Dragon Quest Community Thread: Come in! Would you like a Puff-Puff?

I wonder if Bianca and Nera were at all influenced by Betty and Veronica, it's similar enough.

And if we're going by that, Debora could easily be a Cheryl Blossom type.

The stream on Saturday made me excited about DQ again, so I went back to my DQVI mobile save and finally cleared the Isle of Murdaw Castle. Died on my first try and after that spent a good 30+ minutes in the casino, getting 2 armors and 2 shields. It went very smoothly after that.

Bought myself the mobile port of Dragon Quest 1. Never really played it before so it is a new experience to me but one I definitely have wanted for a while. I've always enjoyed the talking to people to get information aspect of DQ games and of course this is no different. I know certain things to do and certain items I'll need but it is fun talking to people and having them tell me to go fight monsters to level up or that I need proof of who my ancestor was.

Controls surprisingly well. I can basically zone out while grinding and either watch a Twitch stream or today watch football. Sometimes getting into tight spaces to talk to an NPC takes a try or two but it is nothing offensive.

Definitely glad I'm taking this adventure and definitely thinking about playing 2 and 3 in this fashion at some point as well.

So in about 20 hours?
Yes. Countdown timer.

Since I'm in this thread - I finally finished DQVI on iOS. To be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of the increased number of boss battles, compared to the previous titles in the series.
The class system, while fun in theory, lead to a lot of grinding if you wanted to get 1 specific high level skill from an advanced class that you wouldn't need otherwise.

The last boss took me about an hour to beat with one rewind. I hate that the game disabled quicksaving in the last dungeon, but luckily I didn't wipe completely. The funny thing about the last battle was that what saved me was one character whom I didn't use for the whole game. He was sitting in my Wagon and I randomly decided to teach him Hustle Dance, because why not. Turns out it was a great decision.
Can't say I enjoyed the boss who could resurrect parts of himself. In general, I feel like DQ bosses are the most annoying JRPG enemies I faced - sometimes attacking twice, having stuff like that resurrection, sigh.

DQVII is next on the list and while I recently bought the 3DS version on sale, I think I'll stick with the mobile port. It looks better, runs faster and quicksave doesn't kick you back to the main menu. I'll jump back to console versions with VIII for the 3DS.

Not on TV Japan. :(

Is there going to be a stream of this somewhere? Or am I going to need to resort to some youtube bootleg after the fact.

Cute subtitle, nice DQ3 reference.

I'm almost done with DQVI. Apparently the remake isn't good but I'm having a blast and the backstory
behind Milly is surprisingly dark and tragic.
It kinda took years for me to see the magic behind this series (I was stuck in Murdaw's first lair lol.) but after finally getting back into DQVI, it's got a variety sad vignettes which definitely make it stand apart.

It's so unfortunate how few people tend to like DQ6 if their first experience is the remake. (._. )

I've finished playing DQV(DS) earlier today. This is the second Dragon Quest game I've completed, the first being DQIV(DS). I'm not new to the series, I believe I started with IV many years ago, but I would often get distracted by something else even though I enjoyed the games a lot. As a big fan of Akira Toriyama's artstyle as well as JRPGs I've wanted to get more into the series for a while now, and I was finally able to finish IV a little over a year ago, took a bit of a break and then started V towards the end of last year.

I have to say that I enjoyed V a lot more than IV. Obviously V has the party chat now, which is nice(I know it's in IV mobile, but that's not the one I own), but really I just found the journey as a whole to be more enjoyable. I felt more invested with the stories in V and the idea of following the hero throughout his life was really cool. The hero goes through a lot, but even the stories in towns had a more lasting impact on me than what was in IV.

My complaints are small, but they exist. I found the events surrounding the hero's marriage, which is important enough to be referenced in the title, to be rushed and feeling like it came out of nowhere, especially the option to pick anyone but Bianca. Also, I just didn't think the monster taming was interesting, which is a shame because I'm a big fan of Pokemon and SMT so I was looking forward to it. Ultimately, the monster taming feels like it exists simply because the story doesn't always allow for a full party, and monsters being recruited randomly after battle just made me not care to seek any out once I had a couple that could do a decent job.

