In case anyone is wondering what is happening with GTX 1070 prices - http://www.tomshardware.com/news/gpu-prices-increase-ethereum-cryptocurrency,34865.html

I wouldn't expect them to go down immediately.

Also, I assume people are aware that is why RX470/480/580 etc. are in short supply and/or overpriced (crypto mining)

Good lord, I have three 1070s (and two of them I got in May). Tempted to try to sell them to see if I can get three used 1080s.
I sold my rx480 and bought a 1070 right before the 1070's went up. Glad I got it then.

Then one sells the 1070, gets a 1080, and a week after the prices of the 1080 skyrocket, then you get a 1080ti through the same deal; one starts to wonder whether to try your luck at a casino in Las Vegas while you are at it.

Supposedly the GDDR5X on the 1080/1080ti make them less suitable for mining currently.

I see that same MB as an open box at my local MC... Might snatch it with a Ryzen. If it is less than $50, will I get $50 off the total cost of the MB + CPU, or does it just drop the MB to $0.01 and you "lose" the remainder of the $50 discount? My open box is around $35.

Unrelated question, but does anyone know of a good website for custom cables/thumbscrews/other accessories? Considering getting way too involved in the aesthetics of my case and just want to look at a trustworthy website's inventory to price things out.

Just ordered two Noctua NF-F12 2000 to replace my Corsair SP120's that came with the H100i V2 as well as a Phanteks PHF140SP BK White LED fan for my case. I have a blue and white LED theme going on that I am hoping to complete once my fans and cable mod cables arrive!

I usually start with 1/2 of what I payed for it and knock off a little extra depending on the age and condition. And if you're listing it somewhere include an OBO so they know you're open to negotiation.

I don't remember clearly how much I spent on it, I think in the $1250 ballpark? And I built it near the beginning of 2015.

Everything is in near perfect condition, the only thing that's not is my case which has a few scratches on the window. So I'd be selling it for like.. $650?

About to purchase my build and I need some last minute help from you guys. I'm still undecided on the CPU. I'm torn between the 7800x and the ryzen 1700. Either CPU will be paired with a 1080.

My usage is going to be mostly gaming. However, I generally have lots of tabs, streams open, spotify, discord, etc all running in the background so I don't really want to go with the 7700k. I also stream myself sometimes as well.

Most of the games I play are FPS's. I prefer having at least 120 frames when I'm playing. So basically: Will the ryzen be able to support consistent framerates above 120 (preferably 144) in FPS's? If so, I'll buy that. If not, I might have to go with the 7800x.

Now my 560ti is dead I've been thinking of getting a 1050ti as a cheap replacement. Would this work with my system / anyone see any possible problems?

CPU: i5-3330
RAM: 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600 Mhz
PSU: 360w
Motherboard: GA-Z77-D3H
OS: Windows 7

You could get used gtx970/980 or something for about same price maybe and it would be much better than new 1050ti

I'm seeing people on reddit sell 1070s for $420, and even found a few people straight up trading them for 1080s

What on earth is this mining craze

It's money. You mine money. Money that can be used to buy things. Things that require money.

That sounds good to me personally it's not an exact science if someone else wants to chime in please do.

Basically you want to avoid over pricing it as no one will be interested and also underpricing because you end up losing out and with no room to negotiate.

Keep in mind when people look for used PC's they are looking for a deal and anything even close to msrp is an immediate turn off especially when they could use new components and build something similar with none of the hassles of it being older and used.

cpu was running pretty slowly the past couple months so I finally decided to clean it out and reapply thermal paste, insane the amount of difference it made. friendly reminder to do it every once in a while!

Yes the Ryzen can handle frames that high. Why wouldn't it be able to? It's a new CPU. Additionally FPS is mostly GPU dependent.

Yeah, I was thinking of finally replacing my now dead 7950 with a 1070 soon, but I guess I may as well just wait until Autumn after all.

But proper frame pacing is also very much a CPU issue.

After all the updates and latest drivers a Ryzen 1700 makes for an excellent base for a high-end system. Now you can also get some great deals on it and an AM4 board.

The problem with Skylake-X CPUs is they run very hot and are comparatively very power hungry at the top end. A 7800X and new motherboard will also be significantly more expensive for you for incremental gains in performance. There also seems to be several bugs and problems with the platform right now so as well as eating the increased total platform prices you're looking at a good few months for issues to be ironed out I'd expect.

But proper frame pacing is also very much a CPU issue.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Ryzen generally superior in this regard too? I check some tests for this but it was a couple months back.

