The phat was already a great piece of kit, so what was the difference?

1-Seg TV Tuner was a huge hit with sellouts when the Slim was released. I'd be curious to see how it's doing since then.

Another thing to keep in mind is that, outside of Japan, Sony has been saying that they're repositioning the PSP from a "PlayStation Personal" to a "PlayStation Social" with add-ons like the GPS receiver and keyboard. That means that in Japan, it's already being considered as a "PlayStation Social." Maybe someone could comment on the marketing on the ground in Japan, but I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the PSP's being pushed (and sold) a lot more for its non-gaming functions than any gaming functions.

Weekly software/hardware sales disparities would certainly support that.

Yeah, PSP's really turned it around stunningly (at least hardware wise). A year ago it had been basically written off for SS/N64 territory.

Sort of funny though, that it's surged when developers basically abandoned it, meanwhile it's first few years when the platform was getting AAA games from nearly every major developer it was floundering. Software sales still are really problem, but it doesn't seem like it's going to get much in terms of new support to really turn that around either. :/
Ye, i'm interested in seeing how the software situation for PSP will turn out. The upcomming software list isnt completely dry (i saw you posted a list some days ago, thanks for that list by the way :)), but i dont recall seeing any huge titles in there though, so i dont think we'll see any big numbers on those upcomming titles, but we will see how good or bad they sell :)

If you think that's sad then just think of this; there were no main franchise Pokemon games released in Japan last fiscal year.

I sincerely hope that Tales of Symphonia: KoR does better than ~95k in it's first week. I can't exactly remember the originals sales, but I know it ended up around 300k. That should be it's initial target, and first weeks sales should be about half of it's total sales.

ToS did 185k first week on lifetime of 325k.
ToS PS2 did 270k first week on lifetime of 395k.

I can't remember when the PS2 version was announced so it's hard to tell whether or not GCN sales were stunted by the PS2 announcement or if the two userbases can be considered relatively separate in terms of this game.

Not much interest in 14-year-old RPG series revival, is there? I forgot to check, busy playing FFXII RW (I like what I'm seeing ).

Trusting Wikipedia...
Although the game was originally intended to be a GameCube exclusive, a port for the PlayStation 2, released only in Japan , was announced in April 2004.
So the 2003 GCN version shouldn't have been much affected, at least in Japan. In the US it didn't come out until July 2004.

What does "sales" include?

Source is Enterbrain, which is what we call "Famitsu", so it's almost certainly full Famitsu sales numbers for the year rounded to the nearest million (or rounded down to the million place).

Wait, Sega has a bigger share of the pie now than SCE? Just what the fuck is going on here? And where does this leave the PS3 in Japanese developers eyes? I purchased my PS3 specifically for hardcore Japanese games and not particularly for shooters. If the current trend continues, when am I going to able to get my fix?

it's in million Yen. 102 billion Yen sales for Nintendo would equal to somewhere around 19 million games sold.
Ah ok, thanks for the info :)

Other than Ryu GA Gotoku Kenzan & Valkyrie of the Battlefield, what Sega games have sold decently in Japan lately?

The chart is pretty much in order of who has released/sold the most DS games for the year. And SCE doesn't release games on either of Japan's most popular gaming platforms.

Here you go.

Notes and Next Week's Expectations
Wii dropped further than expected, but I should have compared to the previous year (52k):

PL-MC-estimates-77.jpg

Estimated for last week - Actual = Difference
Wii: 62.1k - 41.6k = +20.5k
PS3: 8.5k - 7.7k = +0.8k
360: 1.4k - 1.4k = +0.0k

Next Week:
Wii: 48.0k
PS3: 8.2k
360: 1.5k

SEGA in 2007 sold the second million seller in their (long) history :

Other big titles were Ryu ga Gotoku (The Best) (PS2) and Puyo Puyo! (DS), around 200k each one

SCE best titles were Minna no Golf 5 (PS3) and Minna no Golf Portable 2 (PSP)

I wonder if any game, other than a "Wii"___ line game, can pass 2 million. Smash could'nt even do it/
