I recently got into podcasts, and it was like opening my eyes (or rather ears) to this awesome medium. I’ve noticed a lot of threads asking for podcast recommendations, and even some OTs for specific networks and shows like Idle Thumbs, Hardcore History, and Earwolf.

But I thought a general Podcast OT would be welcome and helpful. The goal here is, kind of like the Comic OTs, catch-all discussion and recommendations on podcasts of all kinds, as well as the behind-the-scenes of starting and setting up podcasts . A friendly place for newcomers to get into the medium and others to discuss their favorites. what they’re currently listening to, what new upcoming podcasts they’re anticipating, and hidden gems they’ve discovered.

I’m relatively new to podcasts myself and less knowledgeable on certain subjects like sports, so any suggestions for networks, resources, and shows to add to the collection below would be welcome

That sounds really interesting and unique, I'll give it a listen later tonight.

Heh, I just realized I didn't even try to provide a brief description. It's sort of a mystery-solving podcast with a very whimsical style, mostly because the mysteries are very personal, inconsequential in the grand scheme of things and even silly at first glance. But they're really well presented and fun to listen to. It's really a "you have to try it for it to click" thing.

Yeah lol, the name made me go "the hell is this about" so I went to their site and read the about page. It sounds like a lot of fun.

I want to recommend Mystery Show because despite it just having started, I've had tons of fun listening to it so far.

If anyone wants to give it a shot, I recommend episode 3 "Belt Buckle". But all of them range from decent to great.

I feel like it's a great time to get into podcasts. Tons of awesome stuff out there. I recently bought Pocketcasts and my subscription count skyrocketed.

I definitely recommend this as well. The first 3 eps are great, but I've been kind of meh on the last two, but that could just be me. I still really enjoy it though.

I added a link and the description to my original post :p

Another really good one I got into a couple of weeks ago is Song Exploder.

cover170x170.jpeg

Basically, every episode consists on a composer discussing one of their tracks and breaking it down, explaining the process of creating it and their intentions/inspirations. For example as an Avatar fan, I really enjoyed listening to Jeremy Zuckerman break down his last composition for the final scene of The Legend of Korra. Episodes are really short, like 15 minutes, and I find how in-depth composers get when describing their creations.

What section would you think is best for it? Serials?

The other day I was trying to categorize my podcasts in the "rank your podcasts" thread and failed miserably =/ yeah, maybe serials is the most suitable out of the categories in the OP, I guess.

I definitely recommend this as well. The first 3 eps are great, but I've been kind of meh on the last two, but that could just be me. I still really enjoy it though.

I sort of agree, Belt Buckle was too good. The Jake Gyllenhaal episode did make me laugh though. That last exchange was gold. ILUV911 was probably the weakest so far.

Anyone have a site or search method to best find podcasts with episodes pertaining to particular things?

After playing a game or watching a movie I'd often like to listen to opinions on it, but google searching or digging through archives is pretty messy

Captain Pants

Killed by a goddamned Dredgeling
Today is one of those days where I'm glad that there are nearly 400 episodes of Jordan Jesse Go!. I've been up since 5:30 and have been going through old JJGo! episodes all day.

Rooster Teeth has some great stuff. The Patch is pretty informative and entertaining, and the Rooster Teeth Podcast is really great. The latter might hinge a bit on knowing the cast since it's very unfocused topically, but it has some huge laughs.

I also suggest The Giant Beastcast, Danswers, 8-4 Podcast, Kinda Funny stuff, and even IGN Pubcast. Don't discound the IGN stuff just because of your opinions on the site, there is some stellar stuff there, and the pubcast is a ton of drunken Australian shenanigans.

Oh, another one I listen to and have seen mentioned on GAF thousands of time is Mysterious Universe.

Basically it's two Australian guys discussing the weird and the paranormal, they do interviews, news roundups, the usual. As a skeptic, I find it quite tolerable in the sense that they're not excessively open minded or blindly believe everyone they interview or everything they read about, they just sort of play along and will often laugh at themselves or the conclusions they reach. It's a fun listen.

