So I've just wiki-ed what moé is thanks to this thread, and I have to say that moé is the main reason I quit watching most anime series many years ago and just stick with anime films (thank you Studio Ghibli, Satoshi Kon, etc. for not going moé).

I hate moé. Old school animes have much more appealing style to me (more gritty, or just not 'this'), not this commercialized (for Japan) cutesy crap (not against cute, just moé cute).

There have been lots of anime in the past few years that aren't just about cute girls doing cute things. Hell this season alone has so many different anime styles, it's amazing.

Look like I am not the only one here who feel the same way. Unfortunately, the majority of the moe are the problem for this issue. It`s like Japan animated industry have to make this stuff now to keep the moe happy (basically destroy what Animated use to be in the past).

Uh, Ghibli does plenty of moe stuff.

The only one I have watched recently was Kaiji which I did enjoy (don't think I even remember seeing any girls in that one, seems only men gamble in Japan or something :p).

a lot of these anime shows actually do have to include a certain amount of fanservice ('pantyshot quota') so that the Otakus keep buying the DVDs

Hm, what is moe exactly then?
When I think of moe I think of stuff like this:

moe_girl.png

Which I often see posted by anime fans here, and with that I think of those exaggerated cute gestures and characteristics that goes along with it.
I don't think I have watched any Ghibli movie that is like that, so perhaps I am getting what moe is wrong.

kaiji's pretty moe when you think about it...

It does have lots of exaggerated gestures, but I guess I am fine with that as long as the show is not primarily focused on moe anime girls to appease fans, and that it is not the overall art direction the particular series uses.

I wish they is more anime that have this kind of look at the background. Looking at some Chinese animated work and this one is always something I wish they release here in North America. Shame they only have a mini teaser in Youtube which is still interesting to watch.

This season alone has like 5 shows that aren't like this. I hope you are watching them all.

Ponyo is more moe than Rika.

And even among moe stuff, there should be a certain threshold. Even in something like Cowboy Bebop, there is an exaggerated genki girl, but people are able to forgive that for the rest of the awesome. People should not dismiss something that has moe depending on the context and/or volume. Something like Madoka for example could be seen as moe in design and possibly concept, but as far as content goes, it's about as far from moe as you can get in terms of how the word is commonly perceived.

In other words, it's best to keep an open mind.

I will try but I still have lots of old stuff I need to watch first which I neglected for years (NieA_7 and Paranoia Agent).

I am fine with Ponyo because she was cute but not in any sexual way and the style is very much different compared to the above image (plus that film was made for very young children specifically). Even sexualized I am fine with (I enjoyed the new Eva movies and just watched that series last year believe it or not), just the particular style that I posted above which I just cannot get into no matter what. The content / context will need to be drastically different thematically for me to enjoy the above cute-style. The problem is that the visual style of an anime should define what content is going to be expected coming from that particular anime, unless the intent is for a parody or something. I would not expect an anime to be in the above artistic style to suit me in terms of content, for example, because the style itself should not be used if it is for anything more serious (which is what I usually enjoy watching).

Because you don't look hard enough. Stop blaming this mostly imaginary moe plague for your own laziness. :p

More helpfully, you can always ask for recommendations in the seasonal anime thread, where you'll get more than enough posts that prove "moe" is hardly some all-encompassing plague.

Also about the whole "moe" plague thing - there is good moe and there is bad moe. I mean there's nothing wrong with a character having moe characteristics as long as it isn't the main point of the character.

Ehh, a lot of recent stuff that has sold extremely well, doesn't even have any panty shots or follow anything close to a "pantyshot quota". Not that they are great shows, mind you.

Rika is pretty moe until she gets all dark and
starts stabbing herself in the neck.

I did but it`s tons out of tons of anime that is targeting at Moe. You gotta literally spend quite a long time before you can look for one that is decent and something you can watch it. Maybe this years it might be a bit better but that`s not saying much :p

I might check the GAF anime topic for any serious anime type show.

No, you really don't! I could go on a longwinded rant but I'll just take the easy way out and say visit the anime thread in community. We are, surprisingly, not a horde of pervert moe masturbation monsters. You ask for something and we will likely give you a title or several that fit(s) your specifications within minutes.

We (well some of us) also discuss things beyond "aww man that shit was so kawaii/10" and talk about staff, animation, the history of anime, styles among directors, styles among animators, etc. We're a good place! ...most of the time.

Ehh anime is like one of the easiest mediums to find good stuff for I mean - Look at seasonal charts > filter out all the shit with bad art styles > check out stuff that looks semi-decent / interesting > check staff > check what other people are looking forward to (to make sure you aren't missing anything) > rinse repeat. At least unlike say books, films and video games you can theoretically keep up with everything!

I mean this current season alone has - lupin the third : the woman called fujiko mine, tsuritama, kids on the slope and then afterwards - space brothers, mysterious girlfriend x, saint seiya omega, fate/zero s2, eureka seven ao etc. Not sure how any anime fan can complain about the state of anime right now, until the next shitty season comes, then it will be justified!

I am anti-Moe. We need to kill those Moe people as they`re destroying what we use to love. I don`t need the female character to show her tits or underwear scene every time just to get our attention. I don`t need to tell ourself that what we`re watching isn`t porn but what it`s showing is getting very closer to it. I don`t need those crazy and sometime disturbing fans who destroy the show and the animated scene

Those types of things aren't representative of moe at all, brah. That's just good old fanservice.

And there can only be one Blade here in this part of town.

It's not just moeshit that's made anime bad -nothing but tits and rehashed character archetypes now. High School everything.

Not even trying anymore.
