XCOM: Enemy Unknown - Taking a break from my backlog and doing a Classic Ironman runthrough of XCOM to scratch an itch. After that I'm not sure what I'm going to take on.

On the Agenda
??? Don't know what I'm in the mood for after XCOM at the moment. I have lots to choose from, though.

I have to say I'm proud of myself this month. Finished Deadly Premonition and Culdcept Saga, two games I've had for years thanks to friends who recommended them but they fell by the wayside. Also finally finished Mark of the Ninja, so that's another plus. I'm not having the urge to buy many new games at the moment, so if I can keep this up I might be able to stay positive for the year.

The problem is going to be the Steam sales, I'm sure.

OK, a question regarding bundles. I bought the Groupees Retro bundle for 8-Bit Commando, Anodyne, Bleed, Dead Pixels and Smooth Operators: Call Center Chaos. But after meeting certain sales milestones, they added like four other games I'm definitely interested in playing.

For the purposes of the thread game, should I count those four games or were they "free"?

April was a decent month I guess. Bought Bug Princess 2: Black Label since it was finally put on sale for the first time since it was released last year. I can't pinpoint the difference from the original game but each mode have different scoring mechanics. Don't know if its better though. Re-bought SMT:Nocturne since a friend borrowed it last year and I've lost contact to him for more than a year now. I don't expect to get that back at this point. Also snagged Raidou 1 because of the reprint and I've been waiting for it to go down in price since its been $100 for years, only played for an hour or so, but I can't get into it. I also had this same feeling for Raidou 2 which I haven't played for years. Don't know why Im struggling to play both games, but Im gonna give them another chance someday, Im currently hyped for SMTIV anyway so they can wait.

Also got some time in April to beat Atelier Ayesha. It was short even with two playthroughs but still a great game. I can't tell if its better than Totori or Meruru though but I personally think it holds up really well and I loved the new synthesis mechanics too. The biggest release during April for me would be Soul Hackers. Really love the we can finally play the game in english. Definitely one of the best SMT games too. It feels more like SMT I&II with the Magnetite system, fusion system and even how the main character plays. Also love how there are dozens of demons I've never seen before.

Don't know what game to play next too. Currently have Mana Khemia and Raidou 1 on my backlog but Im not in the mood for both. Im also in the middle of my 2nd playthrough in Soul Hackers but it can wait since I have the time. I might play Atelier Ayesha for the third time though because of the new DLCs. Also hoping that I won't buy a game this May.

- Not all that much time for gaming since I have started a new job. Decided to put Kingdom Hearts Final Mix and Eternal Sonata on hold because both games got boring.
- I actually had Sleeping Dogs sitting in my Steam storage ever since the game was mispriced during the end of the Winter sale. Wasn't sure whether to gift or keep it (got a new video card 3 weeks ago, so went for the latter).

Didn't go on quite the adventure game binge as expected but did at least finish one, and managed to go even for the month. I don't plan on really buying anything soon, with one exception being Evoland if I see a sale on it, but I also don't know how many non-rentals I'll be able to complete if I put attention towards Ni No Kuni so it could be a rough next couple weeks anyway. Want to fit in some short games so I feel a little better about what the GameFly titles will do to my productivity.

Went on a bit of a Pokemon binge this month with Red and Crystal versions. Some people in the office have started a series long play which got me all nostalgic. The changes between the two generations were massive, I never really appreciated it as a kid. I got given the carts a few years ago where they sat in my backlog until now.

Super Mario Bros 2 is great, it was the last main Mario game on the NES I had left to beat. Hopefully some of the enemies can make more of an appearance in the future because Wart was pretty awesome.

Luigi's Mansion 2 is easily my favourite 3DS game so far, the attention to detail is amazing. The bosses felt a bit rushed at times, save for the first one, but the rest of the game makes up for it. I initially felt skeptical at the mission structure, but I actually liked it more than the original.

Next up is Bit. Trip Presents Runner 2 which I am playing through gradually with the SO. It is definitely easier than the first game, in my opinion, but its been a treat so far. Got given Tomb Raider (2013) the other day and have made a bit of progress in that already. The opening sort of did everything I don't like about games nowadays and I am really hoping it picks up later and becomes a bit more open with perhaps some puzzle solving and interesting traversal mechanics. Also playing through Dr Mario and StarTropics on the NES. Going on a bit of a NES tour at the moment, determined to beat games that had me stumped as a kid.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon - Aside from one boss fight with an unpleasant segment, I pretty much enjoyed my time with this. Might be a while before I go back to try and find all the gems and such but in the meantime my son just adores this game. His cousins also own it, I should have them try the multiplayer sometime soon.

Currently Playing:

LEGO City Undercover (Wii U) - Just trying to rush the last few chapters at this point. I had to start the game over when I hit a game breaking bug in Chapter 7 so I'm less interested in the open world at this point. Maybe I'll revisit it and do some exploring someday but I just want to finish the story for now. My son is playing the 3DS game but I think I'll just skip that one.