Great idea for a thread and best place to ask, anyone know some good Podcasts for someone who enjoys Serial, Sword and Scale, and Criminal. Looking for some good true crime without the cheese like Last Podcast on the Left.

I highly recommend The Adventure Zone.

It's a DnD podcast with the three brothers from My Brother, My Brother, and Me and their dad comes along. The DM is quick witted and wonderful. They never take the game too seriously, which leads to plenty hilarious moments. Once they settle into a groove (it takes a few episodes since the DM had never DMed before and the others hadn't played much DnD) the show really takes off. I enjoy it a heck of a lot more than My Brother, My Brother, and Me at this moment.

Sometimes I feel like the only person in the world who listens to Sowerby&Luff.

Seriously, give it a try. I'd even be happy with someone going "I listened to this and it was shit", because at least I finally saw anyone talking about it outside the Facebook group for the show.

It's an hour-ish show where they talk about weird news stories. Here's a random episode description so you'd get the picture:

How tall is your bread? Plus, bathing in beer, slutty ladybirds, Octopus Awareness Day, a dolphin in Starbucks and a man whose been banned for falling over. Also, Brian does some aggressive mopping and Georgina wants to weigh her head.

Here's a link

If you're looking for a free player on Android, I just recently switched to Podcast Addict, and it's been the best player I've used, by far.

Have you had any trouble with it stalling in the middle of streams? It happened to me during the first two casts I listened to on it, but hasn't happened since (I've used it maybe three other times?)

The Beastcast is rapidly becoming my favorite gaming podcast. As if Vinny wasn't awesome enough already they go ahead and add someone as brilliant as Austin to the mix. I think Alex plays off of them really well too.

Agreed. They're just getting started but it's already so good (obviously because they already have a lot of experience, but still)

This one is great too. They're definitely goofing around and having fun researching these (sometimes unbelievable and fake) paranormal things. Lots of hoaxes and myths, but I love that they don't just laugh these things away.

Some additional stuff that I listen to:

Comedy
Spontaneanation with Paul F. Tompkins: I will listen to anything PFT does, it's allways great, and this is no exception

The Hooray Show with Horatio Sans: A great mix of interviews and weird interludes.

The Andy Daly Podcast Pilot Project: This was a one of series of 8 episodes that are absolutely hysterical. Andy Daly is the master of insane characters.

Really, it's hard to go wrong with anything on the Earwolf network for comedy.

Entertainment
Get Up on This: Jensen Karp, Matthew Robinson and a guest talking about what you should know about and what you may have missed in pop culture. Very funny, and I've found out about a lot of great stuff form this show. Also features the monthly podcast within a podcast Get Up Off This, where Matthew Robinson takes on hosting duties to tell you why everything you like is terrible.

Great idea for a thread and best place to ask, anyone know some good Podcasts for someone who enjoys Serial, Sword and Scale, and Criminal. Looking for some good true crime without the cheese like Last Podcast on the Left.
Yes, I'd like some more recommendations in this area as well

Just finished JRE w/ Dominic Monaghan. Interesting stuff. Rogan also talked about how he's trying to get The Rock on when he has time.

Also started watching Fraiser eagerly awaiting the next Talk Salad & Scrambled Eggs.

If you're looking for a movie podcast check out Double Toasted (People who did Spill).
Dudes are funny, located in Austin. They'll do call shows (they'll call you), and are also open to invite people to be on their podcast. Also do a lot of meetups/bar crawls if you're in the area.

They're on soundcloud and upload their reviews to youtube. You can use something like cloud flipper to import to your podcast player

Plenty of the podcasts I listen to have already been mentioned. I would suggest one I got into and love a couple of months ago.

We Have Concerns with Jeff Cannata and Anthony Carboni

There are 3 episodes a week for about 15-25 minutes each. They generally stick with recent science related news and riff on how things can go wrong.

