...lucky bastard.

;)

..between the PS3 and a new Reciever, my holiday goodies are all used up.

..it will be well into next year before I can even begin to think about grabbing a PSP.

Hey, it happens. As I said, I've spent very little time with my DS this year (there are so few games that interest me), so I know the feeling. One man's gold is another man's lead brick. :)

Oh, absolutely. My point was simply that it isn't just Nintendo fanboys who are bored with their PSP, just as it also doesn't make sense to say that the people who find the DS boring do so simply because they are Sony fanboys.

I WANT to love my PSP. Very badly. But, for me, there are just so few games on it I could give a crap about. I wish that wasn't the case.

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
I'll recommend something that noone did so far, and that I think makes a perfect handheld game:

Pinball Hall of Fame

It's a really well done pinball simulation (and I'm really picky with my pinball simulators), with 11 of Gottlieb’s best pinball tables.

I really think the PSP is a great system....it just could have been so much greater. The usual Sony game machine just wasn't there for it early in its life.

But that hasn't stopped it from having a great, varied array of titles that absolutely kick ass.

Metal Gear Portable Ops
Killzone Liberation
Daxter
Syphon Filter
Ghosts and Goblins
LUMINES!~!!!!!
Ridge Racer

Excellent games that I own and love.

1) Not at all. I've dropped my black PSP from about 4 feet up onto a hard tile floor and watched in horror as it skidded along. Thankfully, it landed on its back. No problems with it.

Glad to hear it didn't die. That actually makes me feel better because I have a 17 month old daughter. I am sure she will get her hands on it one day and probably drop it.

dark10x said:
2) It can scratch easily enough, but as long as you use a case, it shouldn't be a big deal.

I wasn' sure if I should get a case. I don't know if my wife already bought one either. If she didn't I'll pick on up.

dark10x said:
3) Battery life varies per game. Original launch systems lasted a good 4-6 hours, but I hear the updated batteries give it some extra juice. Don't forget about sleep mode (just flip the switch quickly). You can leave it in sleep mode for WEEKS without a problem and come right back to the game where you left off.

More than enough for me. That sleep-game-save thingy sounds sweet. I didn't know it could do that.

dark10x said:
4) They are decent at best, but sound very tinny. Headphones or external speakers are recommended (just plug in a pair of decent PC speakers or wire it to your receiver). If you have neither, the speakers will get you by.

That's a good idea. I'll have to check it out connected to my HT. I'll most likely be using it all over the house, etc. though, so headphones won't probably be used. Perhaps when I'm listening to music....

Thanks for the answers. Much appreciated.

I'm surprised no one has asked: What makes you think she got a PSP?

She casually asked one day what you could do with the PSP and if it came with any games. It was out of the blue, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt that she was just asking because of an add she saw in the paper.

Ever since though, I've had the feeling that she bought it after work one day. My intuition is almost always right - my dad is like that too, so I probably got it from him.

The best indicator is that one day I said I bought one because it was on sale, and then she said she did too. I told her I didn't believe her. hahahah Well, she could have been playing with me. She can be really sneaky sometimes, though it always makes smile. :)

Dunno if this helps, but since I've been contemplating a PSP I recently made a list of potential games I might want - to see if it's worth a purchase. If you want, you can sift throuh my list to see if there's anything interesting... I warn you... it's got not yet released and Jp language only games mixed in it.

My tips:

Assuming it's not the downgradable motherboard, when you get the PSP, do the following:

If the firmware is under 2.71, upgrade to 2.71 and keep it there.

Look up "HEN-D." Install it. Get Devhook with 3.02 support.

Then pack that sumbitch up with SNES, Genesis, and GBA games (assuming you own the games already).

**** SONY AND THEIR OFFICIAL CRIPPLED FIRMWARE BULLSHIT YEARRGHHHHHH

P.S. Games to buy: GTA (both of them), MGS, Daxter, Syphon Filter, Tales of Eternia, From Russia With Love (shut up, it's fun).

Congrats! I doubt I'd buy one myself as there's not a lot that interests me on it, but I'd be damn happy if someone gave me one. With all it's different functions I'm sure I'd find something to do with it. It's definitely not reaching it's full potential as a gaming platform but all in all it's still a pretty cool handheld.

You'll want:

- 4gb memstick... they're decent price and the extra storage will come in handy especially after you see how neat it is to put porn and Family Guy episodes/clips on there and the such, along with the PSone downloadables from the PS3 PSN

Games:
MGS: PO is a must
Syphon Filter
Daxter
The new Rachet will probably be good
Lumines 1 or 2
Pursuit Force is pretty decent... Part Racing/Part Action, how can you go wrong? Well, it's difficult at times...
Ghouls and...
Gradius Collection
Metal Slug collection will likely be a blast...

There's much more than those, just off the top of my head...

Dear Sony,

Please begin to produce "I was 99% certain my Wife bought me a PSP for Christmas but all I got was this lousy t-shirt!" t-shirts asap.

Playstaion Logo and/or PSP Logo over left breast with 'statement' text placed on back.

...well, it's more than a hunch. I'm about 99% sure. Kinda excited - never had a handheld gaming system before. If she did get a PSP, I'm looking forward to trying it out with the PS3 (eventually...when it stops disappearing from store shelves).

Anyway, my point is I don't know much about the PSP. I know there are a few good games out there, but what the hell are they? Anything in particular I should pick up? My preference is platformers, action, racing, adventure, and I like RPGs too. Oh, puzzle games are always great.