Guys is it worth to buy a gsync monitor now? I was looking at the AOC 27" and at the same price I could get a 32" HDR Samsung with freesync, I just don't know if it's better to drop my gtx1070 and get a rx580 or wait for a gsync HDR (that will probably cost a shit ton of money). Also I'm not so sure that Vega can top a 1070/1080 so having freesync would be nice, but having higher FPS would be better :)

No correct answers here. If you aren't in a hurry waiting is the better alternative imo.
Nobody is sure how vega is going to perform and how much it is going to cost. The latest MSI post regarding the power consumption also didn't make people too happy about it. 1070 and 580 prices are also through the roof atm and it's a terrible time to switch one for the other.
Wait for vega gaming benchmarks, and hdr display prices with freesync/gsync. Decide than.

I'm currently trying to decide on a build, don't know where to start.

Your Current Specs: Currently have a notebook
Budget: Under $800 (adjustable) + I'm from New Zealand
Main Use: 5: Gaming, Emulation (PS2/Wii/Wii U), Video Editing, Streaming games in HD, and some general usage such as watching HD videos.
Monitor Resolution: Will connect to a 1080p TV for now
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: Hoping for at-least 1080p/60 on most modern games
Looking to reuse any parts?: Just a 2.5' 1TB HDD
When will you build?: Don't have a deadline.
Will you be overclocking?: Maybe in the future.

Good time to sell my founders edition 1070 and upgrade to a 1080 or a ti?

Not sure if founders edition models are wanted for mining...

PC gurus of GAF! Can I get your opinion on this second-hand set-up that's being sold locally by somebody for £1,000 (or best offer)?
Does it represent value for money? Whay would be a good price?
How capable would it be for sim racing and FPSes at 1080p/60?
Any obvious weak or odd areas? Limitations for upgrading? Suitable cooling?
Anything other advice you can add?
I think it was a pre-built.
Many thanks.

Hi again PCGaf,

Just after some advice on three storage options for where my OS would be installed.

Which would be the fastest and best:

1) Samsung 960 EVO Polaris 250GB M.2 2280 PCI-e 3.0 x4 NVMe Solid State Drive

2) Samsung SM961 Polaris 256GB M.2-2280 PCI-e 3.0 x 4 NVMe Solid State Drive

3)Samsung 250GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive

Thanks!

Woa guys. I don't want to cite all my Posts, but maybe you remeber my Name. I had many problems and my mobo wouldnt Start. Apparently, i got some cool liquid on my Pins and One of them was slightly curvy and after doscoverong and repairing, my System finally started. The Boot USB Stick froze, but after only putting in One RAM, i finally got to install Windows and my fucking System runs! I updated my Asus Ab350 BIOS and was able to put in both RAM. They are currently running on 2133 and I dont yet Dare to select "run on 2800"in the BIOS, but goddammit, im so happy right now!

Thanks to all who've helped me and probably will continue to Do because of the RAM (i dont even understand What These voltages are About) and I also want to try overclocking CPU at one point, but right now:THANKS!

Well, after running it through pcpartpicker you'd certainly be shaving a few hundred off of what it would cost to build something with those parts today - something comparable with a kabylake CPU and GTX 1070 instead would fetch around £1100, for comparison. It'll stomp 1080p60 with ease, will even generally achieve 60 FPS at 1440p (though some games will force it to buckle a little), and is capable of 4k30.

One question I'd ask is how the thermals are. Small form factors tend to come with the caveat of being warmer, and depending on what model of 980 Ti you have (I went with a presumption of a reference style blower), that could be better or worse.

Glad to hear you got that figured out, also glad it seems the liquid merely interfered rather than outright damaged anything.

Regarding voltage and RAM speeds - voltage is as you'd expect, just how much power you feed the sticks. The thing is, running DDR4 ram at anything above 2133 Mhz basically involves overclocking, and so to get certain levels of performance, they may require more power.

Anyone sell their 480 on eBay? Figured I would try and cash in then upgrade to a 1070 or 1080 when prices come back down since I'm not using my gaming pic for the moment but wary since I've never sold anything of high value aside from video games. Just scared to get scammed

960 EVO is slightly better than sm961. Sm961 is much better than 850 EVO.
At those speeds, however the gains will be hard to notice.

I think I'm happy with the performance on offer - what would be a good price do you think?

I think someone earlier ITT said a good baseline was (price of components new)/2, maybe a little more, so if you do some google-fu on the parts it should give you an idea. If the 980Ti is about a year old I think it retailed for about £400-450-ish new.

I think I'm happy with the performance on offer - what would be a good price do you think?

I'm admittedly terrible at haggling since I tend to want the other side to at least get a decent amount out of things. So take what I say with a grain of salt, but... I'd kinda say £800-£900 might be a good area to aim for? Like, even if they try to push you back to £950 you'd still make an extra saving on top of what you already would be.

What's a good bang for the buck GPU for 1080p gaming? I want to update some stuff on my build but I don't foresee myself going above 1080p in the immediate future.

As a 1060 owner- yeah, it's really good if you're okay with medium-ultra settings (depending on the game), although paired with an older CPU, ultra does become an issue at times. I'm personally alright with it since I often can't tell the difference between high and ultra without really looking for it.