I don't know if Invisibilia should even qualify as a science podcast. They're 100% going for the feels on that show, usually by interviewing someone who suffers from some sort of neurological or psychological condition. The little bit of science they do talk about is covered so quickly and simplisticly that it's often misleading,

I just started listening to this last month when someone on GAF recommended it(maybe you?). It's so good. Love the serial killer heavy hitters episodes.
I know I have recommended this before here on gaf, but I also got the recommendation myself her on gaf heh. Did you start from the beginning or have you cherry picked based on your curiosity? If you go all the way back from the start you'll get an awesome period where the whole gang (Zebrowski mostly) is so in love with the CIA conspiracy of MK-Ultra it sips through every other episode for a couple of months at least :D

Also I have to say while the more terrifying the crimes - the more entertaining it gets, there is one series of episode that genuinely freaked me out: the satanic government two-parter. Even though it's mostly foil hat stuff, the things they talk about are scary as fuck!

Comsidering the show is psychology-focused and how it influences and affects people, I thought it would be a nice for people interested in social sciences. More science related than the stuff I put in the Educational section

I'm a psych major, so I might somewhat biased :p

Great OT.

Is there any podcast app, that also syncs up with a website? What I mean is, start listening through the phone app and continue on a website.

I'll just plug these two excellent shows then:

Cognitive Dissonance - "It's skeptical, it's political and there is No welcome mat!"
News from the atheist and skeptical perspective. They bring critical thinking, skepticism, and irreverence to any topic that makes the news, makes it big, or makes them mad. Easily offended? You might want to skip this one.

The Thinking Atheist - "Assume nothing, question everything, open your eyes!"
"Seth Andrews, a former Christian broadcaster and believer for 30 years, ultimately escaped the bonds of superstitious thinking to embrace the more satisfying explanations that science provides. A professional video producer and host of one of the most popular atheist communities on the internet, Seth Andrews brings a polished format, a relaxed environment and a rage-free challenge to the religious beliefs that defined his youth.

I know for a fact Pocket Casts has an online player which subscription syncing, but I'm not sure if it syncs progress. Also, the online player has to be bought as an add-on to the app, which is why I don't use it :p

Edit: Just took a look at the website and it seems it does track progress! So you might wanna look into it.

I started off just checking out the heavy hitters episodes since that's what interests me the most but I've been listening to others too. Man, I have a dark sense of humor and almost nothing offends me, so a podcast with those sensibilities is right up my alley.

Great OT! I've recently gotten into Podcasts myself, since I need something to listen to at work (and can't really stream music). I'll have to look into some of these suggestions, since I only have 3-4 podcasts right now and need more :p (that weird news story one seems neat). I'm guessing 10 podcasts per week (depending on how often they update) will fill my work time where I listen, after I catch up on old episodes.

Since I really need a list online of "my podcast status", I'll put it here:

Listening to:
Retronauts (I love old gaming history and stuff)
VGMpire (I also love game music, though I wish they'd talk a little less)
Stuff You Should Know (very interesting, random stuff)

Probably Going to Drop:
The USGamer Podcast (I don't find it all that interesting, and a lot of overlap with Retronauts in terms of hosts)

Dropped:
Axe of the Blood God (I... don't really like Kat Bailey as a host. Nothing against her, just don't like it.)

Going to Try:
Legacy Music Hour
Sowerby & Luff
Turbo Game Podcast
Planet Money (NPR podcast about money/economics, seems neat)
Wait Wait Don't Tell Me (NPR Podcast which is a comedy trivia show? Dunno, worth a try)
Hardcore History
Top Score

I'd like to get a current events podcast in my rotation, but I'm not sure which one to try. I also want to work through the others first and see which ones I want to keep on my phone. :p

Overcast does this. (iOS only tho)

Damn, I'm on Android.

Perfect. It does indeed sync up the progress too. Not bad of a pricing, I guess. $4 for the app and then $9 for the web stuff. How is the app?

Thanks guys for your help.