For the next one, I already own VI(DS), VII(3DS), VIII(PS2), and IX. I've already played a good amount of VIII and IX and think that I want to try one that's new to me(and want the 3DS version of VIII). I'm also kind of tired of the DS graphics, and it sounds like it would be a good idea to look into playing the SNES version of VI so I think I will play VII next. I also want to play a game with jobs after the set characters of IV and V, and it looks like VII is stronger than VI in that area.

Finished DQ1 last week

Working my way through DQ2 right now. Feels pretty amazing when you have the ship and get the remaining keys and suddenly everything is open to you. Basically just running around now gathering quest items and such.

I know there is a very unpleasant dungeon awaiting me near the end of the game. I've seen quite a few people elsewhere complain about it.

Enjoying the mobile versions. I cannot wait to start DQ3 when I finish with DQ2. I am enjoying DQ2 quite a bit and I hear DQ3 is one of the best and most beloved games in the series.

I also purchased 4 and 5 while they were still on sale. I may play 4 next after 3. I may wait more towards spring for that. I have played and finished both of these on the DS already but it has been a few years since I finished it.

My DQVIII 3DS copy came in a day earlier, showed up last night. Booted it up for a whirl, the music works really well but the visual design suffers a bit, but we knew that already. Not gonna have time to play it now, but keen on replaying it soon because it's been ages since I beat DQVIII.

Finished the 3DS version of Dragon Quest VII yesterday. It took me a bit over 10 hours less than it did on PSX (71 hours vs. 85 hours), but I'm not sure how much of that is because I knew the game better this time. Probably also cut a lot of time because I didn't have to look for missing fragments so much. Though I still missed one in the temple palace in the past. Overall I found that blinking "fragment detector" on the bottom screen a bit distracting, would be nice if you could turn that off (or maybe I just missed the option).

I didn't pay as much attention to the class system on PSX as I did here. So this time I made sure to get my main character up to the "Hero" class and the others as far as I could without grinding too much. As far as I remember you didn't have to relearn skills on PSX. That's different on 3DS, though it can be kinda funny when you're relearning about 5 skills each rank on the higher classes. A bit of a shame that the "Pirate" class leads nowhere. Most other classes either lead to the Druid or the Hero class, but "Pirate" seems to be an early stop. Didn't really have much of a use for Ruff towards the end because of this.
Also finished the game 5 levels lower than I did on PSX (37 vs. 42), probably because I actually made use of the classes this time. Maybe they rebalanced the game to make it easier as well, I don't know. The enemies in the final dungeon are still pretty brutal, though. Especially if you're a cheapskate like me and don't want to waste too much MP on Insulatle. At least I didn't grind much this time, basically only when I was almost done with a class and I was just about to start a new scenario. No money problems this time, either. But that's in part because I hit the jackpot in the casino and could afford their weapons. Those last for a long time (or until the end for the ones from the second casino).

My main grief with this new version are the visible enemies. They appear and reappear so fast that you're fighting a lot more often than in the original game. At least battles are also much faster, but it's still very annoying. Especially in dungeons with tight corridors where you can't avoid them at all. It has its upsides, especially when revisiting areas (that have enough space). But overall I think the negatives outweigh the positives. With a lower appearance rate and maybe less aggressively chasing monsters I would have been okay with the change. But then again, it felt weird to have random encounters again in that one dungeon that had them.

Has SquareEnix (or Nintendo) acknowledged the slowdown problems yet? It can be really annoying at times (and even worse when playing in 3D), would be a shame if this release was kept in this flawed state. Though, realistically I'm not expecting a patch at this point.

And just because, here are some of my favorite Maribel comments (that I took screenshots of):
iuEgPcZ.jpg
6sGQgfE.jpg

yHtgHlU.jpg
E9CJZQh.jpg

But overall, it's a good remake. Certainly the version I'd recommend to play, but still not the "definitive" version I'd have liked it to be. But most importantly Europe finally got the game at all!

I beat DQ3 on my phone just now and in the final cutscene I must have touched my phone screen and it closed the game.

Guess I get to fight that final boss again if I want to see the end :(

Yeah I guess it is just buggy because it did it again :(

What a load of bullshit

I'm a big fan of Theatrhythm Final Fantasy, so of course I wanted Theatrhythm Dragon Quest - I just couldn't justify the expense of a Japanese 3DS to play it. But since I hacked my 3DS last month, I looked around and found a brand new, sealed copy for $20 (with free shipping) on eBay! I grabbed Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3D for $20 as well (since it has a fan translation).