Besides games, anything else, such as accessories, worth picking up? I might need a memory stick - 1 GB, 2GB, or something else?
Oh my gosh! More viral marketing from SCEA! :p
Anyway... WipEout Pure, GTA Vice City Stories, Out Run 2006 Coast 2 Coast, Loco Roco, Metal Gear Ac!d 2, Daxter...

If you like Golden Age arcade games at all (Missile Command and Asteroids, especially) you NEED Every Extend Extra. It's absolutely fantastic.

I can't decide whether I'd like Gunpey or not. I'm feeling so much good will towards Q? over E3 that I'm really tempted to buy it, but James Mielke is one of the only people in the universe who seems to have enjoyed it.

Sure. And that's why I said "mostly." And I'm really talking generally about the thread-crapping that seems to happen every time the PSP is brought up around here. I find that annoying, but maybe that's just because of my Sony fanboyism.

Just picked this up at K-Mart for 9 bucks. If you see this and are interested in pinball even the slightest, I suggest picking it up.

Have they fixed the screen yet? I really wanted to keep my old PSP, but the ghosting drove me up the wall. I would consider repurchasing if Sony did a stealth upgrade, as there are some games that interest me again.

I just got a new psp and haven't really noticed any ghosting that everyone keeps talking about. However, I've only played burnout legends, killzone, and pinball hall of fame.

I used to convert movies(PSP Video9) on mine and watch them off the memory stick. The ghosting and blurriness was awful. Hopefully it is better now.

I see. I did watch part of the Lords of Dogtown UMD and it looks gorgeous, like a mini plasma. Hopefully when I put my own videos on there it will be smooth.

There have been lots of solid recommendations already. For newcomers, I recommend digging into the Greatest Hits selection for some top-notch games on the cheap, like Wipeout Pure, Lumines, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, and Burnout Legends.

If you have a PS3 (or plan to get one soon), then you'll want at least a 1 GB Memory Stick, in case you're tempted by the PS1 downloadable games.

In any case, I'd recommend getting one as large as you can afford. I've seen some pretty good deals on 2 GB and 4 GB Memory Sticks lately.

Good call. It might be slightly difficult to find now, but it's inexpensive and very easy to get into. It's one of PSP's underappreciated gems.

If anyone is interested in finding this, check out K-Mart's clearance display for games. They had a few psp games: Tigers Woods, Astonisha (something like that) Story, Pinball Hall of Fame, Hustle: Detroit Streets, and a few others for 9 bucks each. There was a ton of copies of each. They had games for each of the last gen consoles as well (PS2, GC, Xbox) and I picked up Killswitch for the Ps2.

I find it annoying and I'm as far away from a Sony fanboy as anybody can possibly be. Most of the PSP haters just want to hate and haven't even seriously looked at what the system has to offer. The PSP has had a phenomenal year, I've played it three times as much as my DS.

Theres a lack of GTA in a lot of peoples lists, but they really are awesome games (esp. VCS). Games that make you say "wow, this is on a handheld?", for more than just graphics, but the gameplay.

every extend extra and lumines are both must buys. great system, it can hold its own despite what the DS fanboys tell you.

Games I Recommend:

Loco Roco
MGS: Portable Ops
Field Commander
Lumines 1 or 2
EEE
GTA
Wipeout
Tekken: DR
Killzone Liberation

Must-Have Accessories:

2 or 4GB Memory Stick (Bigger is better, esp. when you start saving video, and start downloading PS1 games via the PS3)
Hori Screen Protector (Only $5. Well Worth it)
Play Gear Portable (Best case for PSP IMO. I got one used for $4.95 @ Gamestop)
8 UMD Case

Look, people, I'm getting really, REALLY sick of the system wars bullshit. If people are asking for DS recommendations or PSP recommendations, and you come into the thread starting some shit, you will take a vacation. I don't care if you're trying to be funny anymore -- it starts with someone making a joke, and then the people who are humor-impaired come in and REALLY start trolling.

If someone starts a thread asking for advice on deciding between them, then please feel free to compare and contrast...otherwise, you have been warned. In the past, I have tended to read PSP threads more often since I own one, but I'm going to start policing DS threads just as ruthlessly. This will stop NOW.

Lisa Edelstein's dad touched my private parts. True fact.
PSP is quite awesome, actually. Sure there aren't soo soo many great games – but they do come out every so often. It is, however, a pretty ****ing nifty ultra portable computer.

Just downloaded new firmware and I'm buying a 4GB card from J&R before my argentine vacation. I've been using PSPWARE – putting episodes of the office on here, listening to junior boys with nice visualizers, browsing the internet, syncing contact and bookmark information, downloaded Locoroco christmas demo – what a nice piece of hardware if not necessarily the greatest gaming platform out there..

Is there a 'safe' place to buy used PSPs?

Makes me nervous buying used but two console purchases in two years has just about depleted my Gaming Fund.

Congrats!

I highly recommend:

Daxter
Syphon Filter Dark Mirror
GTA:VCS
Lumines
Ridge Racers
Virtua Tennis
Metal Gear Solid: PO

And a large capacity memory stick duo.

Also the Logitech Play Gear case is nice.

Remember Lumines =! Lumines 2. If you want a great puzzle game with some quirky, catchy Japanese tunes get Lumines. If you want a great puzzle game ruined completely by EATRAX shit and garbage skins are hard as hell to read... get Lumines 2.

Either way, it's still the only game worth the money on the PSP. The "Big name games" universally suffer from very poorly attempting the control methods to the PSP, I found Liberty City virtually unplayable (coming from the PC GTAs). MGSPO is much the same, I'd rather just not bother fighting the controls on the PSP.

Except for Loco Roco, Lumines and Untold Legends my PSP catalog is nothing but stuff I played for a couple of hours and never went back too.
