If you post some fake news, and get away with it, you just damage Gaf's reputation overall. Therefore, removing a fake news thread is not enough if the news has already been posted, and in some cases are up for a few hours already - something is needed to discourage people from posting fake news. This something is a ban.
Some people take the internet way too seriously. Banning someone because they tried to be the first to post a news article with possibly incorrect information. The person who posted realized they made a mistake too and obviously doesn't want to be banned.
Wasn't NeoGaf responsible for the MGS Soda thing too? :lol
I'm sure there are plenty more examples to go along with that.