So far, I really, really like Theatrhythm Dragon Quest. The song count is a lot lower than TFF: Curtain Call, but I'm still satisfied with what's there. I like that there's a challenge mode to unlock most of the songs, plus there's a daily challenge, and the board game mode is a nice change of pace. It's mostly playable without knowing Japanese, and when there's something I want to know, the Google Translate smartphone app actually works pretty well - it gets caught up on some game-specific terms, but I can almost always figure out what the game is telling me through the translation.

I just got Terry's Wonderland, but so far it's fun, too. The fan translation is actually pretty high quality! I've noticed a couple instances of text going outside the text box, and a few awkwardly phrased lines, but on the whole, they did a great job. They follow the modern translation conventions for item and monster names, etc.

About 17 years since I first tried and failed to play Dragon Warrior 1+2 on the Gameboy Color I made an effort to give the game another shot (especially since I've owned the majority of the series for years now) with the SNES remakes via a translation patch.

I started off in DQ1 pretty much the same way as I did when I was younger; I ran off to the town in the top left-hand corner of the map and began progressing west making frequent return trips to town to heal up and replace my equipment as I gained more gold. I ended up getting the expensive axe in said town and, much like all the years before, I hit a wall where I couldn't put up a reasonable fight further in on the western area of the map (destroyed town and such).

I figured that I must have missed something earlier on, and low and behold there was a bridge to the east which set me on the right path. Found the town with the magic keys, rescued the princess, but following that I was only able to find the harp/staff myself; I ended up jumping over to a guide to find the rest of the items for the rainbow drop. I got beaten by the Dragon Lord a good amount of times but got a lucky break on my last attempt with some tremendous blows and managed to come out on top. It was a neat touch to get to run around a monster-less world on the way back to the castle.

While it was fun to play a "simple" RPG that was pretty quick to complete I'm at a bit of a loss on the best way to tackle the 8 remaining titles without burning out on them. Maybe just put some time between games? I wonder if it would be better to just skip 2 and get right into 3 which was one of the games I was most looking forward to finally playing more than just repeating that fantastic intro on my neighbours' GBC.

Either or it's nice to finally be making a dent in this pile.

DQ 2 is the only DQ game I feel no desire whatsoever to replay, but a lot of people seem to enjoy it so I'd recommend at least giving it a try. Play a couple of hours until you have all three party members together and see how you feel about it. If you find it enjoyable then keep playing. I personally felt burnt out towards the middle of the game because of all the sailing around and random encounters up the wazzoo, so if you feel similarly by then just save yourself the trouble and skip to 3.

The thing about 3 is that it definitely feels a lot more important and grandiose if you've played 1 and 2 before it, but from a story perspective beating the first Dragon Quest is already enough to set up 3 rather nicely so you wouldn't be losing that much by skipping 2.

As for franchise fatigue, it's generally not a good idea to play every single entry in a 9+ game series in a row without taking any breaks, but there's also nothing wrong with playing 2 or 3 entries one after another if you feel like it. I played 4 and 3 in quick succession and didn't feel burnt out at all, so just go with what works best for you.
I definitely took a long break after 2 though lol

Dragon Quest 1+2 for SNES is based on DQ5's engine. DQ3 snes is based on DQ6's engine.

I remember reading about the SNES remakes of Dragon Quest I & II in an issue of GamePro.

Hey DQ GAF! Thought I'd check in. I'm going on my annual trip to New Zealand on Monday to see family and needed something to occupy my time at the airport and on the long flight, so I thought I'd give the first three DQ games on iOS a try. I played the original DW and DW 2 on NES back in the day and years later played the DQ 1+2 SNES remakes with the fan translation.

Aside from that I've played DQIV on the DS and played through most of DQ8 on PS2 but never finished it. I still can't decide if I want to track down the DS versions of V and VI which I haven't played or just stick with the iOS ports.

But anyway, I'm playing the first DQ. Started out as just a way to make sure the game worked without an internet connection and then just kept playing. I just got the Sun Stone and Rain Staff. Now I WAS stuck trying to figure out how to get the third one, but I looked it up. What I'm dying to know is, HOW IN THE WORLD ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO GUESS THAT THE LITTLE BADGE THAT YOU NEED IS IN A MARSH IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE?!?

