of people don't know how good the old "5 Gods of Fighting Games" (daigo, tokido, nuki, haitani and sako) were.

Most people just know daigo from the 3s parry video and SF4. For Tokido its akuma and SF4. Both nuki and haitani fell off after the release of SF4 (you'll see haitani here and there with makoto I believe in sf4) and Sako is just an old guy now with really good execution (and one of the best cammys).

Before SF4 those 5 were pretty dominant in every 2d fighting game. But times have changed and things are now different. The only real "gods" left are Daigo and Tokido but that status is tremendously weaker than it used to be.

Who did he pick?
Don't think that one's really fair.

I wouldn't say Viscant is washed up either, but he has fallen from grace, despite being one of the most knowledgeable dudes for Marvel. Honzo said something to the tune of how do you go from being the Champ to "what is that guy doing now anyways?" He's still pretty good, it's just his team got hit hard and he doesn't have the execution to pick a top tier. Dropping sword and lightning loops everywhere. Purity for life <3

Jago and Floe were in the running too and Honzo said they couldn't be washed up because they were never good, and then everyone pondered why Floe is still on EG if he doesn't perform. Floe has that Yipes thing to him, where the other EG guys say he's a beast in casuals. Maybe they keep him around because he's good practice for the real EG killers. IMO Jago was pretty good in Marvel though, if he continued practicing he would be a massive threat.