Prince of Persia (Steam) - This is the 2008 cel-shaded game. I really enjoy its design, even the simple dial-a-combo combat. I beat this ages ago and got a sudden itch to play it again. I think that's satisfied at this point and I'll probably move on to something else. When it came out I didn't find the ending as disappointing as others, but I guess that's changed now knowing that there's still no sequel on the horizon.

Impressions

Crysis 2: Lots of style but lacking the substance of the orginal. Each area might be trated as it's own contained playground but stealth makes the game on any dificulty a cake walk.

LotR: WitN: Started off quite well but experienced quite a few glitched towards the end, one which stoped progress of the main quest. Thankfully had an earlier save on the cloud or this would be left unfinished.

Trine 2: Took was was great about the first game and expanded upon it. Good mix of puzzles, hack and slash and traversal. Great fun in 3 player co-op, even if you can break the game.

F1 Racestars: Bland as bland can be. Started off alright but due to the AI being way overpowered what little fun was soon sucked out of this game. Was a PS+ freebie but I certainly would not have paid for this.

Gaming has taken a back seat since February so I'm just quietly enjoying the odd game. Thomas Was Alone was an absolutely fantastic experience and an enjoyable platinum. LEGO Batman 2 was very impressive for a LEGO game even if it was a huge collectathon but I've finally got the 1000/1000GS. I've got that many games on the go i don't know what will be next, but I really want to get Luigi's Mansion 2 done.

Wow! Where did April go? Didn't even realize it is May already! Despite all the stuff going on in my life, I had the most productive month so far this year.

The Adventures of Shuggy (4/2) -- This is a pretty charming and fun little puzzle platformer. Nearly all of the rooms are fun (which is good because there are a lot of them!) andcan take a little while to figure out but then can be beaten in a matter of seconds.

Gunman Clive (4/7) -- A fun, old-school shooter/platformer with a nice art style. I played the Android version and I wasn't too impressed with the touch-only controls. Made the game much more frustrating than it needed to be.

Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale (4/27) -- I'm kind of mad at myself for not playing this sooner. Got it for $1 in a Steam sale like four years ago and just now got around to playing it. While it has its fair share of flaws, I found it incredibly fun taking advantage of the fluxuating economy to make myself obcenely rich.

Impressions:
Tomb Raider (4/5) - This franchise has never really appealed to me and after hearing the backlash from the E3 press conference it made me less interested in playing it. From quick looks and discussions on podcasts I gradually became more interested and the bow play is what finally sold me. The start felt a little bit slow, like a stale introduction, and felt like it was trying to push the vision of it being open-worldly with a meaningful system for upgrading. I didn't really understand the purpose of it trying to get me to pick berries or kill deers or whatever the hunting mechanisms were, but as you can probably tell from my knowledge of the systems: they were darn near irrelevant. Personally I was okay with that because it meant that I only had to play into some dull survival system for the better part of a half hour intro. So with that said that was how I felt the game would continue to play out and buyers remorse was sinking in. After an hour or two of playing the game beyond that intro the game had really sunk its claws in. It felt like the first time playing uncharted were I wanted the game to slow down so as to avoid it coming to a close because I was having so much fun. I thought the combat was really well designed and although you are limited in weaponry they do a good job of ensuring you use all of it. The enemy types were a variety of small units and one or two different types of the bigger guys. The diversity here certainly contributed to the game moving away from an initial stale flavor and largely prevented you from going about encounters the same way every time. I don't know if drawing comparisons to the Uncharted series is the right way to review this game but it's hard not to with the way they open the game (for those of you that have played you know what I mean with the
climbing the plane scene
. It diversifies itself in the seeming freedom of traversal in some of the hub areas but more often than not it is fairly linear in the path you take. Apparently collectibles were big in this game but having never been a fan of spending loads of time to achieve digital goods in a game that I probably won't play after getting them, I didn't put a whole lot of effort into getting them. I liked the story but I could see someone else calling it standard and it isn't really the core of the game from a sales standpoint so I wasn't overly focused/critical of it. This game being on shorter side of things with really good gameplay and solid AV, I would highly recommend this.

I hit my head and had full-on amnseia for a couple of days 13-ish years ago. I still have pretty big gaps in my memory from around that time and have a little trouble with my short-term now. Sometimes I have to do the math to remember how old I am.

I've sort of run into a similar issue. I have a ratchet and clank game as well as portal 2 and a sly game. I really want to bring my backlog down to zero but I cant bring myself to take an interest in those games right now/

Odin Sphere is beat. I loved it! There were some pretty major gameplay problems, particularly slowdown and weightlessness. Still, super glad I finally got around to this and am looking forward to Dragon's Crown all the much more now.

So I've come to the conclusion that all I really wanna play right now is more Borderlands 2 (which I already beat with one character), so I'm putting my backlog on hold and just playing BL2 until I get sick of it, which will probably be never. My backlog may suffer, but I am enjoying my gaming time a lot more.