Seriously though I talked to everyone. The only hint I got was that I was supposed to go back to Tantagel and then... Nothing. No clues or anything. I'm just dying to know if there was something I missed. I can't even remember how I figured it out back then. It's driving me nuts as to where the "clue" was.

It's been a while since I played it, but didn't you get an item, something like the "princess' love", that acts kinda like a compass for this?

You know the guide I read said something about using that would give numbers. When I used it a couple times I thought it was talking about where she was at Tantagel, but must've overlooked that. Thanks.

IIRC, there's an NPC who straight-up tells you that the token is hidden at X/Y map coordinates in relation to the castle. If you've got a piece of paper lying around, you can count off steps (there's a lot of counting) as you try to find it.

The Princess' Love item tells you what the X/Y coordinate distance is between you and your beloved. And since the Princess is inside the castle, you can use her to mark your own distance from the castle, making it much easier to find those specific coordinates.

OHHHHHHHH! I get it now. I talked to the NPC that gave me coordinates, but with the way he words it, it sounds like he says go 70 steps North and 40 steps West FROM Tantagel Castle. No idea he meant I was supposed to BACKTRACK that amount. Yeah, I just loaded up a quick save from before I found the item and he says, "You must make it to the place! What place? Why the place where Tantagel Castle is 70 paces North and 40 paces West" Somehow my brain read that as "From Tantagel Castle, go 70 paces North and 40 paces West" which I figured would put me around Gwalenholm which was confusing the hell out of me.

So, sorry to double post, but I thought I'd share my progress on the Erdrick/Loto trilogy on mobile. I've been having a blast. Currently playing DQ3.

DQ1 feels rather slow and clunky (which is understandable and forgivable being the first game). And I swear that battle music... it's REALLY not meant to be heard for random battles especially when you're going through an area with weak monsters. Like I mentioned above, you really have to keep an eye open for clues on where to go, what to get it and how to find it. Adding visual cues helps a lot, but it makes me wonder how I got through the NES game in the first place. I can only remember accidentally searching a lot. I cheated a bit and looked up maps for Dragonlord's cave to find the Thunder Blade. It's not FFXII's chests, but it's pretty diabolical with its hidden location.

DQII is just as fun as I remember. Catchy battle theme, battle system is fleshed out and more intuitive. I wish there was 9 letters for character names instead of 8. Yeah, I know, for old JRPGs space was a mostly unheard of luxury back then, but I mostly know the Princess of Moonbrooke as Princessa from Fortune Street and in Dragon Quest IX, she appears along with the prince of Cannock named Princeton. I just needed ONE more letter to get it perfect, but I ended up going with Princesa and Princton.

Word of warning though. While the game worked fine for me on my iPad (never crashed), there's a nasty glitch involving using weapons as items. It might work okay the first time or so but after a while there's nasty lag that gets WORSE as time goes on. It'll start at about 15 seconds and I've tested it can last up to 30

It goes

"You hold up the Wizard Staff and flames shoot forth!"
DELAY
Spell animation
DELAY
Monster A gets X damage!
DELAY
Monster B gets X damage!
DELAY
Monster C gets X damage!

Yeah, every time it says DELAY, up to THIRTY SECONDS goes by.

It's weird because the Wizard Staff casts Sizz and casting Sizz as a spell works perfectly fine.

Anyway on to Dragon Quest III! Just got to Portuga. I've never played it, but as a kid I had an issue of Nintendo Power that had a walkthrough of Dragon Warrior III. I poured over it several times. It looked so cool. When I finally got a chance to play Dragon Warrior (I was a very poor gamer as a kid), I used the Alefgard map in the walkthrough to help me though the game. Even though I'm still wondering why now from playing the games recently why the map for III currently looks like a kid's drawing of Earth. Guess I'll find out.

From playing IX, it's nice to go back to the recruitable party members that you can customize. The personality system is interesting, I just wish you could have more control and indication of stat growth. Like, a basic, numberless stat chart or something. But there's a handy wiki to help build up the characters how I like.

So far no iOS problems. Can't seem to figure out how to attack my own party members if they're sleeping though.

The dragon quest heroes 2 demo is out on psn.

