This is one of the main reasons I think they haven't bothered to make an HD remake of FF7. Square-Enix would have to decide between toning several things down or releasing the game with an M rating. The former option would upset a lot of fans, and the latter doesn't seem to be how Square operates. It's easier for them to just rerelease the original digitally several times.

As someone who hasn't played through FFVII, I don 't get what everyone's calling creepy. But then again, I don't know who Marlene is either - I'm guessing that's the missing piece of the puzzle for me.

edit: Oh she's a child. Ok, gotcha.

kefka, celes, and tera = yoshinori kitase

locke and cyan = Tetsuya Takahashi

sabin and edgar = Soraya Saga

shadow and setzer = nomura

i forget who handled the others.

i doubt it was marlene's underwear. tifa probably just wore weird panties. theres no way some busty kung fu chick is wearing underwear for babies

"You'll get used to it" is referring to him relaxing in the tub with the other guys, not to being prodded.

Not even Tifa is worth that sacrifice.

Kitase: When an event begins in FFVII, the other 2 party members separate themselves from Cloud’s avatar. Once the event finishes, the party recombines and Cloud is alone once more. It’s just the way the game’s set up, but Toriyama parodied that. The 3 members of AVALANCHE were like “Let’s do that too!” and do their best to combine together, but they just ended up running into each other and muttering “I guess we still don’t have enough practice.” *laughing*

I think this concept was conceived before all the logic barriers were in place.

It is possible to consider that the panties belonged to Tifa, and the joke was simply that she liked wearing "cute things".

But the deliberate phrase about how "they looked like a child's panties" also makes it plausible that they do belong to Marlene after all, and perhaps the implication was enough to pass as "the joke".

In any event, it's not crazy to suspect the intention of this bit, which is no doubt why Square denied using it in the first place.

And Cloud says:
The pattern on this looks like it's for kids

It's not the same thing, you're really reaching here. Panties with childish design are a japanese anime/manga cliché thing, nothing really surprising. And as others pointed out, Cloud could use them, Marlene was a 5 years old, I mean come on.

In my last posts I hated on Toriyama, but there is really nothing to hate on here, and the Avalanche thing would have been awesome.

About Third Birthday...

In the Japanese version, the weird fetish outfits you wear actually changed all her voice clips. This was even more uncomfortable then the weird fetish outfits were to begin with, because like the maid outfit would make Aya moan like a porn star and call the player "master."

I mean, the game is creepy-as-hell to begin with but that managed to make it even creepier.

Again, it is possible that they were intended to be Tifa's panties, and the gag is that she likes childish patterns.

But the sheer possibility that they could be Marlene's, even if Toriyama himself publicly denied it, was probably enough for Square to shelve the idea.

And as much as you want to laugh about the idea, having Cloud still wear Tifa's panties is still disturbing in of itself.

And despite that, the idea that Sector 7 is full of assholes who can casually sneak in and steal Tifa's underwear gives off the kind of tone that seems consistent with Toriyama's other works that rub me the wrong way.

Any comments about "relaxing" are toward him relaxing in the hot tub to see if he would enjoy it.

You can see how people can come to that conclusion

Honestly, I think the whole Honey Bee Inn "quest" is a big reason why FFVII has never been remade. I have no idea how the hell they could handle that in a remake, and you know there'd be a pissed off contingent of fans if they removed it entirely.

This story just makes the whole thing so much more bizarre.

And I thought my opinion of this game couldn't get any lower.

Is Toriyama working on Versus? Is it even still called Versus XIII? I stopped following the game after like 6 years. I'd like to install an emergency eyewash station in my house just in case.

Okay, fair enough.

But I chalk it up to a mistranslation, since it conflicts with the follow-up "it's too stuffy in here".

Even after debating whose panties belong to whom, I can say with a thousand percent confidence that Cloud is not being physically molested, and at no point in the game's development was this ever being considered.
