Media Create Sales: Week 1, 2013 (Dec 31 - Jan 06)

To make it simple ;) :

1. Vita selling less than the predecessor in the second year.

2. Vita selling less than last year.

3. Vita selling way less than competitor, who/which (?) not only a had a bump compared to last week, but also to last year.

4. For months, not a single Vita game appeared in the charts.

And the vocal minority on gaf is like Vita back from dead.

Yeah; probably many people didn't see how PSP grew wrt last week, and how it's outselling Vita.

Wii U in terms of: After 5 weeks, Wii U is where GCN was after 14.5 weeks (December 19, 2001), where Wii was after 3.6 weeks (December 21, 2006), where 3DS was after 3.4 weeks (March 16, 2011), where PS3 was after 16.2 weeks (February 26, 2007), and where PSV was after 25.7 weeks (June 8, 2012).

Given how long after its natural end that the PS2 was tracked, it strikes me as a little early to stop tracking the DS. Not that it's particularly problematic, or wrong, just annoyingly inconsistent!
In both cases they waited until the successors could get to 8 million, and then let them finish up the year. Totally consistent.

Based on that chart and the games listed, you could ask the same thing about the WiiU.
Not really, it just launched and is still on the downslope. But anyway, the issue has been clarified, I didn't know week 1 was generally that big in terms of sales in Japan.

I think you're mistaking light-hearted mockery with genuine enthusiasm. Poe's Law strikes again...

Regular game releases don't count for much when there's nothing, save possibly Soul Sacrifice, that's appealing to the mass market.
They did last year. As far as I remember, Vita's sales were generally stable or saw small increases in weeks with releases, even niche ones. It was the long droughts that sent it below 10k.

When are we expecting Vita price cut news btw?

I guess that Playstation event in February would make sense as a place to annouce it but imo they should be getting the price cut done in Feb to make the few games they have get a better push.

Will Sony and third parties be happy with weekly sales around 15-20k, with a high chanche to come back to sub-10k levels?

That's because maybe you are looking for mid-tiers games as SS can be in that list.

There are not, but rest of these games are released almost every week and i think that factor can put Vita on a range of 15-20k units sold until more appealing games as SS, ToH, DOA5 arrive and give a bump to that range.

The surprised reactions for the Vita sales would have happened regardless to how the 3DS is doing. If the 3DS had sold ten times as much as it did, people would most likely still be surprised of the Vita bump. The 3DS sales arent really a part of this surprise. Everyone who is following the japanese sales for a while knows that the 3DS is crushing the Vita in sales, and i dont think anyone here is expecting Vita to be able to beat the 3DS in sales anytime soon. That is why i was wondering which perspective you ment :)

I think most of this is partially joking. I havnt seen anyone so far who think this bump is going to lead to bigger Vita sales in the upcoming weeks.

what is the reason of the Vita numbers? new color?

New Years Day.

Maybe someone should edit an explanation into the OP for the increase. Sales historically increase the first week of the year. Please look at all the numbers. It's normal.

WiiU will definitely tank tank tank with that list.

Don't know what Nintendo is doing. I want to know what they expected with the WiiU and its current library

4. For months, not a single Vita game appeared in the charts.

only 2 weeks in 2012 where the Vita had no games in the MC top 50
14 weeks it only had 1 game in the MC top 50 though (up through week 51), so "for weeks, a single Vita game appeared in the charts" is more accurate :)

Looks like Vita actually has a lineup now and its going to be releasing at a consistent pace. Last year it was normal to see a week go by without a single new release but now its going to be 2-3 games each week. Nice.

I've been watching your posts for a couple weeks now, and I really think you need to tone your handheld warmongering down a little.

I was under the impression that Nintendo wanted to avoid this very situation. Maybe they really couldn't get people on board with the Wii U. I feel like the Wii U is a barren wasteland right now. I really want to know what their doing.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Even stranger: Xbox 360 has more dated japanese 3rd party support than 3DS. What's going on at Nintendo?

Thanks, I'll add it.

There will be probably something more for the rest of March. We need dates for Nintendo titles too. 3DS has already many third party releases slated for 2013, but with no dates (Before today, it was even "worse" since Layton was one of them actually, and now it's dated); in the next weeks / months I'm sure we'll see other announcements that will surely be for Q2 and could be even for March.

Yea, was this not one of the mistakes they said they didn't want to repeat? Not sure what they're doing, the release list doesn't exactly push someone who's on the fence to make a purchase.

Nintendo built a more solid launch line-up than the 3DS one (and sales-wise this is pretty clear); however, they did not plan so well the first months.

Yeah; probably many people didn't see how PSP grew wrt last week, and how it's outselling Vita.
The PSP bump sure does put the Vita bump into perspective.
People mentioned that this week usually gives hardware bump, that would include the PSP as well. The bolded numbers mentioned earlier compared this week to last year's week. The PSP numbers in that comparison did not see a bump (it went down from 71k to 55k). But i'm pretty sure that the Vita bump would be surprising regardless of how the other systems are selling. The PSP has also been outselling the Vita for months now, so that is not a new surprise either in my opinion. I know what you mean with perspective, but the fous is more on the Vita bump surprise regardless of how the other system sold :)

I was thinking of the japanese developed and published games, there the 3DS has more than the Xbox 360 :) But yeah, true that there arent many dated 3DS games yet, which is also a bit strange concidering the huge popularity of the 3DS.

I also wonder if everyone cleared out due to MH4 in March, and now that's it delayed they might move releases back in?

Making the list Japan developed cuts each of the consoles down pretty dramatically while handhelds are almost unchanged.

I'd like to think the same, committed 207 PS2 buyers bought it this week as the last.

I thought it'd be interesting to compare the top 10 3DS games with their performance on the digital side. As of today, the retail games placing in the 3DS download software recent top 20 are as follows (MC Week 1 charts, Famitsu Week 1 Charts in brackets):

1. AC New Leaf (1, 1)
3. Fantasy Life (6, 9)
17. Paper Mario Sticker Stars (3, 3)
19. NSMB2 (2, 2)

The places between these four are all download only.

IE isn't available as download.

Might be shortages and similarity to AC that makes it a bigger success on the digital side as well.

What I expect:

Nintendo Direct february

Games they will show for WiiU:

Rayman legends
Wii Fit U
Wario
Pikmin 3
Aliens Trailer
Need for Speed Trailer
Bayonetta Teaser

That's it.

That's actually a lot. I don't expect that much. Wii Fit & Bayonetta are too far off & probably won't show up yet. And they've already shown Pikimin on directs, they may feel it's redundant. As for Aliens...do we have a firm U release date for that yet? I remember it wasn't going to show up with the other versions.

The Wii U release schedule is beyond a joke. How that has managed to happen amazes me.

Probably the same way it did on DS, 3DS & Wii, Nintendo's first few months after a launch have been barren for quite a while now. At least this time they got a lot of 80+ rated stuff out at launch to play during the drought.