Also not sure if I want to get it on ps4 or pc :l
It ran perfectly fine on the PS4 from what I remember, so if you don't care that much about higher resolution etc. and are interested in coop multiplayer, choosing the same platform as your friends might be the way to go.
I wonder how big the PC online community is going to be though. If it's small, it might be a better idea to just go PS4.

Ok I'll jump on that ps4 version then.

Enjoyed the demo for how short it was, but man I FREAKING LOOOOOVE the visual style of these games.

It just looks so clean yet detailed in some weird way

Looking for a big game during downtime between big releases and hyped for tomorrow's reveal of the DQ11 release date made me go back to DQ7.

I still can't decide which version I should play. The mobile one runs smoother, looks better, has a quick save anywhere feature, and easier to use menus (which I'm used to, since I finished DQ 1-6 on mobile), but doesn't have buttons and spinning the camera around is a pain.

The 3DS version has buttons! Which make controlling the character much smoother, but quick saving is a bit of a pain (especially compared to the mobile version), and I really hate how the font looks.

I have both version, got further in the mobile one, but I'm still on the fence.

I would personally go for 3DS. Movement is something you have to engage with for the entire duration of the game, so better controls tend to win out for me over anything else.

I guess you're right. Since I'm further in the mobile version, I'll try to catch up on the 3DS and see if the better controls are actually enough to make this one more fun.

Edit:
Well, played around with both versions again yesterday and I think I'll stick to the mobile one. The QoL changes (especially with quicksaving) are just too good to pass up.

Dragon Quest 8 3DS is so good! Much better than I expected, but that's probably because I only played the PS2 version for an hour or two when it came out and hated it then.

Too bad the Japanese version doesn't include the option to change the camera controls from inverted to normal, but I'll live.

Finally getting around to VII 3ds. I liked the into...to an extent. Didn't really like the part where you go all the way to four separate graveyards, step on two buttons and watch the slowest of cutscenes for the pedestal to move. I don't mind long intros at all, but it got a bit boring getting the armor. I know some of the into was cut in the remake and I'm guessing it was this part? I'll have to check out the original intro at some point.

Finished DQVIII 3DS today, together with the true ending. I enjoyed it so much that I didn't even need a break after marathoning VII - went through the whole game in a week.

Now I've started IX, the only DQ game I haven't finished yet (and only played for around 20 minutes until today). I have to say that it looks pretty bad on the 3DS in the default mode, so decided to switch to the "true resolution" mode. Luckily I have an n3DS XL, so it doesn't look extremely tiny.

After about 2 hours, I have to say that it's quite enjoyable, but all the reports of significant framerate drops with a full party make me worried.

I'm debating whether to pick up DQ7 or not. I love IX, am actively playing VIII, and have V and VI waiting in the wings. Some of the comments on gameplay style and the class system make me think I'd really like it, but I'm also somewhat put off by the reported length. I'm a busy guy and don't get a lot of time to complete games though I'm trying to be a little more disciplined in that regard. Also, I understand there is a bit of downloadable content, so I'm wondering if I should get it now and play far enough to get some of that stuff before it inevitably goes away?

Well, I decided to go for it. Glad I did! I've played about 3.5 hours so far and am absolutely loving this game. The music is wonderful, the characters are charming, etc. I think I'll enjoy the shorter vignettes. I suspect it will make it easier to set aside after completing an island for a break and then pick back up. It reminds me a bit of DQ IX in that regard.

Speaking of IX, spent most of the weekend playing it and I think I'm not that far from the end - I just got all the fruit.
Since I want to beat the main story without much effeort, I'm probably going to spend some time today with liquid slimes until I get to level 45 or higher (currently 32).

Hasemo

Still going through DQIX. I didn't plan to change my vocations, but I wanted to grab the skills for my current ones once they reached level 40.

How naive of me. After literally 2 hours spent on trying to get 5 critical pratfalls for the Minstrel quest I gave up and grinded to lv 48 on Liquid Slimes instead.
That quest is so hard, that I think the Critical Pratfall has been lowered from 5 to 2 in the English version.

Anyway, looking at the guide, it seems that I have one short dungeon to go before the last dungeon. I though that I'll be able to easily finish the game today, but reading some of the horror stories about the final boss fight, made me a bit less confident. My levels are quite high, but all my equipment is (the best) stuff I bought from stores. I hope it's going to be okay.
